Or IPng as Steve Deering first coined it.

Just did a quick module on IPv6 today. I've done a little reading in the past, IPv6 has been slated to be the savior of the internet address pool since what? 1995 or earlier?

Anyway, I haven't read on it in-depth in years and covered it in a network design course somewhat today. It looks like the RFC's have evolved quite a bit and I understand countries like Japan are subsidizing the migration from IPv4.

Has anyone read the Ciscopress book on IPv6? Cisco Self-Study: Implementing Cisco IPv6 Networks.

I haven't but would love to if I can get a copy. I'll ask around though most people are so busy I doubt they have had time either.

The need for IPv6 was pushed WAAAAAAY back with the quick spread of many to one NAT, proxy servers, and such.

I for one, was NOT looking forward to having to fuck with those bigass addresses in hex. ATM was bad enough.

Even things like content switches have pushed back IPv6, if you can have one external IP address with 16 web servers behind it that's a lot better than round robin DNS and 16 addressable IPs (for more reasons than just saving a few addresses..)
