Well that's the thing about YouTube videos. They aren't from gaming sites. Each one has a code so unless they watch all the videos, it just shows as being from YouTube.
Which one's the WoW video and which is a product review without clicking? Since YouTube is banned, you wouldn't be pulling any info from the servers and a bunch of tech sites/news sites have YouTube embedded in them.
Is Gizmodo a banned site for you? (can't remember if you answered that) or are only the YuoTube videos blocked on that site?

Yes, they use Websense. Also, this is the third time he has brought it up. The thread I linked to was the second.
Oh, and YOUTUBE is blocked due to being STREAMING VIDEO. It doesn't matter what the fucking content is. I also get Access Denied on parts of CNN.com and Goltv.tv. As in, ENTIRE PORTIONS OF THE SCREEN ARE COVERED IN BIG RED LETTERS!

Winnow, just give up. Regardless of whether you're right or not (you're not), most people will err on the side of caution when it comes to their employment. I don't blame them... Not everyone can completely circumvent IT security like I can.
We can do nothing as Aslanna said, or we can look into the solutions I outlined above. Your argument is dead.

Uh what?
Here is what booghaz has said: Thottbot was banned from his work. A website was banned. When asked why this website was banned, they were told it was banned because it made too many calls to Thottbot, a site which is banned.
Here's the situation booghaz is trying to avoid: Youtube is banned from his work. Veeshanvault is a website Boog likes to view while at work. If we allow embedded videos, Veeshanvault will make calls to Youtubes server. As illustrated in the case above, this could very well cause VV to get banned.
Do you understand?
Oh, and Gizmodo might work, but it working only proves that it hasn't been banned yet, not that sites linking youtube videos do not get banned. Maybe people at his work do not view Gizmodo. I don't think it's worth the risk to have Booghaz's work ban VV.

Exactly my point. Streaming video is everywhere so getting youTube hits isn't a surprising thing. Your IT department has blocked all streaming video but that doesn't mean they don't expect to get lots of hits on streaming video sources simply because it's all over the internet now.

My argument isn't dead but I understand it's not going to happen. I was more interested in the logic behind the argument.
Web paranoia is rampant. If Booger said the IT department shocked his testicles each time there was an attempted access to an embedded video source, people here would believe it. Tons of shit flowing through a WoW Fan Site server is different than blocked YouTube hits from the largest multipurpose video server on the net.
Isn't Websense smart enough to analyze links within an accessed page to flag a site for further analysis? I don't see references on the net for websites or employees being banned due to embedded videos so I'd assume their threat to job security is on the same level as all of those images you see blocked due to being from banned sites. (not the ones blocked by the site to prevent hot linking)

With this embedding issue, it's a matter of caution level, not being selfish, as embedded YouTube videos make life easier (the same as embedded images do), especially on a thread with multiple links to videos.

My company sells a product called the OmniAccess SafeGuard that performs a variety of functions. In it's simplest forms, it's a NAC (network access control) device. It promiscuously sniffs Kerberos, Radius and LDAP authentication or it can do captive portal. It can do user role extraction from LDAP queries and Active Directory attributes. It does host integrity, IDP (intrusion-detection/prevention) anomaly and definition based detection. It can quarantine users. It can monitor EXACTLY what application a user is using, and with the reporting functionality, it can see everything a given user has done on the network including what they typed in their email, and what they typed in an IM client in it's historical data. It's all tied to the user and their credentials.
The other really glorious thing it does is capture and dynamically mirror SSH traffic, or block it altogether no matter what port you're tunneling it through. The days of tunneling your traffic out of your office are coming to an end.
I'll say it again, the tools IT staffs have are getting better, not worse. The motivation to lock shit down is getting greater, not smaller. Why? Security for one reason. Each non-work related site an employee goes to is an opportunity for a user to be a victim of social engineering, or to download trojans/virii/worms, etc. Efficiency for another. Most workplaces don't pay their users to check their stock portfolio, read the news, or check their personal email. It's a pretty valid argument for an employer to make whether you like it or not. Of course, you as an employee have the ability to quit your job, but that's not really a great solution to the problem.
The other thing Winnow said that I found funny. Just go out and get an iPhone. Besides all the obvious reasons why that's a laughable solution, a lot of the higher security places of business are blocking cell signals these days. It's not everywhere, and more often than not, the average person isn't going to run into something like that, but as concerns for privacy get greater, and these devices get less and less expensive, expect to see it more, especially places where confidentiality and privacy are concerns.

Perhaps quote the whole statement:
Due to this reason, I called you a selfish prick, and I stand by that statement (obviously with regard to just this issue)
Not sure if this was clear to you or not but I like you Winnow. You single handedly got me interested in comic books, you keep areas of the site alive that wouldn't be otherwise, and you generally actually give thought to what you post, as well as being helpful when people ask questions. I would never say that in regards to this board, you are selfish. Just every once in awhile, you go on these crusades: unbanning cart, coaches wearing suits, Arizona teams, and now this.

Uh, how does clicking a video to start a clip instead of clicking a link that opens and auto starts a video make life any easier?
Personally, I'm glad we don't have embedded videos for one reason: When you click the view first unread post button, it takes you to the newest post you haven't read, but if the thread has embedded images, they take a minute to load, and totally screw up where the button took you. There are some threads where there are so many images, I can't stand to look at them because it readjusts the damn scroll bar for 2 minutes. I assume embedded youtubes would also do this, since it's just loading an image.

Oh god do I hate this... It has nothing to do with YouTube, but yeah... wow... the way it determines how tall the page is (without the images) and then continually goes to that place, kills me. You'll find me clicking the newest post link, and then holding the scrollbar at the bottom until the seizures stop. I would like to look into a fix for this too...

I would give you my firstborn if you somehow fix that Fash. I knew it had nothing to do with youtube other than that it loads images from it, and their size screws up the calculation.
Anyway, I have a question: How much revenue yearly do you think is lost while flaming Winnow?
Also: we should restart this thread, and import all the links into it, and not fuck it up with an argument. That way, we can continue this derailment, and we won't lose some of the awesome videos posted (especially the dennis green one)

I can say that at least where I work, they've backed off the restrictions and unblocked the gmail, hotmail, ESPN, etc type websites, leaving the obvious pr0n sites, etc blocked. You can't expect someone to work 100% of the time...not these days, unless you're on an assembly line or something. Hell, we should be on a 4 day work week so in lieu of that, some surfing will suffice. Some jobs simply do not require 100% attention. In other jobe, creatively, it would be detrimental to limit access to the net. The focus should be on evaluating employee performance. If employee X does 200% of the work employee Y does but can still check out a YouTube video in the process...let him watch the freaking video...they're probably more content in their job with some freedom. I'd keep employee X rather than keep lipping Y employees that quit because the job sucks.
This "suit" mentality blows. You're not going to find that at Google HQ, Apple, etc. They've figured out, and rightly so, that performance is how you rate an employee. So, while the capability to restrict employee's access increases, there comes a backlash with that. Working your employees to death isn't one of the things encouraged in those manager meetings. Getting the most out of your employees doesn't mean restricting them.
I think you're reaching for things regarding the blocked cell signals for 95%+ of the people. I can see that in a secure environment. That's whack as half the people are babbling on their cell phones at work. There are less desk phones and more work related cell phones. I could see my old job at Motorola doing something like that as it was classified/secret military shit we were dealing with but even then, I still doubt it.

I believe it's because we already had this discussion over a year ago.
I'm a huge Winnow fan. I don't think anyone who's been paying attention would say that he doesn't contribute a lot here. He just needs to back off the crusading. The reality of youtube embedding vs. not embedding is that it doesn't affect anything in the grand scheme, he's just standing on principle for no reason.
Winnow, you're obviously entitled to your opinion. I can tell you however that these are the things our customers are asking for.

Didn't look if other people blamed Winnow, but I am just as responsible for the derailment as him. I tried to illustrate that by using "we" when I said we restarted threads. He also didn't actually embed videos, we just talked about embedding YouTube videos, weighing the pro/cons of doing so. You can not currently embed videos on VV.
Edit: Wow, when did I get two stars? Also, I never got jackassed, but my first post was a thread of Super Trooper quotes that Sueven and I started, so everyone probably assumed we were the same person or something.

They don't block cell signals, but they frown upon things like what I have been wanting with my iPhone (wifi from my cell) and wireless cards with laptops. Obviously the risk of someone creating their own network to send out customer information is the primary reason for this.

The 4th post on this thread should have two embedded YouTube videos. It depends if flash is enabled or not in your VV profile.
There's a phpBB plugin that makes embedding flash super easy but with [flash] you can do it with a little extra work:
add the =425,350 to the first part:

And if you have Flash disabled (as I do) you see a huge white box instead whereas normally you'd just see a nice one line link. That's the price of forward progress I guess.

That's not so bad! It's like a teaser!
Is it really a "huge" white box? It should be the exact dimensions of the YouTube video: 425x350

Read the whole fucking thread as well as the one in site/board development. Yes, he did say the line you quoted at the beginning of this thread, and it wasn't an issue until Bagar asked why anyone would care if they were embedded. He wants the YouTube code added to the BOARD, not the thread.

I'm trying, see above, to accommodate the people that are concerned about a "hit" on the YouTube server. People are bitching about an empty placeholder now.
I'd like to test out the YouTube tag. Since it's flash based, hopefully it will be blocked (no dreaded hit to server) by those that should have flash disabled anyway for their work.

The easiest way to accomodate them is to shut the fuck up about it and just let it go. It's not that big of a deal for fuck's sake. Embedded videos don't make that much difference. Most people either don't want them or don't give a fuck, so just accept it and quit crying about it already.

Why don't you shut the fuck up and post a video? Who cares if there's discussion in between the posts? Are you that fucking fragile that you're thrown off by comments in between videos?
I'm not sure about "most" people wanting this or that. I agree that the majority don't care...but the majority don't care about politics either. What's your point? Should the politicians just give up because the majority could give a shit?
