Hurricane Charley

Post by Lynks »

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WEATHER/08/12/storms/index.html
"We expect to have a Category 2 -- perhaps a Category 3 -- hurricane at landfall," said hurricane center forecaster Ed Rappaport.

Charley would reach Category 3 status at 111 mph (178 kph). Hurricanes are ranked 1 to 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale measuring hurricane strength.
I hope the people living in that area are/will be alright. You are in for a few rough days.

Also, is anyone leaving the area?

I live in Fort Myers.

The good news is that the weather service is telling us that we shouldn't get more than Tropical Storm level winds.

The bad news is that we will have sustained winds for like 6-8 hours at least and we are going to get more rain that California has seen in the last 200 years in that time. :P

I'm in a zone A section of Tampa.. but I'm not leaving. I mean, they don't have VV access in shelters and a guy has to have his priorities.

btw - I believe it's already cat 3. Depending on how the warm water north of Cuba interracts, it could potentially be cat 4 or worst case cat 5 (not likely). The traffic today has been horrid.. the good thing is no work tomorrow (or school). Their predicting ~15+ foot swells and 100+ mph winds. Should be a good time!

The kind of scary thing was hearing them talk about how if it were a 'worst case' scenario and turned into a slow moving cat 5 (the potential is there, but it's not likely) it would supposedly cause permanent land changes in this area and turn what's currently a solid land section into two islands. Freaky.

Really cool pictures at this site:

STRONGER WINDS... WITH GUSTS OVER 100 MPH WILL APPROACH ORLANDO AND KISSIMMEE FROM THE SOUTHWEST BETWEEN 700 AND 800 PM. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS REPORTED SIGNIFICANT WIND DAMAGE IN DE SOTO AND HARDEE COUNTIES AS THE CENTER PASSED THROUGH THIS REGION.

ALL RESIDENTS SHOULD COMPLETE ANY LAST MINUTE PREPARATIONS NOW AND REMAIN INDOORS. THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION... DO NOT TAKE CHANCES.

Betcha 1000 VV's! You won't get the eye, but you are about to get hit pretty damn hard

Edit: having grown up dealing with hurricanes I know they are no laughing matter, but if you get the eye, go outside, walk around for a few minutes, it's about the oddest sensation I have ever felt...it feels like you are walking around in a Steven King book... it feels wrong on so many levels and cool as fuck

Hurricane season in Florida is like the fucking homeland security color chart bullshit.

We are constantly on elevated or 'Prepare to die' but with all the warnings, it just rolls off, and Charlie just reinforced that.

People are already bitching about Charlie's 'premature evacuation'.

Yea, I know if it HAD follow its plot my place would go from a third floor to a first floor waterfront property, but having lived through these for twenty years, the buildup is just annoying. Whether it is the run on grocery stores or gas stations, the traffic, the fact that I can't find anything good on TV, or power flickering, it's just annoying.

We couldn't even get a good hurricane party going since the surf was pathetic here.

Well obviously it's easy to predict a course of action after the hurricane has made landfall and you can see what it's doing.

Predicting the weather isn't a perfect sceince you know. So I guess, what, they just shouldn't bother to announce hurricanes anymore?
Asked if he felt all the precautions were a waste, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker said absolutely not.

"It would be a mistake to take that perspective," he said. "All you have to do is look at Fort Myers. That very easily could have been us. You have to prepare for the worst."
A man who left his house to smoke a cigarette died when a tree fell on him in Fort Myers, AP said.
Further proof that smoking kills.

Yea I know, that is why I spent three hours preparing my place, storing items, stocking up etc, and then I evacuated one hour north.

I'm not a dumbass, just cranky about spending the better part of two days for nothing more than a mild rainstorm.

You know Xzion, I will give you half slack, because to be honest my first thought when i heard that the deaths were in a trailor park was "Damn stupid people, what they hell do they think...Their aluminum trailor is hurricane proof?"

Then I felt bad.

Then I realized that I should not feel bad, because it is Darwin award time when you are stupid enough to do that.

I live in Fort Myers. Across the bridge in Cape Coral at most of my friends' houses, the area looks like the proverbial disaster site. We got very lucky; our power was done from 3:40pm Friday at which point the hurricane was 20 miles away hovering over the Barrier Islands (Sanibel, Captiva, Matlechay, Pine Island, etc).

We got power back about an hour ago at roughly 4pm.

Most of Lee and Charlotte County have no power, or are coming online now (very few of us).

Punta Gorda, and Port Charlotte are a fucking nightmare. It turns out that Charlotte Harbour is the only body of water inland that is large enough to continue to feed a hurricane. When it stalled on the coast (thereby staying on my doorstep for an extra hour!), it made its way to Charlotte Harbour to find the only way inland that would not knock it out of Category 4 immediately.

Jesus fuck christ that was a bitch of a storm. First direct hit central florida took in 60 years. At first it was predicted to hit north of Orlando (where I live), then a few hours before impact they said it would hit orlando dead on.

I wethered the storm in my grandparents' house. We lost power at about 7pm on the night of the storm. If you have never been in a Hurricane, its fucking scary. The storm finally settled down at around 10pm. The next morning, Apparantly a tornado passed directly over us over the night. Everywhere you look there was downed trees, but you could see a clear line of destruction.

We went to my house to look at the damage. Power was out nearly everywhere. Roads were blocked because of trees. Since we left early there was little traffic. Streetlights were either powerless or on the ground, so far the government has said there has been nearly twice as much accidents as normal. Powerlines were knocked down all over the place.

At my house, it had suprisingly little damage. A huge tree in our yard had its top knocked off. The small stairset to my house was knocked 10 feet away. Damn thing was screwed to the house. A skirt on the front of the house was completly messed up. A small section of the roof was damage but it's a minor concern. A huge tree in the front yard of the person behind us fell down, completly blocking the driveway to our neighbor to the right. Inside, there was no power. Since we used a well that needs electricity to work, there was no water either. Other then that everything was fine.

We did some yard work to start clearing up the lawn. That night we were about to goto sleep when we heard that my grandparents have light, so we bolted over there. That night they didnt have their internet working so I couldnt do anything online. This morning we went back to do some more yard work, after that well now im here.

Last numbers Ive heard so far was 1.3 million people without power. They expect to get power back in at least a week. 15 people confirmed dead. No idea how many injured. Damage is estimated to be in the billions. Hurricane Andrew hit Florida a couple years back, it caused 29 billion dollars worth of damage and is the most expensive natural disaster in the US to date. So Im predicting at least 15 billion dollars worth here. All in all, Im just happy to be alive.

All of Dean was knocked dead during the storm sion, they are still there now up and down that road, tons of shit broken.

Apparantly there were 2 tornados or so, one went down goldenrod and im guessing the 2nd headed your way.

My neighboorhood just got power back tonight (monday night). Sion u shoulda seen your old house, that big tree that coverd the driveway and garage was knocked down and blown away, that tree was massive too. All the trees in my 'hood have the grass dug up like a rug, trees and lines down, all that stuff

I give this hurricane an 8.5 out of 10 for scaring off all the redneck tourists and 2 days off work.

Unfortunatly true

You should have seen the lines at the gas stations today, oh my god. I was lucky and got in a line of 3 cars , but when i saw other stations, the line didnt end, or it mixed into traffic so u couldnt tell where a line ended.

In the northern parts of Florida they are residents. Here in the keys, we call them "tourists that don't fucking tip." Give me fags, bikers, and weirdos any day of the week.

There are people who LIVE in Florida? WTF?

It's hard to have sympathy for people in Florida. You've got to be an idiot not to realize that you are almost assured to be hit by a powerful hurricane once every 10 years no matter where you live in the state. Out of all the possible natural disasters, Florida is the hads down sure bet that you will be screwed by mother nature.

No aid for you!

I'd much rather deal with the occassional hurricane (first one directly in our area in 60 years or something?) than the common earthquakes or tornados. Give me rain and wind over those any day.
