:vv_soapbox:

Nah its not the population thing. Its a couple of things in my opinion.

First off, the goverment doesn't spend the money on the sports, nor does it care to promote them. Much rather spend the money on health care, leather shoes n undies and on shopping spree's. Since they are not providing the funds to train and compete as much/hard as other nations, why bother ?

The media does not care for "amature" sports until it is Olympic's time, so instead of knowing what the hell is going on in certain sports and being able to inform the Canadian public, they talk through their asses and public is left in the dark.

From my high school days and looking at Canadian colleges its very evident that athletic scholarships and athletic programs in general were lacking. Lacking in funds (both from school and the fucking Liberals) and lacking in interest, and when that happens why should students/teens/kids want to train/practise/push themselves when their colleges/univ. don't care that much.

Lastly, there's only one sport that accros the board Canadians care about as a whole, hockey. Canada is a hockey nation and damn good at it.

Once the government begins to show that it cares about the "amature" sports of Canada, its people will too.

This is just my opinion on why Canada is doing poorly at the Summer Games, and yes it grates me when I see such a low count.

And yes I am Canadian

Why would you need the government to care? Absolutely no need for that.

Holy shit! We got a silver? When did this happen...

Ya, the summer olympics hasn't really been our thing. A lot of it has to do with people not supporting our athletes (dollar wise).

The men’s coxless fours won silver early Saturday morning in rowing.
coxless? hehe.

You won a silver in rowing.
Karen Cockburn of Toronto won a silver medal in women's trampoline on Friday.
Trampoline! : )

I'm not necessarily bashing Canada here. I am sort of surprised at the low count. Canucks do ok in the Winter Olypmics. A lot of the summer Olympic events are indoors so the weather shouldnt matter. Shainral's post explained it somewhat.

"We are collecting the facts and thinking through the process rationally," he said, but would not comment further on Johnson or the Canadian team's failure to win an Olympic medal for the first time since 1964.

The 1964 team, however, had nine top-eight finishes. No Canadian swimmers qualified for today's final session, meaning that with no medals and only three top-eights, the 2004 group is tied with the 1960 squad for Canada's worst Olympic showing in the pool since 1952 in Helsinki. The best individual results for the 20-member team were two sixth-place finishes. The 4 x 200 metres freestyle relay team was fifth.

Oh come on. Our athletes work their tails off to compete in the Olympics. Granted, the event has lost much of its popularity due to various reasons, but I still am very happy that these kids(and old fogies) are going over there and doing well. :D You don't have to like it, but I see no reason to bash Americans for being proud.

Canada competes very strongly in the winter olympics, but not so much in the summer. That is because the sun never shines in canada for 10 months out of the year, eh? Most canadians don't even know what summer is all aboot.

You are about a worthless cumstain. I guess every country should abandon the Olympics since it is all cockfencing anyway....just to prove who is better at what. Someone put out the memo before they try to hold another Olympics that Karae thinks it is stupid.

You seriously need to relocate. Don't wait....get out now before you graduate from the U.S. school you picked to attend...and find a foreign company you can work for. I have cash that says you will be singing any tune you can to land the almighty green once you are done with school. Why don't you just move to a middle eastern country and herd goats where you can live with no need for the money of the white devil. You would definitely be among people that share your views.

Hey the truth hurts. The U.S. spends a huge amount of money to train and then promote its athletes, whether through funding a new gym for a school or promoting their Olympic athletes. It's just the truth.

And how many participants did we put out this year? 360-something or other? Who was the next highest on that list? At like 250-something? The numbers are wrong, I know, but it's to make a point. There's a lot to be said about how much money is put into athletics, and how many more humanitarian things could be done with that money, among them being healthcare. But hey, it feeds the American economy any time we do well in the Olympics (endorsements, events, etc), so I guess it makes sense business-wise. *shrug*

I like the Olympics, in principle, but its just turned into a huge international dick waving contest. Even Bush has managed to try and cash in on it with political ads using it to premote himself. Most of the summer events are all about how much legal sports drugs you can cram into the atheletes more than they are about talent (gymnastics and the sparring events being among the obvious exceptions) anyhow, with whoever has the most money invested hauling off the penis joust crown. They should just flat out fucking ban any form of sports medicine (other than those for curing injuries) and returning to the amature athelete only rule would be a good thing too, but that is never going to happen. In short, they took a really descent ancient tradition and turned it into something fairly hollow.

Jeeze you guys suck.

The Olympics are in the "spirit of competition"

I swear to fucking god you people will whine about anything. Don't you ever get tired of crying about everything the USA does?

I know it's a free country and you're free to say what you want, but I really wish you'd head off to some nice socialist country and fuck yourselves...oh wait..even they are proud of their athletes...I guess you just need to shoot yourselves in the head as there's really nowhere you whining pussys can go that aren't proud of their athletes in the olympics. Since I'm sure you'd bitch about any country you lived in, I just wish it was someone elses.

Hate to tell you this and actually give you real information, but even though "socialist countries" might be proud of their athletes, at least to my experience they applaud GOOD athletes even though they might not be their own. I find it really sad how the US coverage here not only has made the Olympics into a political event, but also focuses singlehandedly on American athletes while ignoring most other events. I'd way more like to see GOOD competition than to see my own country's athletes constantly wether they are good or bad.

But then again, that goes back to the whole debate about the average American not giving a shit about any sporting even where an American doesn't compete among the best.

Spirit of competition? Yea, I suppose that's why you're hear touting how superior the U.S.A. is just because we've won more medals.

Grow the fuck up. I never said I wasn't proud of our athletes. I only said that our winning more medals than Canada doesn't make us any better than them. That you, and others, try to use this as evidence to support that only evidences your extreme insecurity with the quality of our society. There are plenty of better reasons to tout American society. Of course, having never been outside the country, you wouldn't have any idea about what they are because you've never seen the alternative.

My statement is a reflection of my belief, that Olympic competition should be about *gasp* athletic competition, not an excuse for nationalistic bigotry, and all athletes should be recognized for their greatness, regardless of country.

Simple fact, we win more medals every year because we spend more money every year by an order of magnitude. That you'd use this as some kind of proof that the U.S.A. is superior to Canada, or any other nation, only serves to show that you a befuddled, drooling, and hopelessly insecure retard.

I've lived:

6 years in Germany
1 year in Italy
1 year in Switzerland
6 months in Australia

I wasn't even born in the United States. I was born in Germany and became a U.S. Citizen when I was 16.

I've clocked 8.5 years overseas. How about you? However much it is, I hope it triples soon.

My high school had 33 different countries represented from all over the world including at least 40 from the middle east out of 250 total students. I've been there and done that and the United States is where I want to be.

Actually USA currently has more medals (58) than China (46). And in all of the US media sites I've seen, USA is at the top position in the standings.

However, the official olympic standings doesn't only count the number of medals. It also takes the value of the medals into account
(a country with 2 gold is placed higher in the standings than a country with 59 bronze).

So currently in the official standings, China has the top position with 22 gold and US in 2nd with 21 gold.

Are you actually going to dispute my statement? No I don't think they can jump higher or lift more weight or are less intelligent. Jumping and lifting are very trainable and I have never seen a distinct advantage in jumping ability between white and black atheletes. The mind can also be trained just as well....and if you want to learn you will. The one thing you can't teach is speed (although you can refine your running style to get the most speed possible).

There are some physiological differences between whites and blacks, mostly in tendon attchment points and average curvature of the femurs, which COULD allow more efficient energy transfer.

That being said, I think that it's more of a cultural thing. A black kid in the states is WAY more likely to get positive attention from his peers for being fast than he is for getting good grades.

Did you see the French team during opening ceremonies? It appeared to be more than half black or Afro-French if you want to be politically correct.

While the U.S. may be the GNP equivalent of godzilla and use some of it to train athletes, check the rest of the field:

Afro-English
Afro-Canadian (Ben Johnson anyone?)
Afro-French
Afro-Add country here.

I'd say there are plenty of countries with african members including countries from africa! As for training them, I don't think anyone is going to blame our deficit or why people are starving in the world on the amount of money the U.S. spends helping our athletes.
Medal totals and expenditure on Olympic athletes for Canada, Britain and Australia for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Figures quoted are Canadian dollars, converted at year 2000 exchange rates.

Canada

Total medals won: 14

Money spent on Olympic athletes: $62-million

Cost per medal: $4.24-million

Cost per capita: $1.99

Britain

Total medals won: 28

Money spent on Olympic athletes: $238-million

Cost per medal: $8.50-million

Cost per capita: $4.00

Australia

Total medals won: 58

Money spent on Olympic athletes: $280-million

Cost per medal: $4.82-million

Cost per capita: $14.80
Interesting numbers. I'm trying to find the U.S. figures for comparison. I'd like to see where we fall in this analysis. While the overall cost per capita was more for Australians, the cost per medal was cheaper than for Britain. The canadians still spent 4+ million per medal.

It would be nice to see an entire list of countries like this.

The only disgrace is your butchering of the English language.

The reason Canada isn't more competitive in the Olympics is due to the embarrassing lack of funding from government and the private sector.

70% of Canada's Olympic athletes live below the poverty level.
The lucky ones get a $1100 monthly stipend from the government.
I can imagine how difficult it would be to work a part time job and still have time to train and compete at a world class level.

Most Norwegian athletes (both winter and summer) work part-time along with training and some financial support. And only the very best ones get the financial support. Takes a lot of dedication.

Sure it takes a lot of skill and good form, but the priorities are different. You need more strength than you need skill. The skill in weightlifting is easily trained, while the ability to even lift the weights is dependant on your strength. There's really no need to have an insult in every reply you ever make. Have you no concept of civililty? Jesus...

Yes and no, although you obviously can't do it without the strenght.. if your skill isn't perfect it will require a lot more strenght to lift less weights. I've always had problems with free-weight benchpress for some reason because my skill in it sucks. I am not particularly weak, but I have to use brute force instead to lift less weights.

While the snatch is more a matter of pure strength, the clean and jerk requires a lot more technique. If your form isn't tight in the clean and jerk, with the weight they're throwing around at the Olymipc level, it's REAL easy to dislocate all kinds of shit.

I'll keep this civil and I did respond to your point but I'll expand on it. I in no way think the U.S. is better than another country due to a medal count. It's sports and in the "spirit of competition" I take pride in my country. You've got to lighten up a bit. I was just as happy for the Romanian women's gymnastics team winning the gold. They deserved it and it was a great competition. But when my country does win a medal, I'm also proud.

I cheer on the United States in the World Cup Soccer when I know we'll get slaughtered. I don't feel shame when they lose. Just because I take friendly jibs at canada doesn't mean I dislike them. Canada rocks despite kyoukan and dregor.

I spent 7 days in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1984 before the Iron Curtain came down. I'm not sure how many here can say they've been behind the iron curtain before it collapsed. It wasn't a glamour tour. I walked around the streets and saw what it was like living in the Soviet Union. It was shitty to say the least but it also opened my eyes and gave me a much more balanced perspective on the actual people that lived there. They were great and friendly although living in quite miserable conditions. When I see one of the former eastern block countries win a medal, I know damn well that they had much worse conditions to train in their sport than the U.S. and I'm always respectful and applaud when they win.

I know you were talking out of your ass when you said I'd never been out of the U.S. but I hope this clears up that I've probably seen more than you in person including east berlin, prauge, malaysia, all of europe except scandinavia, New Zealand, Australia. The extended time I actually lived in Germany, Italy and Switzerland was spent living in small towns and not on air bases. It gave me ample time to see what high quality countries (well Germany and Switzerland at least as my year in Italy was mostly in Cagliari, Sardinia an island of the coast of Italy which is a little more third worldish) are like and I still choose the United States with no disrespect to those countries. For the canadians, I also spent several weeks one summer driving across your country staying at camp sites along the way so I've seen maybe as much of canada (at least the countryside) as some canadians and enjoyed my trip. And as for my own country, I've been in 48 out of 50 states so I've got a good grip on what the various regions of my own country are like.

I think I've earned the right to be proud of my country and at the very least, root them on in sports without being blinded by never seeing the rest of the world first hand. What I don't get is how you can hate this country so much. For all of it's faults, it still a great place to be.

I'd just like to add that Prague is a beautiful city and anyone who gets a chance should visit it :) Didn't see it before the iron curtain fell, but did see Budapest (not sure of English name heh) in Hungary before it fell.

I don't refute that weightlifting requires extraordinary skill. It's just convention to call this a physical rather than skill category. Same way running backs, wide receivers, and quarterbacks in american football are called the "skill positions". It doesn't mean the other positions don't require skill. In fact, defensive backs and offensive linemen are perhaps the most skill-challenging positions in the game. O-linemen are required to know so many assignments and variations in assignments based on the defensive alingments, and be able to adjust on the fly to rushing defensive linemen. It's a well known fact among football players that O-linemen are the smartest football players. Yet they are not categorized among the "skill positions". It's just convention...

Jumping and lifting are very trainable and I have never seen a distinct advantage in jumping ability between white and black atheletes. The mind can also be trained just as well....and if you want to learn you will. The one thing you can't teach is speed (although you can refine your running style to get the most speed possible).
over all i'd agree with the speed, it's been shown over and over again, the fastest runners have been black, basketball is also predominantly a black sport.

but stronger, eeeh . nope. that's dominated by scandinavian countries. only one black guy that i remember in the strongman competition and that was O.D. wilson and he never won.
