Opening Day is here. Which means that summer isn't far behind. For some reason I'm really looking forward to the season, hope some of you are as well.
So, who do you think is going to win tonight? Boomer or Johnson?

All I know is that 9 innings straight of Sterling is going to grow old really fast. While Suzyn Waldman is very versed on the game, she has a voice that is quite possibly the most annoying sound in existence, maybe second only to fingernails on a chalkboard.

I figured the tall skinny guy(Johnson) would beat out the fat guy(Wells) this afternoon. What I didn't realize was how good H Matsui is... I mean, I knew this guy was good, but damn... just opening day but he had a brilliant game!
I am no fan of them, but the Yanks looked good all around. (And it was good to see Giambi plunked.)

GoGo Godzilla
Apparently he was killing the ball in spring training. Coming at a good time to since he's up for arbitration this year I believe. He also never misses a game.

Pedro?
A Mets fan huh.
YOU MUST LOSE!
I should be at the Reds-Mets game today. But I got aced out of my ticket. Instead Im actually stuck at work today. Thats a crime in the cinti area. Opening Day is like a holiday here. The city nearly shuts down...and Im stuck at work.
Taking bets on when Griffey will be injured this year

End of next week. And don't feel too bad about being at work, The Reds will be out of the playoff chase by tomorrow anyway. Along with about 20 other teams. We already know the probable playoff teams.

Memo to mets fans:
you aren't winning the division this year either. again.

I will not be starting a D-Backs thread like my Suns thread.
I thought you all should know that! It's not a season on the brink. It's probably not even a season of +.500 baseball. They could still win their division though. That's how bad it is.

Cincinnati must treat it as a holiday as they don't get the oppurtunity to celebrate championships.
BTW....Mets might finish in front of the Nationals this year. Too bad the Phillies, Braves, and Marlins all still are in the East though. Grats on 4th....again.

Nah, they'll be pretenders until a few weeks before the ASB again...just like every other year.

jesus, that was brutal. Pedro gets that type of backup, he's going to be chirping, no doubt.
But, hey, Koo sounded great
the after interview on the radio had Willie chiming how perfect a day today was for baseball. blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda, not really that bad of a loss until Pedro starts to punch lockers

Matsui with another 2 RBIs. Hes on fire and its only his second game. If Dimitri Young has another multi-HR night in his next game, this is going to be an interesting season.

ummmm.
John Smoltz
5 earned runs. 1 inning
2 innings. 7 earned runs.
Not the best of beginings for Smoltzie.

To be quite frank, any team that has their 3 and 4 starters out on the DL is going to have trouble. But hey, at least 1 is kicking ass

Nice game by Martinez today--I am glad he got a W. Moreover, the first win of the season came at the last possible moment... they would have gotten some serious flak being 0-6 returning to Shea.
1-5 still sucks, but it is amazing how much a game like that means sometimes.
The whole pitching scenario is scary... maybe they can find some way to scrape by until things(hopefully) solidify. Of course, I say this every year.
And to all the Smoltz naysayers, I predicted over 15 wins for him a ways back--I really think he can do it!

15 K's for Smoltz against the Mets. Great job of Atlanta's hitters in busting out 2 whole hits to support him. When the fuck will they ever learn and trade Andruw "Crisco" Jones to eliminate that non-hitting piece of shit and use that money to buy 2 solid hitting outfielders?
BTW....I am starting the call for the trade of Tom Martin to anyone that will take him. Can I get an Amen?
Posted: April 11, 2005, 12:12 pm
by Voronwë
Yeah, i think i can get LH hitters out as well as Martin.
i'm trying to get Schurholtz on the phone to see if I can try out today at lunch
he's terrible.
I'm not ready to give up on Andruw yet. The Braves typically start slowly, so no reason to worry about anything. Furcal also isnt hitting yet, and Giles being out really doesnt set the offense up. Giles is their second best hitter really.
The Raul Mondesi experiment is going terrific

Posted: April 11, 2005, 1:57 pm
by Homercles
What? Giles is out? How can this be?
Hes hurt as often as Griffey. Hes a hell of a productive player when he plays, but damn hes hurt a lot

I've have an inexplicable hate for Andruw Jones. I'm not a Braves fan but think he's been a curse on that team for years.

I say trade him now, bring Andy Marte up to play center, put Jordan on the bench and let Langerhans play left. Get a good set of relievers and some prospects for Crisco and save yourself an assload of money for a guy who just does not produce. Do you realize that Crisco is making more than Sheffield? Who would you rather have coming to the plate with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out? Do you cringe when you realize that GIDP Jones is walking to the plate? Has anyone ever grounded into more game ending DP's than Andruw?

I think Cliff Floyd used the term "Scary" to describe Smoltz's performance. This would make sense he was absolutely clueless against him with all three appearances k's.
I wouldn't worry about the staff too much. I'm sure there's nothing to be concerned about w/ Ishii and Heilman taking charge

Yeah Beltran was sitting on that splitter and hit a good one. he's just a great hitter.

Totally agree. In the fantasy baseball world, he is a fantasy stud. Probably not worth the salary he is getting (no one is) but if anyone should be in the top 5, it should be him.

Clemens vs. Ishii tonight.... hrmm
However, Piazza is almost .500 against the big angry redneck.

Then again, Piazza has been hitting the ball very hard...into a glove... ah well
It is pretty cool to see Randolph's version of Billy Martin's style of baseball.

Holy Shit!!!!
Aaron Heilman, 1-hitter vs. FLA, and that one hit was a dribbler!! Why on Earth did they fuck with his arm position after he was 15-0 in college?? Now that he is back to 3/4 he has been impressive, to say the least--his first 2 seasons with the Mets he was terrible.
He had the 1000 yard stare in the dugout the whole game and didn't crack a grin till all the handshaking was over... if he can keep this up, the Mets management may have some issues trying to figure out what to do with 6 starting pitchers once Benson is back.
Either way, damn!

Jon Garland for the White Sox had a perfecto through 6.1, but he just walked a guy. I like this kid, he has so much potential and I dug his stuff since he was a rookie.
Hope he gets the no-no at least!
Edit: As I posted this, he allowed a base hit up the middle. Oops, jinx!

How about that Kolb dude? If he continues at this pace, Smoltz may be forced back into the closers role.

Kolb is sucking it hardcore. They never should have fucked with a good thing. Smoltz is a great closer at this point in his career and having a closer who rarely strikes out people is a rough thing. They would have been much better off scoring one more good starter over getting Kolb.
I say they move Kolb for a good starter ASAP and put Smoltzy back where he belongs.

Fuck more starters....for Christ's sake get SOME OUTFIELDERS WHO HIT!
Goddamn they are pathetic.....led by Crisco Jones and his normal .260 average. For fuck's sake you might as well at least bring up the minor leaguers to hit .180 and get them some experience. Kolb and the whole outfield should be shipped off for Ugueth Urbina and a pack of trading cards.
At least they cut that bum Tom Martin. Smoltz has been damn well impressive the last 2 outings. 3 runs in 2 starts should equal at least 1 win unless your offense sucks incredible amounts of ass. Mike Hampton may well be back to a Cy Young form this year though. His ball is sinking and over the last couple years he has gotten stronger in the second half. He will need to pitch complete games to get wins though.
