Allright. I put my second copy of my PoP disk into my pos compaq. The accompaning sound out of the drive gave me visions of someone using a weedwhacker on said disk. Now, I cannot get the drive to register ANY disk, at all, regardless. Win98 says that the drive is working properly.

I need some major help 'ere.. preferably somthing that doesn't require me replacing the drive / computer. Preferably somthing I can do before my fiancee wants to play The sims again.. and finds out she can't. <looks around in slight terror>

Bite the bullent and buy a new HD. If price is an issue, just get a smaller one. 20-30 gigs will cost less than 40$.

When I was desperatly strapped for cash once I got a job at the company that does supprot for RoadRunner. One lady I spoke to put the CD in her compaq CD/DvD rom and she got some wierd noises and the disk SHATTERED in the drive..

With what you're saying I'm starting to think that it may not have been the disk..

the disk SHATTERED in the drive
That happened to one of my friend's mother's computer. We thought she really fucked something up and was trying to cover it up with a lame excuse. Granted, it certianly looked like it shattered the disk, but at that time, we had never heard of such a thing. This was about 3 years ago. Anyway, pretty interesting to see another example.

The sound was from the DVD/CDROM drive?

Or the harddrive?

If it was from the DVD drive easiest thing is probably to just buy another and replace the existing one. Not difficult to do at all.

If it's the harddrive, same thing although you have to rebuild the OS and re-install all your shit.

Not even a DVD drive, just an old CD ROM drive, and that's where it came from.

Most new HD's come with a disk that will essentially ghost your existing drive so there is no Rebuilding the OS or anything. Just be sure to set the new drive as Slave (if on same IDE Channel as first HD) or set it accordingly if on secondary channel. Once done, move it to the first IDE Channel, set it as Master, set original drive as slave and then boot. Should work without a problem.

As for CD drives failing, nothing like watching a fractured disk blow off the CD cover destroying the drive :D Only thing you can do with the drive is maybe try cleaning it. If that fails, replace it :( CD-ROM drives are fairly inexpensive these days. 50 bucks will get you a 52X CD-ROM, 60-70ish for a DVD Drive.

I watched that happen one time. Craziest thing in the world. The cover to the CD-ROM blows off, and out comes fragments of disk at like super-sonic speeds. They definitly would have gone into skin if anyone was standing infront of them. Was pretty damn hillarious too, so we tried to reproduce it on a really shitty cd-rom. We took an exacto-knife and cut a straight line down the center of it. Stuck it in there, and all we heard was *POP*, and then smoke. Pulled out the drive later and determined the disk wasnt spinning fast enough for the cover to blow off ^_^. I think the CD-ROM was an OLD 8x CD-ROM.
