Not all virii require you to open an attachment or other interaction...

A firewall is the only protection I'm running atm on my system. I do this mostly cause I've parked it in the DMZ of my local network.

I'm not scared. I had CA's yearlong free thing for about 4 months earlier this year and nothing at all popped up on my system for that duration.

I don't think you're a fucking idiot, but you are incredibly, incredibly naive. Viruses, worms and malware are getting more devious more pervasive every single day. It's as foolish to think you don't need antivirus software as it is to think that antivirus software alone will protect you.

I agree that AV is required in 99% of cases. I use AV on my work laptop where stuff on the HDD matters.

My home system however is primarily a gaming box. To that effect, no data on is crucial is really important. I monitor my running processes quite often and lookup stuff that I don't recognise quickly. If it were to get infected with something, then I would run whatever cleaning tools were required and move on.

I administer the AV at my office and find that even some vendor's policies on definition updates are lacking. I make a point of downloading the symantec intelligent updates when more than 2 days without a new definition has passed.

I know the threat and how devious these writers are. Not having AV on my home computer is a concious choice and I fully accept the consequences of it.
