They are now also made with Splenda (sucralose) addition (as well as sugar which makes no sense). So I can cross those off my shopping list. They need to clearly label packages that contain any sort of sugar substitute crap.

Nasty, well I switched to Swiss Miss since then (see my last post). How's it fare for sugar substututes? (I'm all out atm!) Is there a hot cocoa comparison site to compare them?

Why not just rip it open a touch and let the seal break??
There is not enough free space in the package. Opening it a touch does nothing but spill a little powder.
I suppose if you have the time to delicately make a surgical incision in the package you wouldn't spill any cocoa but I'm on the ten second cocoa plan. I go into the break room, grab a large styro cup and put a few icecubes in it, take two cocoa packages and rip them open as fast as possible pouring them into the cup and then use the hot water from the industrial coffee maker to fill the cup. I want to be in and out of there in as little time as possible otherwise I have to make small talk with people that bother me : ) Sooooo, to save the maid some clean up time, I'd like a cocoa package that doesn't blow up on me when I open it rapidly.
Think of Legally Blond's Bend and Snap...I want to Grab, Rip and Pour speedy like. A little air pocket in the package is all I'm asking for. That way you can give it a quick shake holding the top and then rip away.
I just field tested this, and it appears that Swiss Miss suffers from the same catastrophic failure.

I believe most companies that do hot choco powder will use a hi-speed (i'm talking about 600-800 pouches per minute), horizontal, continuous motion pouch machine. most of the problem is probably the type of pouch and web material that they are using. If it's a paper/poly mix or a paper/poly/foil mix that the machine is running, there's probably a lot of static with that type of material, so they install static eliminators so the product doesn't cling to the sealing area, thus making a cleaner seal on the top. However, this forces the powder to cling to the sides of the pouch, instead of having it settle down on the bottom, and when you open the pouch - viola! There's the powder, all over your hands and the counter.
Plus, they usually add gas flush to force the powder more into the pouch so they can get a cleaner seal (similar to vacuum packaging). This eliminates the need for 5 maintenance techs, instead able to have 1 or 2, and allows the packager to run on a more continuous basis, instead of stopping production every 3-4 hours to clean the machinery. Better ROI this way. They just make the consumers suffer more!!!! Besides, adding an air pocket for a powder fill on a pouch like that - it's a recipe for disaster in the packaging area!
