As for your precious DDR5 you keep mentioning:
GDDR5 actually has around ~8-10x worse latency compared to DDR3. So the CPU in the PS4 is going to be hurt. Everybody's talking about bandwidth but the Xbox One is going to have such a huge latency advantage that maybe in the end it's going to be better off.
One thing I think that the article failed to point out was that even though there is a 33% difference in hardware on GPU, there is NOT a 33% different in performance. As the GPU grows in parts, the gains go up logarithmically, not linear like this article suggests. I'd say there is likely less than a 10% performance gain on the PS4 part. Yet it will use almost twice the power, be much hotter requiring more loud cooling. Yuck! Add to that the performance of the Windows kernel for processing, something Sony could never be able to match, I'd bet that they are probably almost equal in the end.

I love how winnow effortlessly switches between "specs mean nothing compared to real world performance" to "I will now break down latency values and logarithms to mathematically prove to you why this hardware is better than that hardware"

a true drooling console retard. Like anyone over the age of 14 gives a fuck.

Your opinion means nothing because companies sell their consoles at a loss to sell software and you don't buy your own games. You like Microsoft consoles because they are easier to hack. Your opinion also means nothing because you're stupid.

Do you require a further technical breakdown? I would think pretty much anyone on this site can look at those specs and draw their own conclusions, but there are lots of tech sites out there doing a line by line break down if you really want to see how wide the gap is. Developers are also Tweeting the differences too if you want to go that route!
What I want is benchmarks. Dude, PS3 was more powerful than the Xbox 360. You can throw some amazing stats at me regarding the honeycomb processor. Now, lets get back to the real world...how did the PS3 compare to the 360? Almost always, the 360 games looked and performed better or at worse the same in FPS and textures.

Why not give me how freaking amazing the honeycomb CPU was in the PS3? It had like a bagillion cores compared to Xbox's 3 cores. How'd that work out?

I haven't seen any comments from developers saying the PS4 will be a superior platform to develop for. At least show me something worthwhile because the stats you mentioned don't mean much by themselves, the same as PS3's supposedly superior specs meant jack shit last gen when it came to actual game quality. Both systems will be much easier to develop multi platform games for as they are similar to PCs this gen. Xbox One runs on Win 8 core. Can't hurt it's chances for PC/Xbox games.

I'm looking forward to more detailed comparisons after geeks get access to them.
But this isn't cell vs xenon anymore, which really held back 3rd party developers from exploiting the PS3's power. It was a constant complaint. First party studios did it seem to extract more power than 3rd party devs though. Just look at games like God of War 3/4, Killzone 2/3, and Uncharted 2/3.

This upcoming generation is x86 vs x86. For all intents and purposes it's like programming for 2 PCs, where one is simply more powerful than the other and has less bloat to run on the side as well. The PS4 is more powerful than the Xbone on a very basic level. It isn't just a little. It isn't a matter of which one is more powerful than the other but instead it's a matter of how much more powerful will the PS4 be at the end of the day. While 3rd party games will easily look better on the PS4, first party games will be heads and shoulders (visually at least) over what the Xbone first party people will be able to produce. Will they be better games? I have no idea. I think the 360 had better exclusives up until the end of the console life cycle but MS has been phoning it in the past year. Halo 4 and Forza Horizon were great ways to go out, but Sony has quite a few more exclusives this late in the game.

Sony just feels humbled and hungry right now, while MS is full of hubris like Sony was at the PS3 announcement. It's the third console curse!

Dude, the PS4 won't be "heads and shoulders" above the Xbox One. They may have something like a 10% advantage in "real" performance in certain areas so it's possible they may look slightly better but nothing extraordinarily better. You're looking at possibly better frame rates. We'll have to wait and see how things pan out but there's no one out there saying PS4 titles will be "head and shoulders" above what the Xbox One can produce.

As for x86 vs x86, I mentioned that months ago. You aren't telling me anything here I haven't already told you young padawan.

Jan 31st on PS4 thread:

Hoping they solve the crab hands issue with a controller designed for this century and maybe actually give it a custom GPU this time and standard CPU that's not retarded hard to program for developers.
Feb 1st on PS4 thread:
Winnow wrote:Looks like the major drawback (whacky cell processor) has been avoided this round so the two consoles should be more competitive. Sony has also learned quite a bit from their complete online fail for most of this console generation. While PLUS is looking good, their online store, etc still needs a lot of work.
I'm glad PS4 went with non whacky specs this generation. I'll be getting both. I'll get two of each if/when they get hacked. While people here seem to think the PS4 will be the preference for the "gamer", that makes no sense to me. Microsoft is attempting to add more multimedia capabilities but they are also already the best online platform and the specs between the two consoles (except for the controller which Xbox dominates clearly), are too close to be the difference maker. It comes down to the exclusive games and online which we'll have to wait and see.

For me, second hand games matter absolutely zero. As I've said before. If I pay for a game, I want the game developer to get as much of my money as possible and that's by buying games on day one, new, at full price when I do buy games. On the rare occasion I buy an older game, I'll still buy it new as opposed to used. I could give a rats ass about used games. I also can't remember the last time I played an Xbox game or PS2 game so I am near positive the same will hold true this generation and I won't look back at that stack of two to three hundred Xbox games I have once the next gen consoles are released. There's simply too many good new games released to be playing old games.

The thing is it's not all about you. You have to gauge how the average customer views it. I'd say a large chunk of people (at least 40%!) will find this an issue. Having said that I also don't think most people will change their 'allegiance' . If they went with 360 they'll more than likely go with the XBO this time as well. I had both but I know for certain this time I'm not interested in Xbox at all.

Considering the members of this forum, even you bargain people don't buy used games. You wait for sales. Who gives a fuck about used games? Games go on sale and drop in price quick enough that I don't hear you people complaining about used games unless it's a talking point on a console war thread.

Xbox One games will phone home to Microsoft servers on a regular basis to verify that their users own the games. If you buy a used title, however, Polygon claims that you won't have to pay Microsoft for a fresh license to the game.

Simply popping in the game disc and installing it will reportedly establish lawful ownership as far as Microsoft's servers are concerned. When you install the game on your Xbox One, you'll be deauthenticating it on the previous owner's account, according to Polygon.
Doesn't sound like Microsoft is charging for used games. Since the game needs to be installed on the HD to play anyway, it looks like friends can borrow your games anytime they please. Even better is if the game remains installed on the HD, so you just need to pop in the BluRay wherever you want to play it to update and switch authentication checks.
Xbox One would phone home once every 24 hours to make sure games were being played by their owners, and that friends could play a game for free as long as an authenticated owner was logged in with their account. Polygon's sources say the authentication might possibly be waived for certain groups that might have extreme difficulty authenticating, like active military personnel.

The recent confusion might stem from what Harrison said next: he told publications that if you left a game installed on a friend's Xbox One, that friend could only play the game if he paid Microsoft for a fresh license. That could still be correct: it'd be the same as buying a downloadable tile, only you don't need to download the game.
Sounds like an improvement. Instead of just letting your buddy borrow your game, you're giving him the entire game installed which they can buy online if they feel like it, or just delete the install whenever, even months after giving you back your Blu Ray. So now you can take your stack of Xbox One games to aunt petunia's house that doesn't have any games. Install them all. The lazy asses don't even have to download or go to the store. if they like it, click buy. If not, they got to play the game just like always when you let someone borrow a game. And, since some of you dumbasses probably haven't thought of it, you can share xbox live logins. At worst, when you go up to Aunt Petunia's house next thanksgiving, all of your games are already installed and all you have to do is login with your Xbox Live ID to play them.

And then there's this:
Rumor has it that Microsoft's Xbox One console will feature remote play through Skype, allowing someone to remotely take over gameplay on the local console directly from a Skype call. Either player may break the remote play session at any time.

Supposedly the feature is in testing phase right now, though Polygon's source notes that certain details are still up in the air – like how long that individual can remotely play or whether they need to own the same game or not. During the Xbox reveal event, Microsoft unveiled group Skype calls using the Xbox One's improved Kinect sensor.
Maybe your lazy friends won't even have to have your Disc to try out your nifty new games. Maybe they won't even need an Xbox One, but I doubt that.

I almost hate to add yet another reason I like the Xbox Controller over the PS3's but the reason the bumper buttons are better on the Xbox controller is that they wrap around to the sides more than the Dual Shock. What this allows you to do is just barely rotate your index finger in, while your finger is still on the trigger, to activate the RB or LB buttons. It's a lot more fluid motion and you don't need to take your fingers off the triggers to do it.

Looking at the PS4 and Xbox One controllers, it looks like this will still be the case. The PS4 bumper buttons look a little bigger but still not placed as well compared to the Xbox controller.

Here's a pretty good video giving an up close look at the new Xbox Controller. Some guy, with incredibly bad teeth, says the only thing about the new Xbox controller he doesn't like are the bumper buttons so that caught my attention:

http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/05/21/xb ... ions-video

The bumpers look placed well for how I used them. As with both controllers, can only know after actually getting to use them. The 4 separate rumbles built into the Xbox controllers sound like it's more than just a gimmick. Some of the isolated feedback sounds like it will be pretty cool.

Something else they stole from PS4. Minus the Skype part. Sony really screwed up with announcing their console months before Microsoft.

It is really interesting to watch Microsoft product after Microsoft product fail so stupendously. I remember when their brand actually represented something other than shame and incompetence. This shit box is going to going down as one of the biggest failures in history. Sony must be throwing huge parties every night in Steve Ballmer's honor. $60 to activate a game? Winnow some people pay for their software and saving $5 or $10 is important to them. Most people also have friends they share their games with when they enjoy them. My family has 3 xbox 360s and we move discs around and play them on different profiles. I'm not paying fucking Microsoft money for that "privilege"

The always on bullshit can kiss my ass as well. MS says it doesn't need a constant connection but spot checks every hour or so and boots you out if it can't connect. That is literally the same thing as requiring it to be always on. It actually sounds even more inconvenient.

I have never seen a company so consistently miss the point. It is almost as if they are purposely sabotaging themselves. It also looks like it was designed by a cold war era Soviet engineer. Who the fuck is going to buy this lump of crap?

The Xbox One console is about as ugly as it can possibly get but I'll be content if it's quiet, cool and reliable since I don't see any of my consoles anyway. I prefer it over a George Foreman humpback design. I don't need my console to look like a grill or spaceship. Hopefully Sony learned from last gen in that area as well.

As for all the bitching and moaning on this thread, it seems to be coming from the same PS3 cheerleaders that thought Sony was going to dominate last generation instead of sucking ass with month long down times on their already crappy online service, crappy controller and incredibly dumb decisions like not including rumble and removing "features" like Linux support. Who knows what you'll end up with Sony. Last gen, they took away more than they gave, and what they gave (rumble) should never have been removed in the first place. At least you get that awesome six axis built in again!

There's a lot of overreacting on this thread with the full details not out yet, and the information that's come out since the introduction has been positive. We also have people like Fairweather thinking the PS4 will perform 50% better than the Xbox One. lol.

Microsoft won last generation and that was it's first real attempt, not including the original Xbox that was more designed to test the market. This generation Xbox will be using Windows 8 kernel at its core which is a huge plus, despite what people think of the metro interface, its a rock solid OS which Sony can't match, along with 300K server farm that Sony can't match. With everyone being connected to the net, yet still whining about internet connections, Microsoft's expertise in OS and online Networks plays a big factor as well. I'm interested in the pricing between the two consoles. That seems to matter for the budget conscious people out there that can afford something more expensive than a Wii.

A lot of the stuff for me boils down to the fact they are doing the shit they are doing, whether it will directly effect me or not. I don't want to see MS in bed with game companies to combat piracy and monitor people when imo they have no business doing it. I don't buy used games, but everyone should be able to and it should cost significantly less to do so. That's the whole point, and game developers are going to see their wish come true only to see it blow up in their faces when it causes game sales to drop, and I'll be laughing at them when it happens for being greedy.

I don't want social media shit integrated into the console, people I game with don't need to know anything about me, and I don't want to advertise my gaming on facebook.

I don't want apps, sports, motion control, internet browsers, facial recognition, voice controls, tv, etc. I want a machine built to play video games at the best quality possible and that's it.

Again, I'm leaning towards going back to pc gaming instead of getting one of the new consoles.

It will be easier than ever to port games between the PC and Xbox/PS3. The graphic I posted earlier shows that the new consoles will be weaker vs PC than they've ever been before hitting the market, and you've got five years to wait for another round so the PC route makes some sense, except if you have non techy friends, then consoles are the way to go so you know exactly what they have will work without issues.

The special features of both consoles aren't going to matter in the long run. When it comes down to it, the quality of games, the way you interact with them (controllers + Kinect/Eye) and how easy it is to play online with your friends will determine how well the new consoles fare. The used game issue has already been addressed. It will be simple to buy a used game originally purchased on physical media, or even give one away on the Xbox One.

It looks like both consoles will have remote play and be able to record videos. While recording game video is just a feature to place a check mark by, remote game play could actually get some use so the way both companies implement that should be interesting. Sony did get some of the multimedia crowd last gen due to the Blu Ray player. This round, it looks like Xbox has that covered. The side panel, multitasking of the Xbox One may be useful to those that only have one monitor and may want to check news/skype/surf/etc briefly while still playing their game or watching their movie/netflix.

I bought both last generation (2 Xbox even though the one red ringed on me), possibly neither this generation, but definitely no Xpox.

Hardware sales are a LOT harder to misrepresent than software, should be an interesting quarter when it's actually released.

Anyone else not buying an Xbox One? Remember, the earlier you say you aren't buying one, the more impressive it is if you stick to it!

----

One thing that would be cool about the remote play offered on Xbox One and on the PS4, would be if they allow you to remote connect to your machine even if no one is currently playing it. Xbox One is instant on and always connected. It would be entirely possible to allow the capability to remote connect to your console and stream any game you have. You could actually do this using a PC, and Microsoft would be better at that than Sony. It's highly doubtful either company would allow playing games remotely from a PC, but it's in the realm of possibility that they might allow you to play any game you own after logging into your account from any console (same home or from anywhere on the globe). I've played Onlive games (Arkham Asylum) and the technology works well. It would perform outstanding on a network in your own home but also be possible remotely. Internet connections will only get better. I can already upstream 20 Mbps which is plenty fast to be playing a remote game in HD. The local console is doing all the work, it just takes the bandwidth to basically stream an HD movie (like Netflix).

While both PS4 and Xbox One will support remote play, I'm interested to see who offers more capability in that area.

Update for the paranoia freaks:
Xbox One's Kinect Can Turn Off, Microsoft Says, Noting Privacy Worries

The state of confusion around the new Xbox One console is such that we're delighted to bring you the news that Microsoft's next console has a power button. What's more: its watchful new Kinect sensor that must be plugged in for the console to run can be turned off.

"It is not always watching or always listening," a rep for Microsoft told me over e-mail while I was trying to nail down some facts for a story about next-gen consoles that ran in yesterday's New York Times.

In the Times article, I reported that Microsoft says the Kinect can be turned off. The entire console can be powered down.

Microsoft: "We are designing the new Kinect with simple, easy methods to customize privacy settings."
Another whine extinguished.

And then there's this:
Xbox One shatters pre-order records at Blockbuster

Xbox One doesn’t have a solid release date or a price yet, and still, a record number of pre-orders for the console have been reported by Blockbuster UK.
Hmm, and that's in th UK where they can't even use the TV features...or can they? Who knows! What I do know is that Xbox One is SHATTERING RECORDS!

Maybe it's just the vocal whining internet people that are throwing out non verified complaints while the rest of the world, even in Europe are SHATTERING RECORDS with pre-orders for the Xbox One even if they can't use the TV features.

I've already shot down 3 or 4 unjustified "concerns" on this thread.

Shattering records! Two things:

A) It's Blockbuster. One retailer. They didn't even give any numbers. Hardly anything to get excited about.
B) Pre-orders != Orders. Especially since the price hasn't even been announced yet.

Oh and one more thing. "RECORDS" is plural and seems to indicate a multitude which doesn't seem to be the case based on what you've posted thus far.

Another moronic post from kyoukan! You must be sniffing glue or huffing gas these days.

Looks to me like more gaming is done on the 360 than the PS3 yet some of you people think Sony makes the "gamer" console. At the same time, I don't see why people whine so much about multimedia and ease of use features when half of the times consoles are used for something other than games. Even more so on that awesome Sony gaming console. Guess the games suck so the "gamers" have to watch vids.

Honestly the PS3 exclusives are ten times better than 360. What does Microsoft have.. Halo? Gears of War? Pfft. Crap.

And not sure where that graph came from.. Nielson is hardly representative of actual usage. I am surprised they are still in business.

I haven't seen a string of dumb-ass posts like this since Searyx was doing the honors of being the forum dolt. Cartalas had more wit than this crap.

Winnow, what your graph fails to mention is the amount of time.

Percentages can be deceiving. The PS3 time playing video games can match exactly the amount of time playing games on the XBOX, but IF people spend EXTRA time watching movies (by extra I mean more time than the xbox), then their playing games percentage goes down.

Just because the PERCENTAGE is lower, doesn't mean playing hours is actually lower. This could mean that by the end of the day, you can sit down and watch a movie with your PS3 instead of switching to your Blu Ray player.

I'll dumb it down for you now.

Xbox
Games = 10 hours..... 67%
Movies = 4 hours...... 27%
Other = 1 hour ........ 7%

PS3
Games = 10 hours..... 45%
Movies = 10 hours..... 45%
Other = 2 hours........ 9%

Do these percentages mean that xbox users spend more time playing games than PS3 users?

Not to mention the 360 doesn't even HAVE Blu-Ray so users don't even have that option. DVDs.. Do they even make those things anymore?

It says DVD/Blu Ray so sounds like it's whatever media the user can shove into their consoles. I suspect the Xbox numbers will go up a bit as some users that chose the PS3 for Blu Ray migrate back to Xbox.

Lynks, I understand what you're saying but I'll help you understand:

here's where you've got some explaining to do:
Finally, Nielsen reported the average hours consumers spent using each system. The Xbox 360 topped the list with 4.9 hours of use per week, with the PS3 behind at 4.1 hours per week. The Wii was the least used of the bunch, averaging just 1.4 hours per week.
good luck with your number twisting!

That's why I asked for those numbers you just gave.

I was simply giving you an example on how a graph with nothing but percentages doesn't actually show any real information.

Glad I could clear things up. So now we know that the PS3 is used less overall and less for gaming than the 360 while multimedia consumption is still an important part of both consoles so it makes no sense why people complain about Microsoft supporting more multimedia friendly features.

The majority of the whining I've seen is the complaints about how much TV, Kinect, etc were emphasized in the "Reveal" event. Microsoft stated clearly before the event that they were reserving all the gaming info for E3. Considering their competition's console is used more for multimedia than actual gaming, it knid of makes sense they emphasize he new console's capabilities in that area to gain some of those customers. Xbox is already used more for gaming so it can't hurt to take away some of the PS3 users in that area.

With the best controller and best online capabilities already in place for Xbox and the hardware/multimedia specs out of the way, Microsoft will be able to focus mainly on games games and more games at E3 as it should be while Sony still has to deal with all the explaining of their console hardware specs.

If Sony would have had a reveal like that you'd be all over them non-stop with every post. I find it funny how you're basically giving MS a free pass on how shitty their event really was and built no excitement whatsoever. Unless you like talking to your TV. Or web browsing while watching TV. Or you're a diehard Call of Duty fan who must have the DLC a month before others get it.

The reveal presentation was pretty crappy and the box itself looks hideous. The event served its purpose by getting the boring stuff (for gamers at least) out of the way.

I'll assume that the people complaining didn't see the comments made by Microsoft before the event stating that they would be holding off the gaming info until E3.

Maybe some more helpful info:

http://www.polygon.com/2013/5/29/437539 ... one-titles
Microsoft has $1 billion to invest in exclusive Xbox One titles

Microsoft will invest roughly $1 billion for the development of exclusive titles for its newly revealed Xbox One console, Official Xbox Magazine reports in an interview with the game company's Don Mattrick and Phil Spencer.

Responding to accusations that Microsoft turned its back on its core audience with the reveal of the new general entertainment console, Mattrick stated the company is planning a number of gamer-centric exclusives and deals.

"We just ran through our [release slate] and counted the number of exclusives, and looked at the amount of money that we're spending and the deals that we have, exclusive windows and [things to create differentiation]," he said.

"I think, candidly, people are way, way under-indexing how hard we're punching."

Microsoft previously stated it has 15 Xbox One exclusives on the cards for the first year of the console, including eight new IP.

Microsoft attempting to explain why the Xbox One looks they way it does.

http://youtu.be/1BlhvX0D6ow

Everyone in the video should be fired immediately.

Controller and Kinect are fine but there's no convincing me that the two shoebox, multi gloss/matte finish look of the console is anything close to ideal or would have come out on top of any kind of vote outside of the kooks that should lose their jobs over it.

It can be quiet and have lots of vents without the thrown together look to it.

Hopefully it will take 15 minutes to find your games passed microsoft's loud, obnoxious streaming video ads and giant banners begging people to sign up for xbox live gold. I really love looking for my games buried under 20 menus.

6:17 is apparently how long it takes hack designers to explain why they chose to make a giant, ugly rectangle instead of something I would not be ashamed to put in my living room.

However, the new Kinect could bring with it new privacy policies, something Microsoft officials continue to decline to comment about in the lead up to the annual E3 video game conference. In the vacuum of fact created by Microsoft's decision to go silent on the topic, internet sleuths dug up a pair of troubling patents filed by Microsoft over the past 12 months. One is for a device adjusting the rental price of a movie based on the number of people in your living room. The other would reward users for watching advertisements. It's unclear if either patents would be used for the Xbox One, because Microsoft has declined to comment about them.
Rental price based on the number of people in the loving room! Have fun with your new overlord. Not sure why anyone would want that creepy Kinect watching them and gathering data.
With a clear, public-facing privacy policy and user agreement still lacking, it remains unclear whether Microsoft's innovative new console is designed with consumers in mind or as the ultimate gatekeeper for an entertainment conglomerate.
My guess is the latter.
