japanese anime

I cannot understand what the fuck anyone sees in Japanese anime. It has HORRIBLE animation and disgustingly bad dialogue/storylines. The “action” scenes in Japanese anime involve little more then two portraits of characters with there fists out slowly moving closer to each other with flashing lights in the background.
Can any anime fan on this board tell me what the fuck im missing?

Well your obviously missing the good ones.

Watch Cowboy Bebop. If after watching it you still hate it, then you are completely incompatable with the style of entertainment. Problem with anime is that 80% of it is cheap crap and some of the mediocer to good stuff is targetted at women and kids, therefor really cheesy.

Anime I have watched involves the standard shit that's shown on American TV, Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D, Violence Jack, Record of the Lodoss Wars, and some varied shit that my friends have tossed around. I didn't enjoy any of it. Can I safely say that I would not like anime in general?

I second cowboy bebop, it has the best style and music of all the anime I have seen, plus you will never seen dbz type action in it

Cowboy Bebop is good. Watch FLCL/Fooly Cooly for a different look and bizarre story as well.

anime isn't really a genre, it's an entire medium. saying you don't like anime is like saying you don't like television or books.
I find a lot of mainstream anime to be annoying and worthless. a lot of the lesser known stuff is really cool, but it's overshadowed by a bunch of lonely fansub otaku geeks who do nothing but talk about them and analyze them in a way that makes trekkers look like casual fans.

Try Black Magic M66. Short and good I think. Give you another look at anime without investing a lot of time.

Try Ghost in the Shell (the movie, might be a series too, dont know that one) or Akira (again the movie), then come back and talk to us again.

I would have to agree with everyone with regards to Cowboy Bepop, but it is a lot easier to have action with guns than it is to animate a martial arts fight. Gundam Wing is also a very good series, can't say much for the other versions of Gundam tho. Trigun is quite funny especially in the original japanese voices.

My favourites are:-
Porco Rosso - About a flying pig, set between WWI & WWII.
Space Adventure Cobra - Something of a fairytale plot set in space.
Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honneamise - Set in modern day, except
for a few quirks. Deeper plot / ideas than the first two.
And I agree, that anime isn't really a genre but a medium.

my favorite was The legend of Airslan (typo on airslan i think)
big medival war epic kind of story, really enjoyed em, all though i remember thinking the 4th was the worst of the lot, there was supposed to be a 5th, but not sure if they ever made one, after a few months of delayed deadlines i quit looking out for it.

I can't believe you think the art in anime sucks. The quality varies just as much as any other type of animation. Some of it plain sucks, and some of it will fucking blow you away. Maybe you just don't like the style of it (big eyes, small mouths, etc). I guess it's not for everyone.
Anyways, if you feel like giving it another chance I highly recommend Bebop like anyone else here. Also check out Macross Zero (it's downloadable if you look for it), Macross Plus (rentable), Spriggan (rentable), Last Exile (downloadable). Of course they're all buyable too

If you watched Ghost in the Shell the movie and found it too dry for your tastes (parts of it are for me, but I like it overall), then you probably wouldn't enjoy Akira either. Otherwise watch that, too. I'm really looking forward to Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, though I hear you pretty much have to be a fanboy to enjoy it. Also can't wait for the newest Appleseed.
I may be biased having spent a large part of my childhood in Japan, but I still recommend anime to anyone that can look beneath the surface of a good anime.
By the way, has anyone seen Gasaraki? I really want to see it, but can't find it anywhere (short of buying, and I'd rather sample it first).

As far as I can tell, Evangelion is considered to be the greatest anime ever made by the Japanese fans, but it all depends on what kind of things you like to watch. There is an anime for every kind of interest. Personally, I tend to watch the silly ones and the ones based on a love story. If I had to just pick one or two things. it would be Mononoke Hime and Spirited Away. Also I should say that its usually better to watch anime with the subtitles and the japanese audio because the japanese voice actors really bring more to the table than the crappy american voice actors.

The Heroic Legend of Arislan (later, The Heroic Legend of Arslan). I liked that years ago, if I remember correctly.

Gasaraki isn't that great... not bad but nothing special. Its pretty much an NGE clone.
I suggest downloading Samurai Champloo (from the same people who did Bebop, this will utterly annihilate Bebop's popularity however, its that good) and Tenjou Tenge, also the Hakkenden series is awesome. The new Samurai 7 (based off the Akira Kurosawa film) has potential also.
edit:
anime.mirkx.com (the new mircx.com) will get you tons of torrents for all the different anime releases.

Well, if you want Hentai, i guess i can only reccoment Legend of the Overfiend.
Nice drawings, cool story, fun movie. Although stay a LONG way from the UK release, get the US or Japan release, back in the old video days, the UK release was 90 min shorter (yes, 90 min cut out of a 4 hour movie, a dual set with Overfiend 1 and 2), and the translation was absolutely horrible.

It depends what your looking for in anime when you watch one. Hellsing is a good anime if your looking for a main character that is badass and beserk. Its more based on Vampires and stuff check it out my friend Trent says Hellsing rules

Well I guess that would depend on how you define a medium. If you feel that movies and TV are the same medium because the basic form of delivery is the same that being an audio and visual form, then you wouldn't think of anime as it's on medium. It would be the same as saying that comic books are the same as regular books since they are both print. That's just my opinion of course.
Oh and you can compare them to books and television in general since it's just a different way of telling a story, much as video games are a different medium used to tell a story. The quality is not really determined by the form in which the story is told, but by the individual product.
Now as to recommendation on anime, I would say Bebop and NGE as most people have said before. I would also add the Slayers series, I find it to be very funny and I'm a big fan of high fantasy settings. I would also recommend The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, it's really campy, but I enjoyed it a lot.

FFX is the best game ever but their Final Fantasy Unlimited Anime Series doesn't look so good.

I have to agree. I have seen Akira and other anime films/cartoons and I like the style but hate the animation. Still frames lasting several seconds with long monologues pisses me off. Recycled still frames erk me too. I guess its just not my bag. Then again I dont like Final Fantasy at all either

I don't know why you people bitch about still frames etc... its not like any other animation is any different.

Ya Stragi I get what you are saying. but when the same frame is held and repeated for a long period of time it just fucking annoys me.
Just my opinion.
