An upset win vs Mexico was the only ass the US kicked in 2002.
The US beating Mexico outside of Mexico is not an upset either. It's been fairly normal. If we're just judging the "kick ass" level by getting further in the World Cup, then the US kicked ass. If we're judging it by beating people soundly...

Poor France will have to consider that draw a loss. Not very exciting game, but Brazil steps out onto the field in about 50 minutes vs Croatia. Should be a good game to watch.

I'd say defeating one of the better European sides (Portugal) 3-2 was part of it too.

Portugal sucked hard 4 years ago.... did they even win a game?

They didn't do amazingly, but they did beat Poland 4-0. They lost 1-0 to later semi-finalists South Korea in a match where two portuguese players were sent off. So no, Portugal isn't a non-entity. The US did surprisingly well in 2002, if you ask me. I certainly wouldn't have put money on them advancing to the quarters.

I'm not sure how a record of 1-0-2 in group play can be considered anything but suck.

Did you see any of the matches? Yeah, Portugal weren't great, I already said that. But South Korea had the refs firmly on their side. The first red card was worth a yellow at most, the second one was okay - however, Park should've been booted for his late late late tackle of Pauleta and wasn't even booked.
I'm just saying: The US performed above expectations in defeating Mexico and Portugal and by drawing with South Korea. The Portugal team underperformed but still had some really strong indivudalists and the US managed to get ahead 3-0 and then defend against a portuguese team that came on damn strong.

Bah we didnt beat France
Pretty oring match even if 2 nice chances for Switzerland. The referee was the worst i have seen since the tournament started. The swiss defense was very good and has a bright future ahead, as the two central defenders ( when djourou came in) are around 20 years old.
Now we need to beat ghana and south korea...not an easy task but i think we can do it

and hope france go down to em !
Brazil-Croatia...not a really surprising result, croatia is not a bad team, like serbia. Cant wait to see who which one will pass between australia and croatia (i hope australia, not sure about japan, they didnt make a good impression on their first match)
edit: i dont mean to imply that serbia is a bad team, i meant that like serbia, croatia is a quiete good one, sorry for this !

I enjoyed it; I also like watching the Pistons and Spurs play basketball! I think I may be weird.

I didn't really enjoy the Ghana vs Italy game, nor the France game.
The Italy game only had a few exciting moments, and some bad calls.
The Brazil - Croatia game wasn't all that exciting either, i was expecting to be more excited to see Ronaldo and Ronaldinho play.. Ronaldo didn't do much and Ronaldinho had a few good moments, but nothing spectacular. I enjoyed watching Kaka however, he seems like he will have a good world cup with his deadly shot.
I am kind of looking forward to the Italy - USA game, although id have to put my money on Italy for the game. Got in a big debate with friend at work today who insists USA will take it. It will be a good game, and id love to see USA win, but in their state, going up against a power house like Italy is not the best thing for them right now.

The France game was worth watching for one thing alone: Zinedine Zidane. What he STILL can do with the ball is jawdropping.
The Spain - Ukraine game right now is entertaining for sure. I am very impressed by Spain so far.
Also, they need to water the fields more. Seen a lot of the players who dribble more than play in the air struggling due to the fields being dry. It is VERY hot so they need to water them more.

I wore my German national team jersey to work today! Too bad I won't get to see the game until I get home from work, but at least I have the HD-DVR now!

ok, Germany was a bit more agressive on the attack, I'll give them that. Both sides played a great defensive though!

spain dominated 4-0!
of course i am bias as hell, but i think they have a great chance of winning the entire thing (for once), very talented team

they also played a damn good game against germany, would have been close to a tie if it wasnt for a BS offsides call

True, spain got talent...but like every other world cup....i always wonder why they dont do better, but this time, it looks promising. Torres is a really good young player.
Didnt watch the germany-poland but read that germany deserved it.
As for Tunisia- Saudi Arabia (sp?) the winner of this game is probably Ukrainia (sp again

? ) as they still have a good chance to pass the group stage !
Another good football day ! Let's hope it goes on like that !

Poland's out. Not technically, but it's now pretty much a foregone conclusion. Equador will beat Costa Rica and even if they don't, they'll end up tying Poland with 1 win 2 losses, and Poland will be eliminated by the plus/minus in all probability. Unless they rack up a lot of points against Costa Rica... like 6 - 0 or something.
Germany and Equador should go on.

After the teams that have a realistic chance of winning have played their first matches, I have to say Brazil and Argentina are looking good. England played pathetically, Italy cried their way through their first game and Germany don't have a good enough defense to stave off attacks from world class strikers.
It's still very early days though

They did tear Serbia/Montenegro a friggin new one. They were even bringing in there subs to tear of a slice of the serbian pie! Weren't 2 of 6 goals made by subs?

Yep Sko, Tevez and Messi (this one got a great future ahead) both scored and beside, Messi made the decisive pass for Crespo.
In almost every games so far, subs are doing very good job....must be hot on the field and fresh players are keys !

It is damn hot.. and the FIFA has made a ridiculous rule about not being allowed to water the field the last 5 hours before a game. Stupid!

I seriously hope he never gets to ref again after this game, maybe that Italian league game fixing scandal was just practice for the World Cup. I have stated before that a ref does not ultimately decide a game result and I will stand by that statement, but damn this idiot has seriously tested my opinion.

Yeah, the first US red was insane...
AND 2-1 USA!
no...fuck....offside...gah!
anyway, the Uruguyan ref is fucking out there. Seems like he was scared to insult the italians and so pulled a red card to even the score. I hope Daniele De Rossi gets a 5 match ban, the fucker doesn't deserve to play again.

I find myself hoping the US wins, just for the last 2 games of this group. Awesomeness - a group where anyone can qualify makes for fun as hell games.
Btw: Kasey Keller is performing above and beyond (but McBride plays like he's had one scotch too many)

The ref in the Italy/US game is said to be the same one that had to "sit out" the last World Cup due to "irregularities" in 1998.

youre an idiot in terms of soccer knowledge
the US was a semifinalist without Oliver Kahn defying human performance standards and a german defender clearing a shot off the line with his hand
idiot
