Need your opinion for building a website

Ok, so I am interested in building my own website.
I currently have a domain registered through http://www.1and1.com.
They offer several website packages.
What I want to do is a little webpage for about 5 of my friends. I wanted to have them logon with a username and password. They would create a character. I would give them stats such as hp, mp etc. I wanna basicly make a text based D&D type game with them. It would not exactly be real time but I would probably give them 5 turns a day or something. It would be a slow paced game but we do not mind.
I had learnt a bit of ASP (active server pages) in college about 3 or 4 years ago. I found that language to be fairly easy to use and flexible. I was going to maybe create a website using ASP. However, I wanted some input on what might make my experience a little easier and fun. I was reading briefly on the internet and now it seems that it's asp.net and no longer just asp.
Does anyone suggest using another type of language for my website?
Should I have my website hosted by a company?
If so does anyone have a company that has good prices?
Does a package have to include support for certain languages? (For example 1and1.com shows a package that supports asp.net.)
Would I be able to run the website myself off a computer at home instead of going through another company? I would not have much bandwidth usage so the download speeds off my computer should not matter much.
Any input on this would be very much appreciated. Even just point me into the rigth direction and I would do some reading up on it.

But if the site gets too big, ASP.NET goes a long way. ASP is still used by millions of developers, but once you go to ASP.NET, it's really hard to turn back
