I've got a networking question regarding a LAN network and specifically playing games across it.

I took my computer over to my friends house the other day and plugged into his router as I would anywhere else and my computer worked fine connecting to web-sites, AIM, games etc. However the trouble is when I try to play a game like War3 or C&C as a LAN game instead of on the internet. I can go to the LAN game option either my friends games don't show up or when I try hosting my games don't show up to them.

The only error message I could find when troubleshooting the networking is when I try to view the workgroup computers in the My Network Places I get a message saying "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

If anyone has any idea why it's not letting me use LAN connect games I'd really appreciate the advice =/

Sure you set it up to be on the same Workgroup as your friend? If you have a member of a different workgroup you can still access the net but wont see his computers or servers he runs on his LAN.

workgroup doesn't matter much unless you're wanting to share drives.

Make sure that both of you are setup for DHCP to be getting IP address from the router, and both on the same subnet:

255.255.255.0

IP addresses should be similar :

192.168.0.<something>
or
192.168.1.<something>

whatever they are, the first 3 values must match.

If they don't you can go to a command prompt (assuming XP) and do:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

(use "winipcfg" if you have 9x/ME and click on release/renew buttons)

If that still doesn't work, you both may have to set your IP/subnets manually.
