Ok, so here's my situation: most of my radio listening since, oh, say, the early 90's, has revolved mostly around sports talk radio. Take that and 10 years of marriage (now over, thankfully) to a woman who thought INXS and Duran Duran was great music, and well, I'm way behind the times when it comes to music. Not completely, but I know there's a ton of stuff out there that I'm just not familiar with. (This might be a good place to mention that my ex-wife called INXS "inks" and I'm now glad that I always snickered on the inside and never corrected her. Anyway, I digress...)

So I downloaded some of the songs in the "most depressing" thread and discovered a number of tunes that I liked. I downloaded the Beck suggestion and liked it, and so downloaded more. Somehow that led me to Seether and liked that too. I'd never heard either of them before but I like it, and I am starting to remember why I liked NIN.

Anyway, I'm looking for more of the same type of stuff- any suggestions? Anything else in general that you'd suggest?

I don't think I'm interested in anything too "out there" like Slipknot or anything, though, but I'd like to hear a lot of new stuff.

There's nothing wrong with INXS!

Yeah I have to say I still have quite a bit of INXS, and I still really like it. That said I don't listen to it all the time, but every now and again, it's great.

As far as new music, I'd recommend you download Itunes, and pick up DJ Tiesto's new 'Just Be' album. I can recommend a lot of other music, but it's really dependent upon what you like...

My discovery of Portishead came in a very.. interesting.. situation so I might be biased but I LOVE Portishead. I love their "Dummy" CD and if you want to check out a few songs I might suggest "Wandering Star", "Numb" and "Roads".

Else than that it so depends on what you like.. Between my gf and me we got pretty much every aspect of music covered (with exception of country..) so give me a hint and I'll see if I can dig up something.

If you don't have the video I can ship you a copy, in fact I have the entire discography which has every album/single/video on it.

And Seether owns. They recently released a cd titled Disclaimer II, which I hate the idea of, but I'd love to hear the new songs on it. It's basically Disclaimer plus five songs previously not included, four of which are new. Sucks to pay full price for a few new songs, but you could download them!

If you liked Seether a lot you might want to try Cold - either 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage or Year of the Spider. There's also Audioslave, which is Chris Cornell + most of the guys from Rage Against the Machine. Hopefully you already know Tool(you haven't been that far under a rock, have you? =p) Check out A Perfect Circle as well, JMK's second band.

Last one - Chevelle - Wonder What's Next.

Give those a try, some are similar to Seether and the ones that aren't are decent anyways.

Edit: Most of these bands are fairly mainstream by the way, shouldn't be too hard to find in your local Target or whatnot if you can't steal them.

Tool, A Perfect Circle, Portishead, Radiohead, Massive Attack, Sneaker Pimps, Razed in Black, Amon Tobin, maybe some Aphex Twin. I'd offer some others but trying to keep in the realm of NIN, sort of. A few of those vary pretty widely from it, like Radiohead, but I just think that's good music!

Ok, thanks for all the suggestions so far. I've been doing a lot of sampling the last 24 hours or so. And didn't mean to step on any toes re: INXS and Duran Duran- those were just the first things that came to mind when trying to think of really crappy 80's music. Not even sure if INXS was around in the 80's or not, but anyway...

Some of the stuff I've sampled so far-

Portishead. I actually remember a couple of the songs I heard- they've been around for awhile, iirc. I liked it quite a bit.

DJ Tiesto- I didn't get the "Just Be" album, as I didn't want to take the time to install new software just now, but I did sample a few others. I didn't recognize the name, but I do like trance so it was cool. I have a couple of early trance [] control tunes around here on a disk somewhere. I listened to "Lord of Trance" and a couple of others and liked it a lot.

Flaw was ok. "Best I Am" was good, but in the half dozen or so other songs I listened to, it just seemed fairly generic- as in, you could pretty much swap the lyrics and the music around between different songs and get about the same thing. Probably just my novice ear but they all sounded pretty similar. I heard a lot of music yesterday, though, so I ~will~ keep listening to them to see if my opinion changes.

Didn't care for Killswitch Engage as much. I liked their "End of Heartache" enough to download a couple others, but I don't really care for singers that scream. I'm getting old, I think. In Flames was a little better, but still got screamed at. Same with Shadows Fall.

I really liked Cold, Audioslave, and Tool. Audioslave was the only one I'd heard of before, so yeah, I guess I was pretty far under that rock to have not heard of Tool! But, I knew I had been so I'm glad you mentioned them.

I very much liked Massive Attack and Sneaker Pimps. I couldn't get any Amon Tobin, but I'll try again later. A Perfect Circle was good too. Haven't tried the rest of your suggestions yet, Dregor, but I will, and so far so good.

A couple of others that I discoverd and liked were Godsmack and Fuel.
