NFL Action: Week 2

Okay, going to try an NFL sportsbook for VVs. Taking the lines from BoDog at noon eastern on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004. You may bet any number of VVs up to your total number of VVs, and all bets will be paid by sometime next week. Bets will only be considered valid if they were posted before kickoff of the game in question, you have enough VVs to cover them and you use the tag to highlight them. All wins will be paid on a -110 money line, meaning if you bet 110 (or 55 or whatever) VVs and win, you'll win 100 (or 50 or whatever) VVs. If a spread is a whole number and results in a push, bets will be refunded. If you have questions, post them in this thread or pm me.

This rocks! : ) Sylvus, I recommend you take the money out of accounts yourself so you can keep track.

For example, if I bet 110 on a game here. You take the money directly out of my account and send a PM or something. Unless you have a better way. People will forget to give the VVs otherwise.

Edit: should we post our picks here or PM? Posting here makes it more fun I would think : )

Just a note for those with few VVs. Using the -110 line

Some examples:

Bet 11 VVs to win 10
Bet 22 VVs to win 20
Bet 55 VVs to win 50
Bet 1100 VVs to win 1000

You could bet oddball numbers but lets make it easy for Sylvus! (don't forget these bets include the spread)

Someone help me figure out how to read this shit. =( The over/under is fairly simple, and I can assume by looking at the teams that whichever has the negative number is the favorite. But what the hell does that number mean. =p

Never have bet beyond winner/loser! And even that is just to see who's paying for dinner after the game. =p

Thanks!

The number is the point spread. To help make gambling more of a challenge, sports books assign a point spread to the teams. This means that in the case of the Patriots/Cardinals game, betting on the Pats means subtracting 8.5 points from their score to determine if you won the bet, and betting on the Cardinals means adding 8.5 points to their final score.

So if you bet on the Pats, and the final score is Patriots 38, Arizona 30, even though the Pats won the game you would lose the bet.

I was gonna put my VV's on the Texans/Lions under and it looked good in the first half until the virtual scoring explosion in the second half.

I actually watched the shitty hometown Lions and Harrington throw countless 1-yard dropoffs on 3rd and long. I swear I thought I was watching the Wolverines play.

But anyways, looks like I will be rooting gor the Lions to win the NFC North title (unlikely). But damn, I have to be optimistic for some instate team now that the Wolverines season is over.

Let me say, Roy Williams is impressive and at this point has a good shot at NFL Offensive ROY. He's a far cry from the dissapointment that is Charles Rogers.

kevin Jones, is also showing signs of becoming a playmaker. The first few times he had the ball he tried to bounce out side and was snuffed. 7carries for 9yards. But then he picked it up and had 5 for 48 and was running through Texans.

Winners paid and bet highlighted in green.

Losers had VVs removed and bet highlighted in red.

Please let me know if I adjusted your VVs incorrectly.

Oh the shame!

WTF was I thinking betting the over on the Dolphins/Bengals... The other two are excusable but I must plead temporary insanity betting the over on a game that has two rookie QBs (Palmer is a red shirt rookie) and decent defenses.

I'm a little concerned on the Philly bet as well with Pinkston doubtful. That will allow the Viking defense to focus even more on TO.

Can't wait for the game tonight! It's one of the most entertaining MNF matchups of the year.

Feeley is at least a third year player.

Also, Pinkston being doubtful isn't too big of a problem. Freddie Mitchell is basically just as good, and trust me-- defenses aren't wasting any extra effort on Pinkston anyway. He's the Eagles number 5 passing weapon, after Owens, Smith, Westbrook, and Lewis.

Oops, my mistake on Feeley. It was his first start for the Dolphins.

Pinkston certainly did well the first game that TO was on the field in a regular season: 3 catches for 76 yards including a 54 yard bomb. Getting his regular season yardage record in a game the first time TO plays isn't a coincidence. I don't know of too many teams that will blow of a 54 yard bomb from a 5th option receiver. Mitchell was 1 for 22 that game.

Posted: September 21, 2004, 3:39 pm
by Winnow
Pinkston saved the day as a decoy in that game even though he didnt make a catch! : ) (then again, TO didn't make that TD catch either)

by Kelshara
The refs last night sucked heh. TO's TD wasn't a TD (although they most likely would have scored anyway). The holding call on Culpepper's run was very cheap. There should have been a taunting call after Moss dropped the one short pass and (I THINK it was) the Freak pushed the ball up in his face.

Vikings lost, deal with it

Posted: September 21, 2004, 4:12 pm
by Sueven
I love it. Complain complain complain. I'm a die hard Eagles fan in Redskins country, so I get to deal with it a lot. People fucking hate Terrell Owens.

Eagles 27
Vikings 16

It's in the books!

Sure, things could have gone different. Michael Lewis didn't have to get a 15 yard flag for whacking a barely-out-of-bounds Viking. The Eagles didn't have to commit a stupid off-ball holding penalty on a Vikings 3rd and 14. The breaks of the game are the breaks of the game, and winners take those breaks and win games.

"Your best? Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen."

You now know of at least 1.

BTW, I like TO. I have him in both Fantasy leagues. He's a stat machine and also does the little things like block downfield but he still didn't score that TD : )

I had the eagles -3 this week so I'm not whining.

Posted: September 21, 2004, 4:39 pm

Yeah, the TD was shady. It definitely wasn't a touchdown. It was either an incompletion or a pass to the one. It looked to me like he may have had control, had his knee down, and then had the ball jarred out. Or he could have just not held on to it. Since it wasn't reviewed, I never got enough angles or repetitions to really make a conclusive judgement.

Posted: September 21, 2004, 5:21 pm
by xZiBiT
Even though it doesn't matter at this point, it doesn't matter if the knee is down inbounds or not in the NFL if the ball moves or touches the ground when the receiver lands, it is an incomplete pass.

Very cleary the ball moved upon impact with the ground and may touched the ground, even though he had both feet(one knee) inbounds. It should have been incomplete because it was jarred out when he hit the ground.

The same thing happened in the Lions game this week for one of the Texans, the receiver got both feet down but after the impact with the ground he temporarily lost control and the ball never touched the ground. The ref came back and ruled it incomplete.

That being said guess who is in first place in the NFC North. GO LIONS!!!!!!111111111

Posted: September 21, 2004, 5:53 pm
by Sueven
You can be sitting on your ass to catch a pass. If it doesn't touch the ground, it doesn't matter. If I catch a pass, fall to the ground, have it jolted out of my hands, and regain control before it touches the ground, it's still a completed pass. There were multiple examples of this in last nights game.

That being said, that is not what happened with TO yesterday.

Posted: September 21, 2004, 6:10 pm
by xZiBiT
If your in bounds that is fine, what i'm saying. It happened in the Lion's game.

The receiver went up caught the ball came down two feet inbounds, landed out of bounds. When he hit the ground, the ball popped loose but didn't touch the ground (same thing that happened last night) and the ref overruled the call because he didn't maintain possession after he landed out of bounds.

In order for the pass to count if the receiver lands out of bounds is for them to maintain complete control after hitting the ground.

When I was giving my explanation, i was refering to the catch inbounds (get two feet/one knee) land out of bounds scenario. Sorry, for the confusion.

Yeah that TD by TO sealed my fate in one of my leagues. I was going against him with Westbrook and I was down by 12 at the start of the game but then I was almost tied. Damn TD screwed me.
