Also being directed by Joss Whedon. Pretty fucking awesome. In a surprise wrap to the event's film panels, Marvel chief Kevin Feige called out the A-list cast of their mega comic book adaption, Avengers, due in 2012. The film, which will entwine the stories of Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow and others, has been a dream film most Comic-Conners thought impossible because of Hollywood egos and competing studio rights.
So when Feige called the entire A-list cast to the stage —Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) Samuel Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Mark Ruffalo (Hulk, a headline unto itself) — the place went nuts.
Game over.

Re: The Avengers
It's like the perfect storm of comic book movies. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye was a stroke of genius. I also greatly approve of Mark Ruffalo as a Banner replacement.
The whole campaign of individual movies converging in one giant blockbuster is the first in motion picture history. It's still 2 years away, yet it's been being built up for the previous 3. The only question is, "Can The Avengers movie possibly live up to the hype"?
I say, yes.

Yup. He's been my pick for Hawkeye for years. Combine his role as a sharpshooting bad-ass in 28 Weeks Later w/ the reckless, arrogant bomb-specialist from Hurt Locker and you have Hawkeye.Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye was a stroke of genius

Re: The Avengers
The choice of heroes for this movie is nothing short of inspired. Every Hero offers a different skill to the group, with a couple of overlaps that are very important. I wish that X-Men First Class had put more thought behind which heroes and villains they chose for the movie.
Anyway, for The Avengers we have:
Tony Stark - Science and Technology. He's also rich, rich, rich.
Iron Man - As far as plot elements and how to get past certain situations or obstacles, Iron Man's suit is likely a godsend for the writers. It can be used as either a scalpel or a sledgehammer. Whatever the scene calls for, Iron Man is easily the most versatile of the group.
Spruce Manner- Biology and other advanced sciences
Hulk - Unequalled strength, rage, and invulnerability, but uncontrollable(?) and is basically a monster. Hulk is the wild card of the group.
Black Widow, Hawkeye, and possibly Capt America - Espionage and stealth. Hawkeye and Black Widow are also the bonds with SHEILD. I think that all 3of their admittedly un-"super" skills are essential to a well rounded Avengers team.
Thor - Power with severe lack of subtlety or real understanding of our world, brash and quick to anger. I explain to people who do not know the character that he's like Superman but with no real weakness and he can also control the weather.
Iron Man and Thor - Flight. A very important element in super hero movies!
Captain America - Leadership. He's the only person capable of stringing together this rag tag group of heroes and having them work together with a focused goal.
Also, if you look at the team, it has a great mixture of personalities. Hulk is the result of an experiment gone wrong, Capt America is the result of an experiment gone right, and Thor is truly the only "super" hero in the group. Everyone else is simply human. I think it makes for a great dynamic.
The question is, who the fuck are they fighting? What enemy or force is going to allow the use of every team member's skills as outlined above? What enemy will require the use of the human stealth and espionage one scene, then the godlike powers of Thor and Hulk in the next? How can you marginalize the awesome power of Thor/Hulk against an enemy and still show Hawkeye or Black Widow as somehow worthwhile in that same battle? Anyone that reads comics knows that situations happen all the time that where "lesser" characters prove their worth. I'm sure the movie will be no different.
If you watch the movies individually (Hulk 2, Iron Man 1 and 2, Thor, and surely the upcoming Capt America movie), it is still very hard to imagine them all together in the same movie. That is a whole lot of awesome to be jammed together in one movie. It will likely break my nerd meter for the foreseeable future.
It's also interesting as a cinephile such as myself to see a first in movie history. The Avengers will be the ultimate destination of 5 different movies built up over 5-6 years, culminating in a single film bringing all of the separate characters from separate franchises together in one film. It's quite an amazing feat of foresight, marketing, licensing, and shared vision that is allowing this to happen. It just so happens it is also a film directly aimed at me personally due to my history of loving comics as a child. It is absolutely fucking epic that this movie is even taking place.
What else needs to be said?

Loki will be in the avengers movie too. Some people were saying Thanos too but the Skrulls seems like the more obvious choice.

Re: The Avengers
I've heard several different rumors. No word yet on any of them as solid. Everything is just rumors, which when you think about the current spoiler filled movie culture, is nothing less than amazing.Dregor Thule wrote:Word is that they'll be fighting Skrulls.
Skrulls - Hard to believe they would bring this element into their established universe (aliens). Well, technically Thor is an alien The skrulls would be a great villain that would require the use of all the different skills in the Avengers team. You have to admit, an alien invasion type event would be a great reason to assemble the might of The Avengers! It's hard to think of anything else epic enough to warrant them all working together in the established movie universe.
Loki - Him using the Cosmic Cube and bringing the Frost Giants in to attack earth (again) is one rumor that has gained traction.
Loki/Hulk - Loki uses the Hulk as a weapon, much like in the Avengers #1 comic. This plot was also used in the Avengers animated movie (pretty sure, it's been awhile), but the skrulls were involved, not Loki.
I don't really like the "Hulk as weapon" plot device, but goddamn it would be cool to see Thor and him rumble on the big screen!
The big thing is that we have not heard of anyone being cast as a "villain". Surely that would make the trades. That makes me think CGI villains like the frost giants or possibly skrulls, or there're going to use the Loki/Hulk scenario.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading years ago that (for whatever reason) the name "Bruce Banner" was deemed unacceptable for the masses, so they changed it to David Banner for the Hulk TV show. I'm not arguing that Bruce is not correct (it is totally correct), just providing a piece of trivia.

Re: The Avengers
My completely unfounded speculation is that Loki will use an organization like AIM or Hydra to accesses the cosmic cube some time in the first movie (towards the end). Activating it sends out a huge energy signature across the universe. This is picked up by a superior alien race, such as Kree, Skrulls, or Thanos. They come to claim it.
I think it'd be great if Kree came first during the 2nd movie. Avengers fight them to a stand-still and then learn that the Kree only wanted to have control of the cube to keep it from an even greater threat. SHIELD and Kree forces are already decimated at this point...enter Skrulls, Thanos or Annihilus.
Perhaps introduce the Kree hero Marhl-Vahl (Captain Marvel) who leads the Kree against earth in the 2nd film, then ends up joining the Avengers against the true threat in the finale.
We'd have The Avengers w/ Captain Marvel leading the leftover forces of Earth, Asgard, and Kree vs. Thanos/Annihilus/Skrulls to protect the entire universe. Could it get more epic than that?
This is Marvel's big trilogy, why not make it epic and why not bring in Captain MARVEL for it's finale (and of course he sacrifices himself in the end).
Ultimate Mahr-Vehl for reference(art by Sylvus' cousin!):

The ultimate one is actually based on the original one from when he's working against Earth:
He was first sent as a Kree spy with that uniform. There's a whole weird story to why he gets the more human looking form and costume, but it happens after he changes allegiance to help Earth. Maybe they could adapt both for a movie, if they ever bring him to the big screen.

um, that Captain Headgear doesn't look promising. They should have stuck with the WW2 or Ultimate Cap look.
They look like kids or COS players.
Cheesy
Joss Whedon will make sure this movie is great but I'm not impressed with the costumes so far.
Re: The Avengers
The costumes look dull and fake because they are good materials to enhance with CGI in post processing. The costumes for any other Marvel movie in the last 10 years don't look any different.
Re: The Avengers
I can understand that for the materials but that doesn't explain the padded thing that's on top of Captain America's head. I know the miracles of CGI and am looking forward to seeing the end result. Hoping it all turns out well.kyoukan wrote:The costumes look dull and fake because they are good materials to enhance with CGI in post processing. I don't care if Firefly, Serenity, and Dr. Horrible were 'unsuccessful', if that means they didn't rake in the dough. I enjoyed all three of those projects immensely, and respect him for pushing forward as a nerd even if it would be easier to make another cop or crime scene show.

I'd take 10 failed Joss Whedon shows over a 25 million dollar single episode Tera Nova Spielberg craptastic show.
Whedon doesn't bend to the will of those that want cookie cutter crap movies designed to sell...and yet he still finds work because there are still some decision makers that thankfully appreciate quality over dollars and will keep giving him a chance whether his efforts are successful or not.

He's even tried (and failed) fan-funding for some of his projects.
I'll admit he does have a knack for writing interesting dialog but I think he really needs to stay away from the directors chair.
I don't doubt that Avengers will be anything but a blockbuster but mainly because he hasn't been given the freedom to 'whedon' it. Marvel hopefully has him on a short leash.

Not to pick old nits, but Dr. Horrible was very successful. Re: The Avengers
My 4 year old daughter went nuts when she saw the Hulk and Ironman (her favorite superhero) together on the same screen.
It looks so great. Marvel is doing it right.

Re: The Avengers
Loki was simply exiled where he was probably rescued by aliens (Kree/Skrull/Other) between Thor and the Avengers movie.
Also, Thor and Loki are both Gods so they probably don't need oxygen like other people.
