I generally don't, but if it's relevant to a conversation or if I'm asked about it, I'll talk about it. I generally don't mention it because, unfortunately, even if you're not the preachy type out to convert folks or have kookie ideas about why we should or shouldn't eat meat, merely mentioning that you don't gets you lumped in with the nuts more often than not.

Chimps Hunting Monkeys Closer to Extinction

Humans are behind a number of species extinctions, but in Uganda it's chimps that are hunting monkeys into oblivion. Chimps in Uganda have been hunting red colobus monkeys, so much so that the monkey's population has dropped 89% from 1975 to 2007. The findings were reported in the American Journal of Primatology this week.

According to the IUCN's Red List of endangered species (both the chimps and their prey are endangered), the red colobus monkey population is around 20,000 animals. Most of them live in Uganda's Kibale National Park, which also hosts the nation's largest chimp population. The decline in red colobus monkeys in the past 30 years has been accompanied with a 53% increase in chimp sightings, which researchers say suggests the two are related. The study's authors report that between the 1990s and 2002, chimps killed 15-53% of the monkey population every year. Although chimps are often solitary, during hunting raids they coordinate to kill the smaller, vegetarian colobus monkeys. The chimps preyed especially on young or juvenile monkeys, which created an additional reproductive toll on the species. A single chimp outweighs a single monkey by about 50 pounds (around 20 lbs vs. 70 lbs), so one can imagine that when they band together, the monkeys don't have much of a chance.

But why do chimps hunt in the first place? Some have theorized that males will hunt more during mating season to swap meat for sex with females, and some say that chimps hunt more during the dry season where the supply of fruit and leaves runs thin. At least one scientist has said both those theories are false, and that chimps actually hunt as a form of male bonding (sound familiar, humans?). We may never know exactly why chimps hunt, but a Yale professor interviewed by New Scientist says all is not lost for the red colobus monkeys of Uganda. Professor David Watts said that chimps are hunting less often than previously, meaning that young chimps may not be able to hunt as effectively as their elders.

Spang, I'd like to join you in this cause. I'll sign your petition to round these dastardly chimps up into camps, tattoo their forearms for identification and plan out a strategy to send them all to the gas chamber for crimes against the red monkey.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. Unless it's that the monkeys are vegetarians and thus that's why the evil chimps are killing them. Would you mind elaborating on what you re trying to convey to the audience?

So the female chimps like meat a lot if males are killing to get it for them. Seems like an article in favor of meat eating. Why the hell would female chimps put out if they didn't like meat? Male chimps would bring them bananas if that was the case.

It also could be that the chimp penis is too small to satisfy female chimps so added meat is needed to seal the deal while humans have been eating cock enlarging fruits, creating a penis which brings female humans to orgasm quicker, lessening the need to deliver extra meat to the sex party.

Yeah I'm still not sure what point he is trying to make with this "theory". Other than it makes female chimps evil and whore themselves out for meat.

The "at least one scientist" never said the other theories are false... as a matter of fact, he also observed that "several factors are likely to affect chimpanzee hunting decisions and meat sharing"

Newsflash: Nobody gives a shit if YOU decide not to eat meat (or the opposite). I don't think vegetarians are douchbags. It's the ones who spout it like a religion and try to beat everyone else over the head with their views of how evil eating animals are and how everyone else is going to hell. I'm pretty sure that's been explained already. If that's not you then grats.

Although I will mention that saying things like "The food chain was invented by humans to justify exploitation of animals" doesn't help your case. But if that's what you believe by all means go ahead but don't be surprised when there are those who don't. and will never, agree with you.

Isn't eating an apple like eating a baby fetus? Seeds are little developing babies. Pretty fucked up that you eat them. Tomato juice is like slurping down placenta.

There are people, fruitarians, who are very extreme in their diets. Some will only eat what can be harvested without killing the plant. Others will only eat the shit after it falls to the ground.

Read a thing on gardening using primarily annual plants a while back. The first was one of the reasons behind some doing it. Was a much more common practice before seed companies existed, lowered environmental impact too in part as the soil doesn't get disturbed.

Tomato plants are very toxic, nightshade family iirc.

That shit hitting the ground is little babies trying to be born. Veggies scarf them up before the harmless lifeforms can be born and grow. Eating an apple as it drops off a tree is the same as eating a baby's head as it pops out of a human's womb. Where to veggies draw the line? They are baby eaters as far as I'm concerned and seem to choose what they deem is worthy of living instead of valuing all life forms equally.

Well it says nothing about removing meat so not sure how 'good' it is in the context of this thread. It basically just takes the pyramid and turns it into a pie chart (mmm pie) while revising some of the categories. Now I'm not going to flip out about it like I've seen on other sites since obviously pyramids = mid east (aka SYMBOLYS OF TERRORISMISTS!) but was this really necessary?

If there's any meat, fish, poultry, eggs or dairy in the "food pie," it's flawed. Also, to be honest, I haven't cut out dairy from my diet, yet. Eggs, yes. Dairy, working on it. Cheese and Ranch are really the only things keeping me from being vegan. Well, that, and my shoes and belt.

Of course there will be. We're still a very ignorant, regressive society. We still believe in fairy tales written during the Bronze Age. Approximately 38% of us want Sarah "I love that smell of emissions" Palin to be our goddamn president. And we still engage in unnecessary, barbaric wars, among many other not-so-progressive things.

Chickens don't lay eggs for our omelets, they do that to reproduce. Similarly, cows aren't producing milk for us, but for their calves. Animals weren't put on this planet for humans, just like black people weren't put on this planet for white people, and women weren't put here for men. We're much smarter people now. We don't have to slaughter animals to survive. The sooner we all realize this, the better.

But chickens lay eggs whether there's a rooster around or not. You know, just like human females ovulate whether you are around or not. So isn't it ethically worste being wasteful and leaving unfertilized chicken embryos to rot, which is what would happen if they weren't eaten? Now, I'm not going into the discussion about factory farming because that's an entirely different discussion. We can remove that from the equation by asking: Why not eat eggs if you have chickens in your backyard that you're taking care of?
