Some vets simply won't declaw kittens. I asked about it when I got my cat and the vet said she wouldn't do it but she would refer me to someone who would if I insisted. And she said it was physiologically equivalent to amputating humand fingers at the first knuckle, so I bought a scratch post.
As for the fighting thing, yes they use the front a bit but in a serious dust up, the front are for grabbing the target and the back are for ripping the fuck out of it. Kinda brings back memories of our family cat coming home limping because her claws were so full of dog hair she couldn't retract them (phear teh Siamese!).
