Star Wars The Old Republic Coordination Station

Post by kyoukan »

Whoever is going to be playing TOR when it comes out, we should coordinate what server to play on.

I'm going to be Empire. I am not sure what server yet because I don't have my early access yet. Will update later when I do!

Think I'll initially play with some work friends...no idea on server info yet.

Rubat Crystal - Republic
Pyrella - Illusionist - Leader of Ixtlan on Antonia Bayle

if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?

Aren't they doing kind of a "slow roll out" with this game so far? I mean, it's bound to fill out soon enough, right? Are there server population figures that let people know which are busy and what servers need to be filled out?

Perhaps Star Wars needs it's own forum?!? (or does that usually kill a game off based on past history? lol) We seem to have a lot of (remaining) VVers playing!

Today, we invited people who had pre-ordered up to the very beginning of October (roughly). Tomorrow, we're going to be inviting the same number of people again; that will take us up to the last week or so of November. On Friday, we'll be inviting even more, and we'll give you an update on that tomorrow.

You'll see more servers coming online tomorrow, and almost certainly there will be some queuing. That was always expected. As a reminder, our plan here is to maintain healthy server populations post launch, and during the excitement of launch that will mean queues. That said, we'll be working hard to keep those queues reasonable.
Should be interesting to see how the server populations turn out. I agree that they shouldn't go overboard on servers since there always seems to be cut backs later.

Agreed. I keep waiting for the story to fall off and drop me into grind, quest hub to quest hub to level cap to bored. It just gets better. :)

My Sorceror is 17 now (Mask of Nihilus server, Coho)

I created a character on Rubet Crystal (Canelek, 10 Sith Marauder) as well...slightly less queue there (well, none yet).

damned storylines! It has already been hard to find a "stopping point" to log off as I get sucked into wanting to know how it advances. This has to be one of the things I like most in this game vs prior MMOs.

I have a 22ish BH named Boog on Canderous Ordo that I have been playing most, as well as some Republic scum on The Harbinger.

Yeah having a main storyline to play out for every class was a good idea. This is the first mmorpg I've played where I do not spend roughly half my playing time staring at my XP bar. I don't even pay attention to it, and I keep gaining new levels almost by surprise.

There are some problems with it. Cities are stupidly big and empty and I cringe every time I think about the hackneyed, terribly written Bioware romantic sub-plots that I know are coming. I wish there were more races to choose from (cyborgs are not a race you idiots). It is easy to overlook a lot of that though.

Looks like servers are down until 11CST. 9PM for people who live in non-primative regions. :)

Side note: 40K for speeder bike training, which sucks considering all the ship upgrades, crew tradeskills and not knowing what anything is worth on the market...

Made a republic trooper (Zhulka) on rubat crystal last night, likely not a permanent home. 20 minute impression is "pretty cool".

*Edit - is there a way to make the NPC interactions just text? They kind of suck after the first couple

The first test of how Bioware handles bugs and shit is upon them. Guild and party chat are broken for many people, and no official answer is out yet. Merry Sithmas, hope Darth Klaus brought you a Vent server.

Weekend Confirmed (hosted by one person from the original 1UP Yours podcast) has been steadily going downhill. In fact, it has outright sucked the past few episodes. I might try Bombcast again although the original reason I didn't like it was the one guy who thinks screaming things is a good thing or made it more important. Hopefully that guy has calmed down. I recall them wasting about ten minutes at the beginning of the show talking about their private lives each week which was also a complete waste.

The original 1UP Podcast had the best group of people. With Weekend Confirmed, if there's a female guest, you may as well just turn it off as the males in the podcast completely lose control. Rebel FM, which from time to time had been a decent podcast, is also pretty much shit as they spend the second half of the show answering emails about girlfriend relationship issues which was comical to listen to one time at them attempting to be psychiatrists but on a weekly basis is just sad. Weekend confirmed also insists on playing a remix made by a podcast listener that autotunes things said by them in the previous podcast. I can't think of anyone that wants to hear themselves autotuned every week except for the hosts themselves but they don't get it and keep doing it. That, in addition to the weekly crap indy song they play pretty much cuts the usefulness of the podcast in half as you turn it off as soon as they come to the break with the auto tunes and lame music.

Considering the above, I guess Bombcast is worth another shot.

Edit: corrected name for podcast to Rebel FM (not Rebel Yell!)

frogpants studio has a new version of The Instance for TOR. Updated weekly. 1-2hr shows. Several regular segments. 2 regular hosts and one guest host each week. Good stuff overall. The Instance was one of the few podcasts specific to one game (WoW) that I was able to stand even after leaving the game.

We should just make a gaming podcast thread to avoid derailing this one. I appreciate Giant Bomb in small portions. However, when they hit high notes on the show, they are pretty freaking high. I really like the fact that they have 2-3 hour long podcasts and it's basically just 4 gaming dudes sitting around talking much like my friends and I would. Yes, real life and things play into that in a big way for me. It's a good mix of personalities and you can tell they get along very well together. They're also not trying to sell a game and never put anything on a pedestal. There are also enough different tastes that I feel like I get a good variety of justified opinions. Also, those guys play A LOT of games. However, they have some gaps in their reviews and gamer opinions. For instance, I don't think I've ever heard them talk about a sports game, ever (unless it's wrestling or UFC). They just don't seem to care about that genre. They also seem either uninterested in MMOs in general or are just burnt out. Luckily, they say all that up front and include their personal reasons as they discuss stuff they may have a prejudice towards. My favorite part of the podcast is the beginning "Whatcha Been Playin'" at the very beginning. I like it when you can tell they are really excited about a game they're playing and hearing them explain the basics to the others. You can just tell they're enjoying themselves. I usually stop listening around emails. I also dislike excessive amounts of industry insider talk that so many gaming podcasts get into. Giant Bomb has just enough. They're also pretty good about spoilers.

They have great special episodes too, like E3, Blizzcon, Pax, ect. I absolutely love their Game of the Year podcasts. This year's debate is heating up already!

Oddly, I just listened to The Instance yesterday for the first time ever. I plan on listening to a couple more of theirs today.

Was interested in this but mainly for the online play.. at the moment I can't find it for less than ~$55 or so. I'll wait until they drop it down. $60 + subscription is more than I'm going to pay for an online game when several others are free (EQ in March!).

Yeah, that's a shitload of customers. Does anyone here still play? How are the server populations? Have they rolled out any new content since launch? What is end game like? I will try it once it's free to play but I have no intention of leaving WoW.

Server populations are too low. To be fair, they started out with a shitload of servers to aviod too long queues, but they REALLY need to merge some.
They have added new content a few times, and a world even that ran for a few weeks.
End game is kinda low at the moment, there are really only 3 Operations and a few world bosses. So you can do that, or you can pvp :)

I'm honestly surprised by the news. The game had decent press and good opening numbers. I figured it would carve out a nice sized niche for itself. But after it came out, it completely fell off the radar. The only things I read about it was from haters or fanbois, so I couldn't get a good read of the truth. Honestly, I heard more positive impressions and longer talk about Rift. That's another one that had a lot of talk and then it just stopped and fell into the abyss as well.

It just isn't fun to play. A game needs more immersion than "click this and succeed," regardless of the droid / falcon / jedi effect.

The problem is they have a 5:1 server ratio, and despite their emphasis on levelling your social rank for cool stuff, it is almost impossible to get a group on 80% of the servers. The server I started my dudes on is a total wasteland. No one plays on it and there are no tools to move your guys to another server, and no talk from EA about merging servers because they are too arrogant.

People don't appreciate the fact that 1.2 million dudes playing an average of probably about 13 bucks a month is serious fucking money though. A lot of AAA games don't come close to the amount of money this game has and will make.
