Probs deleting a mislabled file extension file

This problem has been bugging me for a bit. Long story short I accidentally renamed a .nrg file to filename.nnn.exe. Don't laugh Winnow ;) Anyway, Windows thinks of it now as an application, which it isn't. Everytime I try to delete the old file it gives me the error:

Cannot delete filename.nnn: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that are using the file and try again.

I shut down every program in the task list down and it still won't let me delete it. I can't rename it either, it gives me the same error as before.

Call me retarded, but any ideas? Help!

I'm going to assume that you are running a Windows based OS, if not, you are on your own.

Try opening a command window (Start, Run, type cmd hit enter) and deleting the file from there.

If that doesn't work, boot to a DOS disk, or a Win98 startup disk, and deleting from there.

Hope that helps.

Well, I tried that earlier from a dos prompt and it wouldn't do it.

Very strange, it worked that time.

*cue Twilight zone music*

Thanks for the help Kargyle :)

Waran,

You are going to need to boot up in safe mode. Reboot, hit F5 before the Windows screen comes up. It should bring you to a set of choices. Pick Safe Mode. Let it log in and then try to delete it.

Hehe did that as well, but it still wouldn't delete in safe mode.

For some strange reason it let me delete it in a dos prompt the second time I tried it.

Thanks for the suggestion though! :)
