Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Post by Aslanna »

Probably the biggest news story of the year thus far. What is everyone's opinion? Overblown? Not overblown?

China kept people in their houses, Italy on lockown, Germany (Merkel) says 2/3rd of their citizens will contract it, conferences and conventions everywhere being cancelled...

I'm not sure if I am over-worrying or not worrying enough.

It's not overblown simply due to how serious everyone is taking it.

I went into a normal grocery store (not Costco) and the toilet paper row was empty.

The entertainment industry has already taken a beating. Delayed movies, delayed games, Seattle's restaurants are empty.

Pretty much all large events are being cancelled.

The US military is preparing to cope with COVID-19 not now, but planning for what they expect the real outbreak will be next fall/winter

The financial markets are a mess, compounded by the oil wars going on right now. No one needs oil and everyone is flooding the market with it. On a side note, in the late 70's early 80's there were serious thoughts that we would run out of oil by 2020. I find it funny that we have more oil than we know what to do with in 2020 with no end in sight.

No fans allowed at the March Madness tournaments. Biden/Sanders debate with no audience.

Trump is addressing the nation tonight regarding the Coronavirus.

This is far from complete. There is an endless stream of cancelled, delayed, altered events.

I noticed less cars on the streets the past few days.

You have to take this seriously because the reaction to it has been far beyond anything I've ever seen regarding a pandemic in the US. The world is taking it seriously as well.

OK this just became scary.

Crypto market crashed 25% overnight and that was already down 25% over the past few weeks. (edit: make that 30% overnight)

Futures halted for a second time in a week on the stock market. If not, the market would crash maybe the worst since the crash of 1929. Can guarantee the market will be halted again after the open.

It's full on panic in the financial markets. This transcends political views.

NBA Season suspended (NBA player has COVID-19)
California cancels all gatherings of more than 250 people.

This is nuts. And I mean blow right by recession to depression nuts.

And what was up with Trump during his speech last night? He looked like he was about to keel over. Like him or not, he didn't look healthy last night.

With Tom Hanks and his wife testing positive for COVID-19, it also escalates things with some well known faces getting it.

For the first time I'm actually looking at my stock of Soylent and happy I have a month's supply. I imagine Soylent is getting huge orders right now.

This is going to get nasty in the short term. These severe measures to contain CORVID-19 are impressive but at the same time, it's going to crash the market and cause panic. Stopping all flights to Europe (except the UK) is major.

Almost all businesses are impacted by this. Tech sector for sure. Entertainment (movies./restaurants, etc) hugely impacted.

I think COVID-19 itself we'll get over but the steps taken and panic over the virus may cause a long term downtrend. I think we won't know how bad until next fall/winter.

I went to the grocery store yesterday. It wasn't too bad other than no paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, etc) and a lot of the cleaning products were gone. I went back today and it was 10x more crazy. It was like people preparing for a hurricane or something.

Items that there were none of (that I remember): Bread, milk, eggs, fresh meat (and not much frozen), pasta, pasta sauce. tuna (canned and in the packages), a lot of the canned items in general (vegetables, soup, etc), rice, tortillas, parmesan cheese (that one hurt since I wanted to get some more), and potatoes and onions were also gone. The shelves were full of these items yesterday.

I didn't check the beverages section but I'd imagine the water was gone. Which is weird because like. The city water supply will probably keep on functioning normally. One can hope, anyway!

This just goes to show our country isn't ready for things like this. I can't imagine how it would be if some other greater disaster took place.

Friday I went to the grocery store. Not a single paper or plastic item available. Entire row was completely empty.

No:

Toilet paper
Paper Towels
Napkins
Paper Plates
Bowls
Plastic utensils

NOTHING.

a few months ago I accidentally grabbed a six pack of paper towels thinking it was toilet paper. Now I'm glad I have that as backup!

I think twice about using paper products like napkins. I actually use less TP : )

There isn't a "normal" supply issue with these things. It depends on when the horders feel they have enough, we can start buying these products again. That may be awhile because now everyone is going to grab these products when they see them...not because they're hording but because they are low on supply at home. Need to revisit this in a week, month, year.

I don't think food will be a problem, but I have a two month supply of Soylent so I may be better off than most in that area. The less I need to go to the grocery store the better.

I took a trip behind the (then) Iron Curtain in 1984 to the now non existent country Czechoslovakia. I observed many things on that trip but pertaining to this topic, there was zero toilet paper in public places , restaurants museums, etc. It sucked. I ended up wiping my ass with part of a paper gift bag. I think we're temporarily heading that direction. Any places, that are still open, will probably have toilet paper issues as people will steal it...yes even those big rolls, they just unroll it if cant take the entire roll.

We are now a society where taking a shit is an issue or soon will be. It will be an interesting month, and they another interesting round 2 next fall. I saw one estimate that this present "norm" could last up to 18 months.

Went to grocery store this morning. I scored a box of tissue paper. The only paper product on the shelves.

They took away the hand baskets so I had to carry everything I bought.

Things looked pretty grim in the store. Some lady was coughing on one of the self check outs so I waited for a different one.

I wiped everything down with surface wipes when I got home. Amazing the things you touch when you are consciously paying attention.

Would suck balls to be working in a grocery store, convenience store, etc right now...not to mention health care workers. This was my one trip out of my home in the past week and don't plan any for another week+.

Take COVID-19 seriously and your health in general because anything other than COVID goes wrong and you'll have a hard time getting treatment etc with the hospitals full of patients etc.

I went to the grocery store on Wednesday. Surprisingly, other than paper products and cleaning supplies, they were fairly well stocked. There were limited amounts of some things (tuna, rice, uh.. some others) but for the most part you wouldn't be able to tell that strange things were afoot at the Circle K. Most of the basics (bread, milk, eggs, etc) were in stock.

They had no sanitizing wipes at the door but there was a dude wearing a mask that would spray and wipe down the cart handle for you.

Truly fuckin surreal times we are in. This was my first time out in 2 weeks. I have enough shit for at least 4 weeks now as long as I don't want fresh fruits or veg.

Oh yeah, one thing, most of the people there were totally unaware of Social Distancing. omg stop getting so close to me!

So I now live in Wichita, KS. The 'Rona is not too bad here, despite the fact that our state goobermint was slow to react; being a small, non-tourist orientated state played in our favor.

I'm in I.T., classed as essential, so I'm still working, but thankfully we've been allowed to work from home since 17MAR2020. Gone to a couple client offices, and even people who are close talkers have been keeping a distance.

Of note: working from home rules. I'm hourly, so they discourage massive OT, but some stuff simply can't be done during the day. But now that I can break up my day into more manageable pieces instead of the tyranny of COMMUTE/OFFICE/LUNCH/OFFICE/COMMUTE, it's way easier to get the after hours work in without crushing my morale or blowing up the payroll.

I really hope that some positive lessons are learned from this. So many jobs can and should allow for working from home, period.

Agreed! I have worked from home for 4 or 5 years now, so the impact on me has been relatively low. I've been saying the same thing though, I think one of the positives to come out of the other end of this is going to be forcing the conversation of working from home.

Where I am we've been working from home since 16-Mar. They just extended that to 04-May.

It's going to be so hard going back to the office. That hour a day spent commuting adds up over time!

But on the flip side I'm grateful that my job so far hasn't really been impacted and that I've been able to do it remotely. There are a lot of others out there not as fortunate.

So it seems like a vaccine is on it's way. Who will be lined up day one to receive it? I'm no anti-vaxxer but I do think it may have been rushed through a little too fast so I'll be waiting.

Most things at the store have gone back to normal but paper towels still seem to never be in stock. I don't use them but I do find it curious.

PS: People, typically Republicans, are still fuckwads in not wearing masks.

I still have trouble finding hand soap, of all fucking things. The Mrs. Meyers hand soap refill I usually get has not been in stock anywhere for months when I've checked.

You're not really going to have a choice on waiting. By the time it's readily available to people that aren't elderly, health care workers, etc - a couple more months will have gone by, and any major issues would have surfaced by then. I'll be taking it once I can.

I'll be waiting as long as I can. The articles I read about the reactions to the vaccine (both brands) don't encourage me to get it until millions of others have. I don't have to do anything work related until next June, if even then. I'm perfectly happy to stay home except for a trip to the grocery store every 10 days or so.

COVID cases are at their worst. American citizens (and illegals) no matter which party, seem apathetic about it. It's a difficult situation with all the small businesses going under and some large ones like the Cinemas, etc. It's more a sign of the times than anything. It's not a political thing, it's a social thing. Too many cancel culture or apathetic types these days to go along with the dumb as fuck "woke" middle aged white women. It's a combination that's ripe for disaster and there's probably no solution to it. The U.S. is heading far left or far right. My money is ultimately on a far right fascist government after the dust clears.

I'm more interested in when the BLM riots crank back up again after they figure out they aren't getting jack shit no matter who's in office and don't deserve anything. If you reward laziness, the country will collapse. The question is can our nation survive the next four years until the next obvious shift back to the right, minus Trump. The socialist will fail because you can't just keep pumping out money to aid lazy people who would rather think of themselves as victims. The only question will be if it ends in civil war or not. You've seen how nasty and ugly the left can be with their riots/looting/vandalism. That's nothing compared to what pissed off hillbilly backwoods militias are capable of if things flip the other way.

Lets see how this "diverse" government does. Take a gander at how well diversity has worked in the Mayer political office in big cities over the past ten years. It's got disaster written all over it.

Current chances of obtaining a job:

80 % Black
85% Black Female
95% Black Female that's in a wheel chair, gimp, blind, retarded or also once had a penis
5% White Male - but helps if you're gay.
0% Whilte Female - yes the same stupid "woke" group that's fighting for "the man".

All equally qualified? No. People that are currently getting jobs based on portraying themselves as victims but in reality are just lazy or stupid? Shitloads.

The U.S. is screwed until we get back to hiring people based on qualifications instead of race or level of gimpiness. That includes everyone of every race or level of gimpiness, based on their merit.

You know... If white cops stop shooting unarmed black people and then getting off scott free perhaps there would be less dissention. But being a well-to-do white male who watches Fox News all day I'm sure you weren't aware that was a large reason for the protests.

The rest of your post isn't worth commenting on. Just a bunch of random nonsense that has zero to do with the topic at hand (covid-19).

Ever look into the profiles of these "saints" that have died? Last dude held a gun to a pregnant lady's stomach. I find it hilarious how these people get martyred no matter what their fucking color happens to be. I'm all for reforms. I'm 100 percent against "defunding the police". They just use the occasion as a catalyst to vandalize and loot.

And here you demonstrate the problem and why people like you are a big part of it. Even if what you say checks out for that one particular person, the last time I checked cops aren't judge and executioner. They should be following the same laws they are there to enforce.

If you can't do that without being a racist piece of shit go find another job. I'm sure the Trump organization will have a place for you.

I fully agree that the specific police actions were unjustified. My problem lies in martyring these dirtbags that happen to be the victims. It doesn't all the sudden make these people great. Sure, protest the act, don't try and make these losers anything more than they were though.

That's probably asking too much. Can you imagine if these mobs of idiots focused on the actual police officers that were involved instead of generalizing it to the entire police population? I can't.

But the problem is that the entire "brotherhood" of the police population is protecting the pieces of shit that straight up murder people. If they would stop doing that then sure... Maybe we could start making progress.

In general I am for unions but in the case of police officers I am not because they never hold anyone accountable.

Unions are great if you're lazy. Get those locked in hourly wages no matter what the quality of work. They kind of work like the mob does.

I'm all for reforms. I'm totally against general violence toward police which is exactly what's happening. They aren't all corrupt. Far from it. That's like saying all black people are bad after seeing one of them commit a crime. Sure, lynch mobs were a thing in the past. Now the lynch mobs are the idiots rioting, vandalizing, looting and acting like morons whenever one of these incidents takes place.

Where funding for police has been cut, crime has skyrocketed. These moronic politicians are doing in their own cities. These "poor souls" that don't deserve to be killed by the police are still committing crimes and now with less likelihood of being arrested due to police apathy. There are still assloads of arrests each day for all races and colors. If police were killing them all, you'd hear about it in this current social media culture. Hell, if a black dude stubs his toe during an arrest, you'll hear abut it but not if a white dude does. There needs to be police reform but the incidents get blown way out of proportion.

Union busting consultants get paid as much as $350 an hour or $2,500 a day to fend off unions. Capitalists spend roughly $340 million a year to help ensure workers get paid as little as possible.

So the news today states the the UK new COVID strain is not only more contagious but also more deadly.

How long can you people stretch out the Trump blame? I can't wait to hear how this is all Trump's fault some more.

I'm not getting vaccinated for awhile. I'll see how the two double dose versions fare for a few months and the single dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine's results, and also how they all fare vs the new strain.

Going by some news I saw yesterday, at the current vaccination rate it will be summer of 2022 before we are mostly vaccinated and only a change late in 2021 of reaching 75% vaccinated herd immunity. Not sure if that accounted for the new strain or if it's covered by the present vaccinations.

If you get bored of blaming Trump for all of this (lol, fucking idiots) you can always just pick another republican president and blame them for a change of pace. It's Reagans fault! It all started with Nixon! Democrats and their blame games.

Nobody "blames" Trump for the virus. We blame him for his lack of response. Apparently their administration didn't even have a plan for vaccine distribution. But go ahead and keep making excuses for that sad excuse for a human being. We've come to expect it from you.

I just saw something yesterday that said the CDC doesn't even have a clue how many doses each state has. And this is all because the federal government had no plan - I'm not sure if Trump intentionally just sent it out so he could say he did his part and blame the states, or what the excuse was, but it's not acceptable either way. There should've been strict guidelines from the federal level on every little detail of the rollout - if for no other reason than to stop hospital board executives from getting the fucking vaccine before the actual front line workers. Fucking capitalism disgusts me.

Got my first covid-19 shot (Moderna) last Thursday, 9:30am

My reaction to it:

-slightly sore arm an hour after the shot
-slept for a few hours
-felt tired rest of day, arm slowly got sorer
-semi restless sleep
-woke up, 24 hours later, had the feeling you get when your about to get the flu
-slight fever
-arm a lot more sore
-fever/feeling like onset of flu persisted until went to bed, arm very sore
-48 hours, all symptoms gone or minimal, no more sore arm

Not looking forward to 2nd shot in a month. 1st shot symptoms were annoying but tolerable. Hoping fairly strong reaction to first shot eases the more severe typical reaction to 2nd shot but we'll see. I plan on another 2 days of feeling like I'm about to get the flu.

For symptoms, Pfeizer slighly better than Moderna according to reports, but long term effectiveness of each version is still unknown. The single dose Johnson & Johnson doesn't look as promising.

1st shot was Moderna, and the only effect I had was a sore left shoulder. That went away over the night since I happen to sleep on that side. Second shot is tomorrow, or I will wait for my scheduled appt on Monday.

As far as unvaccinated people go some of them have some dumb excuses. One person told me they didn't want to get it because it wasn't FDA approved. So I asked again once it received approval and they still aren't getting it although I don't remember the exact reasons as I tuned them out at that point. Sad that this has become politicized.

After a year and a half, and trying to bring us back just as Delta was spreading, my workplace has given up and announced a 100% Work From Home policy for IT.

Apparently a bunch of people quit because they didn't want to go back to the office and the company was finding it hard to hire replacements because job seekers are now only looking for fully remote jobs.

Either way I'm not complaining about that. Now I can move somewhere I actually want to live rather than living somewhere I don't want to be simply due to a job.

Yeah, I think normalizing WFH is one of the good things that will come of the pandemic. I have and will always be a proponent of just culling people that don't want to get the vaccine because: it has a microchip in it, it's some Chinese control move, requiring it is fascism, and any variety of "my opinion is of equal or greater weight than scientific consensus". Gotta start working on population control somewhere.
