Grandma got the kids the new Beauty and the Beast DVD and I have a small problem with it. It plays fine in the computer reader but will not play in the reader connected to the TV - it thinks there is no disc loaded.
Any suggestions (besides getting a new DVD)?

I'm sticking with the dirty lens theory then
If it's getting a bit dirty you'll prolly get problems on some discs and not others. . .they'll vary depending on the quality of their construction. If you have a borderline faulty disc, perhaps your TV-player is a little more sensitive to them.
Try it on more players and see how many of them complain?
Edit: And of course check the disc itself is clean. If it looks "cloudy" or as if it has condensation on it when it doesn't then you have a duff disc and can probably get your money back.

OK, you are going to think this is crazy as all fuck, but you might try boiling the DVD. There were some links on Xbox's pages a while back about boiling discs to remove the protective coatings that sometimes interfered with the discs being read. Sounds crazy as hell, but as a last resort you could try it and see if it works. They swear that it works for gaming discs.
