I think I'm in the market to buy clubs, and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on brands/models/places to buy?

My skill level is sub-mediocre and I'm not looking to buy the greatest clubs in the world, but I would like something decent. My only other concern is that I get a bag that is roomy enough for me to fit a bunch of balls (cause i'll lose a shitton of them) and enough beer and/or booze to get nice and drunk on those occasions when I don't feel like hitting on the beer cart girl.

I think I was looking at budgeting around $500, though I could increase that if it's not enough.

I am about an 8 Handicap, I play with knock offs I got for about 187 dollars(Pw-3) and they work great. 500 dollars may be tough if you want to include some woods and a good bag. Oglie makes great cart bags, very roomy. I got a 12 pack in mine and I carry a ton of balls. You can try the ebay route, or go to Golfsmith and buy some used gear, that is going to get you the best clubs for the money.

Calloway obviously is very good, Nike is ok. Just pick the club that feels best to you. If you go to Golfsmith, they can test your swing speed and recommend something for you. I actually dumped my graphite clubs and sacrificed some distance by going to steel shafts, but my scores dropped 5 strokes. Good luck and see you on the links.

If I even start golfing again, I'm just gonna suck it up, and get a custom fitted set of Pings. Those irons felt so nice.

I have a custom set of Pings. They are the sweetest clubs I've ever hit with. I will say that any set that is custom sized for you is the best way to go....and here is how I did it:

1) go to real golf shop (golf only store) and get sized for the clubs you want to buy.
2) take measurements home
3) goto ebay until you see someone selling a set of clubs to those specifications
4) buy for fraction of the price (I got my set of Pings for $300 shipped...they would have been $950 from the guys at the golf store.)

Or buy knock offs to your measured numbers from the shop, that will only run you $200 or so like stated above.

As for a bag, look for a "Play it again sports" store, and buy a bag that someoen sold to them that they won in a tournament, but didn't want.

I'm a cheap bastard with golf, cause it is an expensive hobby.

I always tell anyone I know that is going to buy a set of clubs, is get them fitted to you!
