Okay, I'll give this game a go here. With 500 VVs at stake (distributed amongst the winner(s))

After the signup, I will select some people who are mafia. Depending on how many people sign up there may be many or a couple.

There will also be one or a couple detectives. Every (8 hours ish) Night will come, and the Mafia PMs me who they want to kill from the list of players.

During the day, the Detective will PM me who they want to put on trial.
It is then that person's responsiblity to post a defense or a "Why I am not mafia." post. After the defense, everyone will vote on whether or not they think they are the Mafia.

Those who are not Mafia, and not Detectives are simply citizens who try to figure out who the Mafia are. Obviously I will not tell you who the Mafia or Detectives are.

If more peope vote that the person on trial is mafia, then that person is sent to the chair. After that, night falls again, and it's the Mafia's turn to off someone else.

A couple other of the subtleties of the rules:

Dead people cannot post their suspicions. They can post - just not with who they think did it. They also cannot vote at trials.

When someone is offed by the mafia or given the chair I will reveal what they were, citizen, mafia, or detective.

The game ends when:

The Detective is killed. (Mafia win)
The Mafia are killed. (Detective/Citizens win)

If many more people sign up, I will add few more conditions...depends how big this gets.

i dont have a chance to keep up on the hour every hour with the baord. i check in fairly frequently though. what is the timeline going to be like?

Nah not like every hour. It will generally be: Trials in the morning, Mafia kills in the evening. And between that is discussion of who could or could not be Mafia. If you check in about twice a day or so you should be good.

Careful...if you are mafia that might not be such a good idea to say. Trial comes right after night, and you can get the chair.

Spang steps out of the guitar shop after spending a few hours trying out the guitars. He didn't have money to buy a new one but he had decided in his mind on the perfect guitar. At the start, I doubt you have much information either way as to who did what. I don't know Spang, so I haven't had any reasons to talk about his death - other than somewhere, Wiley Cyote is suing for copyright infringement. Really just waiting on Lhorno to kick in with the morning update to steer us citizens in the right direction.

The beginning of the day brings a sigh of relief for many. One will go to trial today. Detective, tell me who you wish to bring to trial. Trial will start between 11pst.

At the beginning of the game it's kind of hard to say and random usually. But people here undoubtedly leave clues as to their identity after that. That is where the deduction comes from.

Nobody, the detective decides who to put on trial. You can post your suspicions, and maybe he will listen.
