Windows 2k Problem

I just recently upgraded my OS to Win2k pro and now I've got no sound from my sound blaster live card. I know that there is an issue of compatibility between win2k and sound blaster cards, but I went to the creative site and got some drivers that are only a few months old which are supposed to fix the problem. I installed them and it says that my sound card is working properly in my device manager but I still get no sound. Has anyone had this problem before and/or does anyone know how to get rid of it short of buying a new card? Thanks.

Check the BIOS settings, maybe? I've gone in there and disabled the sound, then re-enabled and been fine. Not sure if it would work the same way in W2K or not though.

I agree, unfortunately. 2k isn't very game friendly, it's just NT4 with nicer menus after all.
98SE, ME, or XP are all good options. XP is a major memory pig though, 512Mb+ and it runs decent. While it will run on less, it sucketh big donkey balls. Cruises right along with 768Mb+.

Yeah I'd like to get XP but someone just gave me 2k for free, and its better than 98 or ME so I'm using it. Oh well, its not a big deal to me really since I don't play EQ anymore and sound isn't extremely crucial to me at this point.

I had the same problem! I upgraded from win98 2nd ed to win2kpro and then to win xp. I could not get my sb live value to work. I did all the new drivers, checked all the connections, made sure any onboard sound bullshit was disabled, and still no luck. It didn't matter if I had the original speakers or traded them out with other speakers, it still failed. But, get this, I swapped out the sound card for some panosonic shit and it all worked great. However, I tried the speakers from the original set up and they still didn't work.
I recently built a new computer. I refused to even try that SB Live card. Save yourself a shit load of frustration and just buy a new card.

A lot of new motherboards have onboard sound and network. Try those next time, they often time are decent, as well. Although, some of the boards for p4's (cant remember the exact name), have a bad network card built in. Just a slight drawback, since network cards are like 15 bucks.

Thanks Bubba. I figured that it was probably not going to work even with the latest drivers. At least sound cards are pretty cheap right now so its not a big deal to get a new one.
