In a stunning move that likely pushes 17-year veteran Vinny Testaverde to the top of the team's depth chart, the Dallas Cowboys released Quincy Carter, the starting quarterback for much of the last three seasons, on Wednesday.




Carter left the Cowboys' training camp in Oxnard, Calf., early Wednesday. Sources who confirmed the roster move, which came with no advance warning, could not provide a reason for the decision, or declined to. The release of Carter is expected to be official later Wednesday afternoon and addressed by coach Bill Parcells at his daily press briefing between practices. Owner Jerry Jones has confirmed the move.


A three-year veteran, Carter had started 31 games in his career, including all 16 in 2003, when he led Dallas to a 10-6 record and a wild card spot, the first postseason appearance by the team since 1999. The former University of Georgia standout was a second-round pick in the 2001 draft.


Carter's career has been a roller coaster, with flashes of brilliance often followed by very uneven performances. Just days ago, when asked about his starter for this season, Parcells acknowledged that Carter had "a leg up" on the No. 1 job.


What changed that, at least for now, is unknown.


In his three NFL seasons, Carter completed 507 of 902 passes for 5,839 yards, with 29 touchdown passes, 36 interceptions and a passer rating of 70.0. He threw for 3,302 yards last season, his best year in the league.


Testaverde, 40, was signed by the Cowboys in the spring after the New York Jets released him for salary cap reasons. Testaverde played for Parcells in New York and, even before the Jets freed him, it was obvious he was headed to Dallas for a reunion with the coach.


The 17-year veteran has completed 3,334 of 5,925 passes for 40,943 yards, and he has 251 touchdown passes and 235 interceptions.


The other two quarterbacks on the roster are rookie Drew Henson, the former Michigan star who in February abandoned his pursuit of a baseball career with the New York Yankees to return to football, and second-year pro Tony Romo.

Carter's big problem as far as Parcells is concerned is the INTs.
He was just too erratic when it came to giving up the ball.
Parcells is a possesion grind out the game kind of coach and giving up the ball drives him nuts.

You're talking about two-time Superbowl MVP Tom Brady, right?

Cowboys will be a 8-8 team this year at best. They have a decent defense but their offense is in the shitter. I know some of you think Eddie George is the answer but not me.

Over the hill RB, over the hill QB = Cowboys are lucky the Cardinals aren't still in the NFC East or they'd probably place below them this year.

Yea cause an over the hill RB, and a QB who hasn't even gotten to the bottom of the hill is much better . Honestly Vinny will be fine at QB for this year, losing Quincy hurts because he was getting better, but as a stop gap Vinny isn't a terrible option. The defense is a lot better than decent and hopefully with less turnovers and a consistent if not outstanding running game the Cowboys can pull off a 9-7 or 10-6 season again. If Arizona was still in the East they would end up in the same place they've ended up a majority of their existence, last place .

Winnow you are right, they are 8-8 at best. I think this is Parcel's covering his ass, and having an "out" for that lack of success. Carter is not that great, but he is way better than a washed up Vinny Testaverde.

I would agree that this gives Bill an 'out' for a failed season. With Philly (yay!) and Washington making moves to improve, Dallas was going to have a tough go of it this year.

Not that I'm a huge fan, but you could do a lot worse then Testeverde as your starting QB. He's a great mentor for the younger players (see: Chad Hutchinson), and the guy did step in for 7 games last year, completing over 60% of his passes for almost 1400 yards.
Those aren't pro-bowl numbers, but with E. George and a tough defense, I can see them winning 9 or 10 games this season.
Although with the improvements in Philly and Washington (Gibbs for President!), that might not be good enough to get them in the playoffs....

Given the simplicity of the offenses that Parcells installs, count on Henson seeing significant playing time before mid-season. Vinny is the perfect guy for this situation: he can run the show, but is old and experienced enough to both accept being a backup and mentoring the new kid.

From an unbiased view, my guess is it will be the Patriots vs Seahawks in the Superbowl this year. (now remember, last year I picked the Seahawks and another NFC team to be in the superbowl : ) hehe. This year I have the Seahawks in the right conference! The Colts may sneak by the Patriots though if the league does actually enforce the 5 yard contact rule this year with WR/DBs.

The Cardinals will be the Bengals of last year. Our superbowl would be an 8-8 season.

Detroit is a year away from being the Bengals of last year.

If Detroit wins 3 road games this season, I will call it a success.

Three years without a road victory makes my peepee sad.
