I'm looking to buy a new computer since my current dinosaur is in the process of making it's slow descent into the firey depths of computer hell.

One of the things I'm looking at is getting a laptop to replace my desktop. I'd like to spend about 2k to get something nice that'll last me a while. I've hit up a lot of the manufacturer sites out there, but it's a lot of information to process. Can anyone give me some advice on which systems give the best bang for the buck?

I'm currently looking at the HP ZD7000, as a starting place. Any info on this machine?

If you are planning to use the new computer for gaming at all, especially graphically intensive games (EQ or above), I strongly recommend a desktop rather than laptop. While it would be easy to build a fairly kickass gaming box for $2000, you'd be hard pressed to find a laptop that can compare to that machine for twice the cost. You're generally stuck with what you buy in a laptop, where desktops are generally* very upgradeable.

If you don't travel or have a need to work in multiple locations, don't buy a laptop. They aren't upgradeable, are slower, and break much more often than a desktop costing half the amount.

In short, laptops are very nice until you have one.

I'm a student, and on campus at least 50% of my time, which is why I'm considering a laptop.

There was a 'Which laptop to get' thread not long ago. I'm sure it's still somewhat relevant.
