While you're at it, make sure your anti spy/adware software is up to date and run a scan!

For some reason I read that as Winnow Updates. I was looking at the posts and wondering why the hell would Winnow nail us with spyware? Totally had me perplexed.

Shouldn't the critical updates install automatically?

Hehe, we had to uninstall one of the 2 new ones on our server at work, conflicted with several important hospital programs.

Only if configured to do so. I myself like to know what's being installed so I have this turned off.

My work laptop that I don't have control over is setup to auto-download patches, but not install them until I tell it to, or 3AM whichever is first.

There are three options with the automatic updates. One is to notify you which ones are available. It's then up to you to select them and click Update (or OK or whatever it is).

No IE required.

They can install automatically but it still uses the IE engine to do the actual install automatically or manually.
