I've got a small network at my office that's comprised of 4 computers hooked up to a router.

Most of the information that I access is on a co-worker's computer and I can not get my computer to communicate to his. I can access the shared drives of the other two computers, but not his. It was working fine when I left Friday and then wasn't working when I came in Monday. I've tried all I can think of.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

step 1: can you ping his machines ip?

step 2: start -> run -> \\hisip\

no. I can't ping his ISP.

it's telling me the "network path is not found"

A few things to check out (This is all assuming you have Windows 2000/XP installed).

1 - Reboot his computer if this hasn't happened yet. (I know this sounds retarded but humor me)

2 - Go to his computer and do "ipconfig /all" at the command prompt (start - run - type"cmd" then hit enter) and see what IP he has setup on his NIC.
I the IP is 169.154.X.X, then the nic works fine and he wasn't able to get a DHCP address from the server(if you guys are using a DHCP of course).
If he has the IP above, type in ipconfig /renew and see if he gets an IP address.

Can he get to the internet/network resources?

If he can, then he may have turned on the WinXP built in firewall or 3rd party firewall software.
Turning this off(or opening the proper port) would restore file sharing ability.

If he can't get to the internet at all, then you may have a NIC driver issue, try reinstalling the software for the Network Card and then restart the computer. Try swapping out his network cable is there are no lights on his network connection or his port on the router.

Lastly, failing all the above, it is possible that the NIC is dead.

It was a firewall issue after all. someone played around with some settings over the weekend I suppose.
