Linkage please?Ennia wrote:so they lifted NDA
spill it!
Edit: Ok confirmed NDA was off.
This game has absolutely no soul. It is boring on levels that I can't even begin to describe. Once you get past the character creation screen, everything else is an immense disappointment. There is no compelling reason to care about a thing in SWG. There are huge detailed environments that you can't interact with at all. There are horrible looking monsters that make EQs graphics look good (hint: EQ is a lot of things, but not good graphics by today's standards).
I cannot give a strong enough recommendation against SWG. I really don't think it's fun on ANY level. I can't imagine even the most braindead poster here picking it up and going, 'Wow! This is fun!' I wish I could say something different, and I'm sure that some of you will buy it just on the basis of my dislike for it, but I assure you I wouldn't wish SWG on even the posters I hate the most here. It's just bland and stupid and horrible. Sorry, I really did try to like this game.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Is there anything good about this game? Can they work on it at all? How about for a real Star Wars fanatic?

Well the graphics, short of the monsters are really good. The character creation stuff is a good preview of what to expect from EQ2. There are a lot of different professions you can go with spec in, but auto attack is auto attack really. I'm sure the Min-maxers will have the perfect combo figured out in a week or two.
All the posts we've seen from Rivera, Xanupox, and anyone else who was in beta and didn't like it have been entirely spot on. All the negative posts on FoH's forum were spot on.
It's a shame they wasted the 'Star Wars' name on this, but I predict that this will be the biggest flop in MMORPG history.

Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
Well I will give the info that I know, as an mmorpg loving non bias non star wars fan.
I will start with the cons.
1) Not meant for hardcore players, meant to be more casual play.
2) Although they are still tweaking it, atm money is far too hard to come by.
3) Some missions don't pay out, or bug out before completion.
4) Some skill tree's are not very balanced at all.
5) Lack of fast travel on the planet, if you go LD and your group leaves you, you get to walk back to the closest town, have fun with that cause its a long walk.
6. In battle you get battle fatigue, and it can only be removed by sitting in a cantina listening to an entertainer or a band dance/play music.
7. Although its in the star wars universe, and has imperial and rebel forces all over, I guess personally I didnt feel it was too incredibly "star warsy" when I played it.
Now the pro's.
1) Not meant for hardcore players, meant to be more casual play.
2) Great skill tree concept, I am not a big fan of cookie cutter characters.
3) IMHO Awsome graphics.
4) Huge world.
5) Player housing even on release.
6) Unique crafting system that is both rewarding and enjoyable.
7) The ability to do anything you want except for jump, unless I just missed the jump key I am pretty sure you can't jump, and when you go off of a higher ground you seem to imediatly teleport to the ground, you don't get any air. (I miss AC's jumping fun)
8) The game has skills that are known to be soloing skills, and the game has skills that are meant for groups, and its nice that its known so you don't get a lot of time invested into something THEN realize you can't solo light blues.

I have to admit I have no clue about SWG, just started to read on it this morning after I saw on Allakhazam that NDA is off and they were allowed to show off their SWG site fully.
Seeing a class (profession?) Chef made me chuckle and got me curious to find out what the heck is chef gonna do in an online game and how they'll progress a silly class like that. I mean it looks silly. Maybe it's a viable class to play full time.

And in response to Aranuil's post, I really don't think you should put someone down for enjoying something, I personally enjoy SW:G and I would recommend it, if you don't like it thats no reason to put it down. I mean I personally TRIED MY ASS OFF to enjoy planetside, but nothing I could do could make it enjoyable, I really WANTED to have fun with that game. But you seem to love it, so different strokes for different folks, I don't put you down for enjoying PS, you shouldn't put any one else down for enjoying SW:G.I can't imagine even the most braindead poster here picking it up and going, 'Wow! This is fun!'

I take exception to the Huge World thing. I ran diagonally across Naboo one night in four hours out of sheer boredom. Sure there's a lot of space, but it's all very similar, and the monsters, and random camps, ruins, etc. are lame.Rojer wrote:Now the pro's.

The reason you can't jump is because there is no Z-axis in the game. This is not a 3d world, but a 2d world, just like Doom 1 or UO.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Actually I haven't played PS for about a week, but that's beside the point. Do you even know what board you're posting on? I never said anything bad about you not liking Planetside when I was liking it. I think SWG is horrible, and want to protect as many people from it as I can.Rojer wrote:And in response to Aranuil's post, I really don't think you should put someone down for enjoying something, I personally enjoy SW:G and I would recommend it, if you don't like it thats no reason to put it down. I've been in SWG Beta since early Beta 2. I have attempted to play it with vigor on 3 separate occassions, and there's just nothing there to hold my interest for $15 per month. I can afford it np, but it's frighteningly boring. I think SWG might end up being liked by the roleplayahs, but I just don't see how it can hold anyone's interest long enough to be successful.

Are you crazy? There are horrible looking monsters that make EQs graphics look good
One of the best things about the game is the detail they put into the monsters. The wildlife and mobs are extremely varied from planet to planet.
I think most people are getting hung up on comparing SWG to other MMOGs like EQ, AO or even DAoC. Virtually all of the popular MMOGs have revolved around combat and leveling up.
Combat is not a major part of SWG. You can be 'successful' in SWG without ever engaging in combat... ever.
Combat in SWG is incredibly dull... especially at lower skill.
Higher up the skill trees, combat professions get special attacks, stances and defenses. It's a little flavor but combat is still essentially boring.
The economy is 100% player based.
The only mentionable loot that mobs drop are garbage weapons (worse than your noob pistol), an occasional piece of clothing and money.
If you have scouting skills, you can 'harvest' items like bones, hides and meat from corpses which can be used in tradeskills.
I didn't get much time in beta to explore many professions but there is a shitload of variety in the skill trees.
I went into beta not expecting much.
There was a few weeks where the servers seemed to be going down constantly and I gave up on it. I logged back in last week and it was like playing a totally different game.
I won't be playing SWG.
I don't have the time to commit to playing 2 MMOGs.
They took a big risk in trying very hard to make SWG different from other MMOGs. It's a totally different type of gameplay and those who are more accustomed to games like EQ will probably find it pretty damn boring.
SOE is trying to broaden the appeal of MMOGs.
If they made an EQ clone in a Star Wars wrapper, they would be stealing their own customers from themselves. It's not sound business practice to compete with yourself.
I've got 99 problems and I'm not dealing with any of them - Lay-Z
All Aranuil is trying to do is save someone $50 for the game and $15 dollars for the first month. But hell if you have $65 to throw around get the game and see for yourself. I for one appreciate the info I am glad that the hype of the game didnt get me.Aranuil wrote:Actually I haven't played PS for about a week, but that's beside the point. Enlighten me. Let me rephrase it though I think my wording might have been misleading. You can change your x and y coordinates in the game, but you cannot be at two separate z coordinates that share the same x and y coordinates. You cant jump, or fall, or dive. People complain that you can run straight up the side of steep cliffs, although slowly. They did this so their fractal-generated terrain wouldnt create pits that players would get stuck in. Let me know if that doesn't make sense.miir wrote:Do you have any idea how stupid that statement sounds. The reason you can't jump is because there is no Z-axis in the game. I didn't like the look of any of the monsters. I didn't like the 'spawn nest' (or whatever the term they were using was) bullshit. I thought the monsters in AO looked better actually, and I also though that the landscape in AO looked just as good.
I HATE the combat system. Hate it with a passion. When I was playing, you'd essentially go outside of town, crouch for better accuracy, then fire on a single mob. 7 of them would come at you, while you still crouched, were dogpiled by a bunch of monsters. You'd rotate around until they were all dead and then it would be over.
Call it UO2 with a Star Wars skin if you like, but I didn't like it at all.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
I do not mind if Aranuil rips SW:G a new asshole, opinions are awsome, thats not my point, my only point is that its dumb to call the person that posts that he/she is enjoying SW:G a "braindead poster ".All Aranuil is trying to do is save someone $50 for the game and $15 dollars for the first month. Actually, you're reading it backward. I'm not saying that if you like SWG you're braindead, I'm saying that even the most braindead person here wouldn't find it fun.
I'm saying the person starts out as braindead, not that they are braindead for liking SWG. Think Pottamina, and you'll have a better idea of what I'm trying to say...

i think that about covers it.

I love Star Wars. I have read most all of the books, own all of the movies. I am a HUGE fan of the entire SW franchise.
I agree with Aranuil. The game is a total waste of developer time and resources, and a big waste of online space. Those servers would be better utilized donated to the SETI project IMO. Combat sucks, tradeskills are boring, everything takes way too much time in the game.
I can sum SWG up in 1 simple word : AWFUL.
