Problems with MX 1000

Since I finally got rid of my "ball and chain", I can play shooters on my own computer, rather than having to rely on my friends. I've already ordered HL2 and Doom3, and have a few older titles to entertain me while I wait for them to arrive.
I loaded up Halo, to test the mouse's meddle against the many opticals I had used over the years. I noticed right off the bat that the mouse was destructively fast on the menu screen, and there was no real way to tame it. Changing the mouse speeds in the game or with Setpoint (handy MX 1000 software) seemed to only minimally adjust what was already an annoying problem. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.
Also, and even more annoying, is the fact that I couldn't bloody program any buttons except "scroll up, scroll down, left click, right click" to perform any functions within the game. I want to tell myself that it's only because Halo's an older title. I'd like some confirmation on this.
Last of my problems is the "application switcher" button. While playing Halo, pressing it (whether on accident or purposefully) would, of course, window the game out and bring up the same menu accessed when using "alt + tab". As I said earlier, I couldn't program this button to perform another function within Halo. I could disable the feature entirely, but it would be annoying to have to toggle it back and forth every time I felt like playing a shooter (or even EQ, etc).
Other than that, I enjoy using my head or my arm as a mousepad.
