What operating system do you use, and why?

No holds barred discussion. Someone train you and steal your rare spawn? Let everyone know all about it! (Not for the faint of heart!)

Windows XP, because it's the most stable OS I can find that doesn't have a huge learning curve.

2k Pro here, cause 98 2nd edition sucks ass.
Why? Two words : memory leakage. I play EQ with WinAmp running and I would get kicked out because WinAmp would perform an "illegal operation". Hell, even a friend tossed his 98 SE disc into the river

I prefer the general friendliness in XP over previous incarnations.. just seems more chiper and all.

XP Pro

This is actually a good operating system and, by far, Microsoft's best. Were it an ideal world, I would not be forced to use a Microsoft OS, in which case I would be running Linux.

XP... It's a decent operating system and I work for the company that makes it so it was cheap.

XPP, and let me splain why....No more going to my dads house every weekend to fix his broke crap or explain how to use something. Two words, Remote Assistant. First day he installed it, he calls me up and asks how to use the new XP feature to burn a cd. So I took control of his desktop while he watched, and SHOWED him how to burn a cd from across town. Easily worth its weight in Plutonium if you ask me. XPP, love it or spend an eternity at your parents house showing them the ABC's of computing!

-edit- now if I can keep Quetus from burning out hardware every month my life would be complete.

RH Linux 2.4.something is what i voted for.

i of course use many different OS' but Linux is my favorite. The only reason i run windows at all is to play EQ. So WinXP is another i use. OpenBSD, AIX as well.

Win2K

XP Pro has some nice features, but not enough driver support. Also, having functions I use regularly buried behind dumbass 'wizards' really annoys me.

I have Windows XP Pro because I got from work for free. It has really nice eye candy but I am sure that I will get bored with it eventually. It does run really smooth though and it starts up really fast. Normally I like to buy my software but sometimes you have to give in to that lil pirate inside of you.

W2K Pro still. It works for me and haven't felt the need to upgrade to XP. First time I haven't upgraded to a new OS version immediately.

Depends on whick machine. My EQ machine is running XP pro, I also have a Win 2000 Advanced Server and the laptop runs any of the following depending on which Hard Drive I drop in it: Windows 98 SE, Linux, Windows 2000 Pro, Win XP Pro. At home, I usually run Linux so I can have show EQ open :)

What do you "do" with FreeBSD?

What Software do you run?

What software runs best on it?

 *ahem* I don't see Mac OS X anywhere up there.... this clearly is an innocent oversight, and I trust that it will be corrected post haste.

People PAY for OS's?

Hmm

But on a serious note, I use XP on box 3 (which is also my FTP server), XP on secondary EQ machine, and WIN98SE on Primary EQ Machine. Of course Primary EQ machine has nothing other than the OS and DirectX on it, with EQ being on its own 10krpm HD
