What song captures the 80's best?
I was talking with my friends and this subject came up...If you could pick one song that embodies the 80's what song would you say? I came up with "Don't you forget about me" by Simple minds....that song is what the 80's is all about. What song would you guys and gals say?

/agree Momopi. If I had to pick one and only one, it would be that. Kinda goes hand-in-hand with The Breakfast Club being the movie of the 80's.

I love almost everything that came out in the 80's, narrowing it down it's hard to say, but for me the true 80's song would be:
"Gloria" Only reason I say this is my mom used to go around singing it in the house and would drive me and my siblings mad, and make the dog howl.

You can find good and bad music in any decade. Then again, since it's all subjective, who really cares.Aabidano wrote:Dogs of War - Pink Floyd

Economically, musically and socially the 80s were a cesspit.

Socially the 80's were bad? How so
Good call on Smells Like Teen Spirit for the 90's.Aranuil wrote:I couldn't agree with you more.Fairweather Pure wrote:For the 90's, there's really no other choice than "Smells like Teen Spirit". That song and style was a breath of fresh air. We need another musical revolution soon.
70's < 90's < 80's

I hated the 80's, and not just because my adolescence spanned the decade. It was a very materialistic decade. The celebratory spirit of the 70's and the deepening self-consciousness of the 90's were far more enjoyable.

As opposed to what, now? The 90's? You can spend more to dress ratty than you could on Izods. The whole decade wasn't some Ratpack flick you know.Lalanae wrote:I hated the 80's, and not just because my adolescence spanned the decade. It was a very materialistic decade. Who said anything about costs? The 80's are NOTORIOUSLY known as a decade of materialistic attitudes. The baby boomer generation was chin deep in career advancement, aspiring to be rich. Shows like Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous were popular. Fashion trends, despite what you think, were NOT cheap. I remember my parents wailing about the expensive parachute pants, Guess jeans, Swatch watches, Liz Claiborne purses etc that teens demanded. The 90's were far more laid back as far as style and expense. Hello, grunge?

Most nights MTV shows videos from like 1 or 2am-6am. That's 4 or 5 solid hours right there!masteen wrote:My guess is between Noon and 4PM EST, because I've never had a job where I wasn't working those hours, and I haven't seen a video (not counting TRL which is 100% shit) in years.Chidoro wrote:Besides, what time of day do you have to watch now just to see a fucking video on MTV anyhow?
