ok this can go on ad naseum, but the point is that the choice of coin denomination seriously effects the change you get for any amount between 0.01 and 0.99. The use of a one pount coin in the UK has become standard after they tried to use a paper note but found it had the same problems that the US is having with wear/tear.

The British notes increase in size based on monetary value and each has a distinctive colouring. The reasoning is that people who have problems with their sight are still able to distinguish one note from another by touch/size.

In summary, they did a good job thinking about their currency in modern terms.

In my time in UK, France, and Holland, did I come to prefer their currencies? Yes, I found them more practical and I have very little sentimental attachment to American money as I try not to hold on to it for very long.


The thing I really learned is that the cashless society is the way forward. In France, you have been able to pay for everything with your debit card for many years now and once I got used to that it was damned annoying to reaclimate to the having to carry money around as you do in some places in the US. Buying a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper and something drink in cash is stupid and just results in my car collecting more coins that fall out of my pocket once I get back in.

I think investing in modernizing the American bills are a good idea, but I would hope that their use will be minimalised in the US as most people use debit and/or credit cards.

If you use 50% more types of coins it would only make sence that you have more combo abilities, it doesn't prove they are intelligent it just proves they spend more cash making coin molds then we do.

The end result is the same....0.52 or 0.27...

True it will mean someone hands you more coins...it will also mean you hand out more coins. So at the end of the day of shopping your about tied for coins in your pocket.

But here is the funny thing, guys will never use coins...we don't have purses....it will always end up in the change dish on our nightstand.

I remember where one point in my life I would literally just walk out of the store and toss the change in the trash....or sometimes on the sidewalk if I thought it was acceptable (little kids like change, store owners don't like dirty sidewalks).

The fact is that unless you work for the Federal Reserve, the National Treasury, or know someone in one of those two organizations, then you have no idea what kind of crap they have to deal with on both a national and international level with counterfitting. Also you have no idea now much money it costs to make dollar bills and pennies that frankly A. dollar coins last longer and B. pennies are useless. So again unless you understand the facts of the matter, don't fucking rag on the fact that they are adding color to the bills. It's like all the fuckers that made fun of the money when it was changed a few years ago, calling it Monopoly money and shit.

I doubt 5% of you know that the Federal Reserve isn't even technically a branch of the Government? That Federal Reserve employees aren't goverment employees and not paid by our tax dollars. They are technically a private organization that prints money technically for "banks" and that currency is recognized at a national level by the government. It's actually a lot more complicated than that, but unless you want this post to be several pages long thats' the nutshell. They also sell electronic money services to banks such as automated systems for wire transfers and such as well as check processing. They also helped a lot of banks get through Y2K and sold their programming services to get those banks up to speed. They are a corporation just like any other corporation. They have to watch their own private budget and manage their own cash flow (ironic since they make the money). Yes they work with the goverment on catching counterfitters but the most of it is from banks catching counterfits and tracking down the source.

Also every single little thing the Federal Reserve does effects the economy. For example the stock market is GARUNTEED to change in some way whever Greenspan announces that he is or even isn't changing the intrest rate. Because of the drastic changes the Fed can potentially make on the economy, they make sure that anything and everything they do is properly researched and planned before making changes.

So again unless you understand the facts about currency, don't rag on it. If you don't like the American dollar, then move some place else.

While not widely used, america does have a 50 cent coin. I do agree a 2 cent coin might cut down on a lot of crap though.

If you don't add taxes to a purchase price at the register, it would be relatively easy to take everything under 10 or 25 cents out of common usage. I'm not sure why we don't include taxes as part of a purchase price in the US, I've been other places that did it and it worked pretty well.

Singapore has the coolest bills I've seen, lots of colors, well done art.

I've never understood why people are confused by/don't like the $1 coins, I really like them.

No, it's because having a quatrillion coins on you at all times can be a real pain in the ass. Dollar coins seem cool at first, but when you deal with them every day, they start to suck. Plus, having $1 and $2 denominations available only in coins means that they can require you to pay for even more stuff in coins only. Much h8 for the train ticket machines that make you pay $4 for a ticket but only let you pay in coins. It reminds me of when I'd hoarde quarters in college for the laundromat, but now it's even worse, because if I want to be prepared for something that requires coins, it's entire dollars that I have to squirrel away. Of course, I hardly ever have cash on me in any form, so usually when I need cash, I have to use my hoarded $1 and $2 coins. So much h8...
