I have a stick of 512 DDR ram in my machine. Now I am not sure if this is 2700 or not. I check all the likely spots like the bios and system and such but I can't find anything more than it being 133. Or is that it 133? I wasn't sure about the hiearchy of ram. The only markings on the stick are M209301A and 64D33SA32 and it looks like someone scribbled 2600. Is 2600 even an option? I ask because I am looking to add another 512 stick.

It depends on your processor Bubba. If you have a new P4 800Mhz FSB bus CPU with Hyperthreading then you want the same 512mb and same speed ram to match up with it.

If you have an older CPU, you can get whatever Ram you want that fits into your DDR slot. 3200 is cheap these days.

Get yourself to 1GB though. It's worth it for the performance these days. I'm heading to 2GB next week and have 1.5GB in my other machine. Games like EQ2 will use every bit of your 1GB and will run even better with 1.5-2GB of Ram. In general though, 1GB should be the standard.

That wasn't really his question. He's wanting to know how to find out what speed the 512 he already has is.

Yeah, in order to add more ram. Per my post, he should check and see what processor he has. If it's not an HT CPU, he doesn't really need to check further.

Cool. Thanks guys. I have an older AMD 2700 chip that is about 2.12 gig ish.

its probably 2100 or 2700.. if you can't find out for certain i'd make sure the ram you buy can underclock.

I have another question regarding RAM: Which brands are considered the best at the moment? Back last time I bought RAM, Crucial was the best bang for the buck. I'm looking for a 512MB DDR PC2700(or higher) stick to bring me up to 1gig!

my personal favorite is mushkin, corsair and crucial are still great.. i don't like kingston very much, my last stick was causing me to crash out of everything every 5 minutes... i'm hearing good things about pdpsys.com's patriot ram also, but have never used any myself.

I would agree with Mushkin and Corsair, but I haven't heard bad things about Kingston.
