People who own GIANT vehicles...

die irl pls thx.
OK, why do so many people insist on driving huge trucks or SUVs? I'm so tired of trying to squeeze into my car because some asshole's massive SUV is too close to my car.
Can anyone give me a real reason? And don't say "cause I have kids" because you don't need at that freaking room. My mom did fine lugging around 2 kinds in a Duster. And unless you live on a farm, you don't need it for "haulin' stuff." Also, I live where there are no mountains or snow or any environmental reason.
I just don't get it.

Because they want to feel safe.
I hate suv's, I hate everything about them. I can't stand when those pieces of shit park along side of me in a parking lot and I have to use the fucking force just to back out.

Lala, it all comes down to one thing.
People as a whole, are sheep, and the pack is driving SUV's at the moment.

It's an issue of perception over reality. Those monstrous things make the typical soccer mom FEEL like she is safe and more in control. They do give a better view of the road, and despite the yearly government crash and roll-over tests, the public still believes "big=safe."

I've got a full size 4 door pickup, my other car is also a truck
2 teenage kids and a 4500lb boat leaves me with a choice of a full size truck or a yuppie-mobile. I used to have an SuV before they became popular and unaffordable. Of course no one called them SuVs then either.
I see an explorer/suburban/expedition/etc.. crashed about every other week from morons trying to drive them like a compact car. Cleans out the gene pool a bit I guess.

I have a Dodge Ram ... I bought it cause I was moving to Florida and my Mazda B2300 couldn't pull a fully loaded UHaul trailer. It's a V6 though... so I'm still kind of environmentally minded!

Vehicles classed as trucks/utility vehicles don't have the 5mph bumper, side impact or rollover requirements that passenger cars do. Funny really, as they are much more likely to roll.
Dodge and Toyota are the only ones I know of that include rollover protection in thier trucks. The others may, but I haven't looked lately.

Welcome to HELL!!!
Now back on the subject of SuVs. I personally own a Suburban that has been tweeked. <lowered-rims/tires-mod chip- etc> I can see where people would be annoyed with SuVs. They are big and some assholes that drive them try to park them in parking spots that are to small.
I personlly park away from everyone, but that me.

I drive a Ford Bronco
I got it because I drive back and forth to the coast in the winter over snow so I wanted a 4-wheel drive, haul a motorcycle trailer occassionally on weekends (not so much now as I am selling my bike), and haul a boat occassionally in the summer. That and yeah I like to be higher off the ground for better view.
I have been in one accident since buying the bronco 7 years ago and the little car that hit me was totalled. Bronco survived with merely some alignment issues.
The only problem is that sometimes it is damn difficult getting up into it with certain skirts on. I have perfected the seat-hop.

I own the largest SUV in production by American companies. Go fuck yourself if you don't like it.
I have three kids, myself and my wife to move around. All of us are close to or more than 6 feet tall.
I also haul a travel trailer, a horse trailer, a cattle trailer, feed, etc with that SUV.
I also live 2 miles down a gravel road. Pice of shit rice burners last about two years there before body panels start dropping off. They also sit for two months every year until one of those evil SUV's opens the road for em.
In short, piss off. I didn't want to own three vehicles to do what this one vehicle does. You want to talk about resource hogging and environmental damage, let's talk about people who trade their vehicles in every two years.

Ok Fallanthas, you live in a rural area I take it, and have a load of kids....so you have a real need for a vehicle like this! Sadly, the majorit of the SUV owners out there do not. In fact, they don't even come close.
I should clarify...the SUV drivers I hate are the ones I see driving around fucking LA! ESPECIALLY the Cadillac SUV, which is more often than not lowered, 19" wheels installed with low profile tires, and bumping bass I don't want to hear. All the shallow-self-important-attitude fuckwads that are bred in vast numbers here in LA seem to have one.
Then we have the far more numerous suburban dweller who drives a Ford Excursion as a daily driver. Sitting in the far left lane of the freeway going slow, taking up 2 parking spaces at any parking lot they dock the thing at! These are people with maybe 2 kids...no boat, no trailers of any kind, and a 1500 square foot house squeezed into the smallest lot possible.

I think the real concern here is people who dont NEED them. I'm talking about the couple with no kids who lives in the 'burbs and insist in driving an SUV and truck to their white-collar jobs every day.
Hell, even if they have a couple kids, they don't need to drive such monsters. If only the people who actually need that kind of power/space/size drove them, that would be fine. It would be like it used to be. There wouldn't be so many around.

Wow I cant belive how much rage a car can bring I dont see anyone whining about the Crotch Rockets that take up a quarter parking spot zig zagging in and out of traffic.

The nice thing about America is....
The freedom to drive whatever the fuck you want.
I get tired of people hopping up on thier damn soap box bitching about the enviroment. Then using disposable plastic pens, eating at McDonalds, dumping tons of plastic shit into landfills, eating pork and chicken from farms that contaminate millions of gallons of water daily.
Clean up your own fucking waste before you start bitching about mine.

Folks like this make me smile. They are usually the ones I see in the ditch along the interstae come first snowfall. Seems they never thought to apply physics to driving. Sure, four-wheel drive and those fat tires mean you can get up to highway speed in the snow, but they don't make you maneuver or, most importantly BRAKE any better than any other vehicle on the road. Stupid.
Pardon the rant, this is one of those stereotype things that pushes my buttons.

Hehe, my wifes full size truck outruns most of the bling-mobiles. It's pretty funny. And it gets 22mpg, not the best, but too bad either.
Those exhaust tips and stickers just don't do what they used to I guess.

These people remind me of the mini-truck I came across one day...
There are a few beaches in Oregon that you can drive on and near my family's house is one of them. This retard took his lowered mini-truck piece of crap (yes, think late 80's) down onto the sand, then proceeded to get it stuck while the tide came in. No, he didn't get it unstuck in time. And yes, it was quite an amusing sight to see.

That is one of the funniest thing in winter. All the damn 4x4s that are in ditches. Ya think that they would realize that 4 wheel drive only helps on acceleration, stopping is another matter. <Down shifting doesn't count>

Owned an excursion for about a year.. say what you want.. it was damned comfortable.. live in the Black Hills of south dakota which regularly gets feet of snow at a time. never got stuck with it..
when i bought it gas prices around here were in the 1.19 range so not to bad.. when prices jumped to 1.89 and higher for a solid 6 months i ditched it for my Blazer.. definately not as roomy. Once i'm in it i'm okay for the most part.. but i definately feel..... confined..
but i tell ya 4 adults and 2 kids driving from rapid city to disneyland was an enjoyable and comfortable 20 hour drive in that excursion with plenty of room for everyone and luggage..
We went OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of places with that vehicle.. for long road trips it was the best.

Who the hell cares how long the car is. You can't see past the fucking things because they're too damn tall not because they're too long.
Ohh another gem, you can't clear the snow off the roof because soccermom_01 stands only 5'3". That has the nice side effect of flying off of the roof and into the poor schmuck behind them.

I used to have a fully loaded Jetta. When I did, I hated SUVs because you can't see around them, and they take up entirely too much room in a lot of parking situations.
Somehow I ended up buying an Xterra, and I absolutely love it. It's comfy, and I can drive over shit if I want to which is great fun. The mileage does suck, but since I pay for the gas, I don't fucking care.

I don't understand all the h8 for SUV's. I drive a little car, too, but wtf is the big deal if some single folks or married couples w/o kids want to cruise in their Tahoe, Explorer, etc.? It's their money to spend. And it doesn't make their SUV any easier to see around if they have 7 kids in it.

My first new vehicle was an Xterra. I f00ken loved that thing. It was a lot of fun to drive, etc etc...what Aranuil said.
I traded that thing in after a year for a mustang GT. I enjoy the added speed...but damn I miss being that high above traffic. An exterra is not that much higher, but it was enough to see.
In the end...all an suv is, is a higher riding station wagon to cart kids around...atleast in this area it is.

Around 5 years ago the only vehicle that really offered something different was SUV's. Now I think more people are starting to get cars from all new ones coming out. Cars like the new 350z and others with cool concepts such as hard top convertables are starting to draw people back to cars.

Fallanthas,
You are the VERY rare exception! Most people that drive SUV's think that going off road is when they turn into their drive way. The heaviest thing they haul is their fat ass, and their children are barney damaged brats.
Slow Urban Vehicles are one of the strongest signs of just how dumb 99% of the population. I know a Ford Excursion owner that is a SWM, lives alone and bitches about how much gas costs all the damn time. I asked him why he drove that piece of shit, his answer was, " Women like them"
Of course I prefer my Convertible GT Mustang over any of that crap, I choose not to have the insurance costs of the Cobra, and instead have every option known to man and Ford. But the call of the ignorant remains strong to most.

Solid ice > 4 wheel drive
Too many 4x4 owners forget this. You don't get greater traction or stopping power... you just get 2 extra wheels, spinning on ice.
I think the SUV issue can be debated well on both sides, but the truth is that SUVs are popular because of marketing. As Kylere pointed out, people are sheep, and as such tend to follow the current trend. The new yuppie vehicle went from Beemers and Porches to Eddie Bauer edition Explorers and Lincoln Navigators.

Most breeders I know have either a mini-van or an SUV. The smart ones have mini-vans. They have more of everything except ground clearance compared to SUV's, and since they don't have the drag coefficient of a brick like most sport utes, they are also fantastic for road trips.

Although I do hate not being able to look over or around SUVs & huge trucks, the fact is, I hope to get one in the future.
Mainly because I have an 85 lb dog that we like to travel with and the poor thing can barely stand up in a regular car. And one of these days, I want to get a 2nd dog so I'll really need room for the both of them.
Btw, soccer moms in huge excursions and suburbans are crazy drivers!
There are about 6 schools surrounding where I live and various baseball, soccer, and football fields and whichever direction I take, I always have to pass 1 or 2 schools and a field. It never fails to see a mother in one of those huge beasts maneuvering to get their kid to school or to an afterschool activity and they will run you over to get there on time!

Why doesn't that surpise me. You probably drive around like an inbred loony crashing into light poles and small cars as well. I can just picture you cutting across grass medians dragging your family dog by the back bumper again, dreaming about getting home and making an even uglier sig picture.
I'm just picturing your red white and blue I SUPORTS TEH WAR ON TERRERISM bumper sticker while you stop at every second gas station for another load of premium unleaded.
I fucking hate SUVs. I fucking hate people who drive SUVs. Somehow deep in the pit of my soul I already knew you were an SUV person; you're retarded enough. I look forward do the day when a shopping cart hits your back bumper too hard and your gas tank ignites because your shitbox is built so shoddily.
