08.09.04 - On Monday, Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith made the following statement to the media regarding contract negotiations with Philip Rivers:

“We have an update on the Philip Rivers negotiations. Negotiations have broken down. Prior to the training camp report date we made an effort to get Philip signed. Also, during the past week, we exchanged ideas and could not come to an agreement. On Friday, we offered a great deal to Philip. We also notified both Philip and his agent, Jimmy Sexton, that the offer will stand until 5 p.m. Sunday evening and if not accepted, the offer will be pulled off the table. Our offer was rejected. We also informed them that the package we talked about and offered will now only go down in value.

The offer we made to Philip is not a slot offer at No. 4, but in fact, an offer that exceeds No. 2 Robert Gallery and No. 3 Larry Fitzgerald. We believe it’s a great offer. Jimmy Sexton has been informed several times that the Manning-Condon deal with the New York Giants was of no concern to us before, no concern now or will it be in the future. This is very unfortunate and disappointing, but it is what it is.

It’s now time to concentrate on the players we have here and get ready for our preseason games and gear our efforts to get ready for the opener against Houston. From this time forward I will not talk about the Philip Rivers contract situation anymore. I hope I’ve made our position very clear. If he decides to sign a contract with the San Diego Chargers, then I’ll be more than happy to talk about Philip Rivers.

Dean Spanos supports this decision 100 percent.”

Of course then there is Rivers' agent claiming it was not that good, Rivers getting on a plane to go home etc..

Rivers is an idiot. He could have easily gone lower in the draft if not for the freakish Eli Manning situation.

He should take that offer and be happy.

How about some of these morons like Rivers and Winslow actually accomplish something at this level, then worry about the serious cash. The money offered was more then fair.

If you think you deserve more then prove it. Otherwise sign your contracts, get to work and shut the hell up.

dont' compare Winslow to Rivers. Winslow was an idiot to turn down that contract, but he is a very safe bet to succeed at the NFL level. As long as he can keep his head out of his ass anyways, which may not be very long.

Kellen Winslow looks like a TE, but he plays like a little bitch. If he doesn't get his ass into camp, he's gonna get knocked the fuck out going over the middle. NFL linebackers hit harder than he's ever imagined possible.

Rivers is pretty fucked. If he thinks another team will offer him more than the Chargers after he sits on his ass for a season, he's smoking the same quality rock as "Teh Warrior."

I don't think people should be so quick to jump on Rivers here. The Chargers have the worst run front office in football, and every year they have trouble signing their draft picks.
Reports coming from Rivers' camp are stating that yes, the contract offer, including $9 million in incentives, would make him higher paid than the 2nd and 3rd pick in the draft. What the Chargers aren't telling you is that some of the benchmarks required to trigger those incentives are pretty ridiculous, for instance, taking the Chargers to consecutive super bowls will trigger a several million dollar incentive.
Fuck that noise, I don't blame him for leaving that offer on the table.

If Rivers is so concerned about the organization, instead of looking for the fattest contract he can get, maybe he should try for a nice short one? No? Gee, maybe because that would actually require him to prove himself in the NFL for a couple years before the big payday, instead of being able to Ricky Williams it when this contract is up.

$5 million bonus if Rivers leads the team to FOUR Super Bowl appearances AND appears in FOUR Pro Bowls in his FIRST four years as a Charger.

I'm willing to reduce the number of Pro Bowls to three in four years if he agrees to add a 5th straight Superbowl to the agreement!

It is going to be another lackluster year but at least tickets will be cheap.

Kellen Winslow is already the highest paid tight end in the league without catching a single pass in his first preseason game.

You guys whine about player contracts like you haven't seen this last year, or the year before, or the year before that =P

All professional sports contracts do is grow year after year. It's frickin ridiculous. Basically, the next year, peple see what players are making this year, and want to one-up them. It's a never ending viscious cycle that will never end...

If you want to whine about something, how about Alex Rodrigues being paid 200+ MILLION dollars to play baseball. Seriously, football players make the least money out of all professional sports. If Winslow gets a better contract through a holdout, more power to him. It's not like he decided to do this himself; his asshole agent Poston is the guy responsible for his holdout. If you have actually ever seen Winslow in action, you would know that he is worth a large contract. If you think T. Gonzalez is athletic for a Tight End, you should see Winslow. The guy can MOVE, and he's probably a better blocker than Gonzalez, who is not known for his blocking ability.

Winslow has potential to be good, but he has proven nothing at the NFL level. And his attitude needs a serious adjustment. As I said, I can't wait until Ray Lewis introduces the "warrior" to the NFL.

Actually, according to Brown's players and coaches who know Winslow, he has a pretty good attitude. He has an incredible work ethic, and has been quoted as wanting to get the business side over with asap so he could start practicing with his team. Maybe it's just hogwash to make himself look good, perhaps. But yeah, he hasn't proven diddly at the NFL level and certainly doesn't deserve to be the highest paid TE. Gonzalez or Heap should deserve that status.

Might very well be true.. this is basically what Browns fans in the area here feel. They love having him here because of his potential, they seem to hate his attitude.. like that interview he did at Miami about being a warrior at war killing people.. Made me want to smack him!

I find it funny that LT2 is going to become the highest paid running back in the NFL. He definately deserves it and Rivers still isn't signed. I think they just let him know how much they really care about him.

Did anybody see Winslow get laid out in that game versus the Titans? Rather than take it like a man he pushes the Titans safety like 2 plays later. Rather humorous.

The details I heard are for around 51 million with 15 guaranteed and the rest in easily made terms. Since this is the Chargers we are talking about, that probably means no back to back Super Bowl wins. Hell, even an appearance at the Super Bowl would probably be off the negotiating table.
