Adventures in a liquor store....

Post by Aevian Dreaklear »

So today I had some time to kill after work and decide to go to a liquor store. I had turned 21 just this past week so I decide it's about time I go buy some booze legally. During the past few years I have done either beer or the clear alcohols like vodka, gin, or everclear.

Anyhoo I started looking at the darker alcohols today and realized I don't know a damn thing. Recently I have started enjoying having cigars. So basically I'm looking for recommendations for anything that goes well with a smoke.

If you are bored, an explanation of what courvasier (sp?), whiskey, bourbon, scotch, and brandy are would be great too. Of course I could go out and buy some of each but I am flat dead broke. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I know I could google all of this but I much rather read the opinions of people posting rather than reading informative websites.

Out of the dark stuff I like cognac and chambord barely heated or the single barrel Jack or the Captain Morgan's Private Reserve spiced rum.

Sadly Aev, the good darker stuff is all pricey as fuck. A nice bottle of Laphroig will introduce you to the wonderful world of cigars and single malts, they were meant for each other! It won't come cheap, but honestly the difference between the 10 and 12 year old is minimal (unlike the difference of the 15 year old) so go out, spend a few coins, get a bottle and a decent cigar (can I suggest a Partagas Almirante? :P)

Ok what the hell is Laphoig? As in what kind of liquor is that? Also how much is the cigar you recommended? I've left the world of gas station cigars but usually only spend $5 on a cigar at a tobacco store.

Laphroaig is a single malt scotch. It's not exactly a 'starter' malt - it's one of the smokier, peatier malts out there. That being said, I love it and would happily make love to it for hours and hours. I might suggest a less complex, less powerful malt to start with and go from there: Balvenie, Glenlivet, Glenkinchie or a Oban.

BAH, I wanted to take the gnome from 0-160 in 2 seconds, even if you are probably right. It is imo the smoothest of the peaty scotches but I really do think it lends itself to a cigar better then any other single malt. Ohhh and Aev, I pay 5.40 for that same cigar.

Single malt scotches and good cigars are just the most relaxing decadence one can have. I used to love a bit of Glenlivet with a good La Gloria Wavell.

Akanae smokes stogies while sipping madori sours in a room full of cats. I've tried scotch once, didn't much like it. Maybe I should "force" myself to like it and be cool like Pherralic. :) Haven't gone wrong with a recipe he has given me yet.

Of those scotch's listed, Oban would probably be my recommendation for a beginner. It's nice and smooth, though all scotch definitely takes a bit to get used to. Hell, you could even start with a blend, particularly if you are operating on a budget. Dewar's worked well for me at the beginning.

You probably don't want to start off drinking it neat, give it a splash of water or add an ice cube or two to get rid of a little of the bite and just leave the delicious scotch flavor.

My current favorite is Bowmore 17 year.

Prefer to relax w/ after dinner cordials myself, especially amaretto in a snifter.

If you are taking cigar smoke into your lungs, then you are much more manly than I. I take bigger bong hits than any of my friends, but cigar smoke is... THICK.

This is an older thread, I know, but I just wanted to say that I am shocked that nobody here mentioned port or bourbon!

Scotch is nice, yes, but can break the bank - especially for a 21 year old. You can buy a really nice bourbon for a fraction of the cost. I know that most tried and true scotch fans would bludgeon me about the head and shoulders for the mere suggestion of bourbon, but Knob Creek is nice, and if it's too strong for you, it's not heresy to mix it with a little Coke.

I might also suggest looking into a good port wine, though - like scotch - that can also get a bit steep of wallet.
