What song captures the 80's best?

Post by Momopi »

I was talking with my friends and this subject came up...If you could pick one song that embodies the 80's what song would you say? I came up with "Don't you forget about me" by Simple minds....that song is what the 80's is all about. What song would you guys and gals say?

/agree Momopi. If I had to pick one and only one, it would be that. Kinda goes hand-in-hand with The Breakfast Club being the movie of the 80's.

Yep, Simple Minds.

Although I do recall a massive Depeche Mode phase as well.

Manfred Mann..Lies (All through the 80's)

For a song that was writen in 1980 and recorded in 81 its right on target for the whole decade.

I love almost everything that came out in the 80's, narrowing it down it's hard to say, but for me the true 80's song would be:

"Gloria" Only reason I say this is my mom used to go around singing it in the house and would drive me and my siblings mad, and make the dog howl.

For the 90's, there's really no ther choice than "Smells like Teen Spirit". That song and style was a breath of fresh air. We need another musical revolution soon.

"If You Leave" by OMD from the very classic Pretty In Pink

Even though we hate him now, you gotta give credit to Michael Jackson's Thriller album. That embodied everything that was 80s right down to a dance (Moonwalk) and clothing (silver gloves, red jacket)

You can find good and bad music in any decade. Then again, since it's all subjective, who really cares.

Either "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell or "I Ran (So Far Away)" by A Flock of Seagulls is the song that most epitomizes that decade.

However, the best song from the 80's, IMO, is "Atomic" by Blondie

I hated the 80's, and not just because my adolescence spanned the decade. It was a very materialistic decade. The celebratory spirit of the 70's and the deepening self-consciousness of the 90's were far more enjoyable.

Who said anything about costs? The 80's are NOTORIOUSLY known as a decade of materialistic attitudes. The baby boomer generation was chin deep in career advancement, aspiring to be rich. Shows like Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous were popular. Fashion trends, despite what you think, were NOT cheap. I remember my parents wailing about the expensive parachute pants, Guess jeans, Swatch watches, Liz Claiborne purses etc that teens demanded. The 90's were far more laid back as far as style and expense. Hello, grunge?

My guess is between Noon and 4PM EST, because I've never had a job where I wasn't working those hours, and I haven't seen a video (not counting TRL which is 100% shit) in years.

Most nights MTV shows videos from like 1 or 2am-6am. That's 4 or 5 solid hours right there!
