Edge of Tomorrow

Post by Winnow »

Image
Summary: Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy. [Warner Bros. Pictures]
Think Bill Murray's Groundhog Day but the objective is to figure out how to defeat the alien enemy while dying each day.

Best Tom Cruise movie since Risky Business. It's his best acting IMHO. It's an action movie, not a drama so it's not academy award stuff but he plays a solid character. There are some funny bits thrown in as he dies a shitload of times.

Edge of Tomorrow impressed way beyond my expectations. I give it a good rating on the "Sucks, Bad, Average, Good, Great" scale.

Cruise does a good job with a pretty basic plot. Special effects n stuff are good.

Cruise has been knocking it out of the park when it comes to scifi for years now.

With a $48.2 million domestic debut, "The Fault in Our Stars" thumped the $29.1 million opening for "Edge of Tomorrow," according to studio estimates Sunday. It did so with a far less seasoned star in Shailene Woodley and a $12 million budget a fraction the size of that for "Edge of Tomorrow," made for approximately $175 million.
That might be it for big budget Cruise movies. We'll have to see how he fares playing an older role. I don't think he's the "Expendables" old action hero type.

I think even Serenity had a 30M opening weekend. Joss Whedon rebounded from that. Edge of Tomorrow would have been absolutely crushed if a big movie like Avengers 2 or something came out the same weekend. Part of that is that the trailers don't make it seem that interesting.

Booo, has Tom Cruise in it, won't watch. My list of "ruin a film by their very presence" actors is short but he's on it. (along with Rob Schneider, Pauly Shore, Adam Sander, Sylvester Stallone...)

Just think of all the great Pauly Shore movies you're missing out on.

However.. Sylvester Stallone... Really?

He is sort of on that list for me too, but I made an exception for this and it was fucking worth it. He is absolutely fantastic in this movie, and I never even once thought about the fact that I normally don't like him much for the entire length of this flick.

Pretty fucking good movie! I now regret not seeing it in the theater. I just ordered the blu-ray after seeing it via Amazon PPV. It is amazing how this film mimics beating a very difficult video game.

The movie was ok. I am still undecided on the ending.
