Alice - Madness Returns (360, PS3, PC)

Post by Winnow »

I grabbed a few 360 games off the net this weekend and this one is the most interesting.

Image

It's based off of Alice in Wonderland but is a more disturbed version.

There was an original game put out 10+ years back that I never heard of or played.

Overall presentation:

Creepy. The UI is great, the visuals are great. The game play is fun. I'm really not big on Alice in Wonderland. Never liked the story or the films. It takes a lot to get me to even try a game based off of something I don't like, and it says a lot when I end up liking the game.

Main Character

Alice is pretty fucked up. This history tells of her being badly burned in a fire where the rest of her family died. She spends 10 years in a mental institution which, most people know, were horrible in the 1800's. She's subjected to various treatments, most of which screw up her mind more. This story/game picks up ten years after the original. Alice has been released from the mental hospital and is getting therapy from a shrink. You start the game in London in the 1870's. The world is beautiful in a creepy sort of way. The kids and characters all look creepy. While you spend some time in the "real" world, it doesn't take long before you head to Wonderland.

Environment

Freaky cool. As soon as I splashed down in Wonderland, I took quite awhile looking around at the scenery. I spent 20 minutes getting through a part of the game you could finish in 5. Good sign. The music is very well done, adding to the game's strangeness.

Traveling/Movement

I really like how Alive moves around. You've got your standard walk/run. She has a very liberal jump which can be turned into a double jump with an extra tap of the button to allow Alice to make it pretty far across places. You can also jump and then hit and hold the jump button to let Alice glide farther if she's heading to a lower location. (I guess her dress acts like a parachute). The game also has mushroom pads that launch Alice up in the air after which you can slightly move her one way or the other to reach a ledge, etc or glide her somewhere. There's also water/steal spouts that Alice can jump on and then remain on as you turn her, then jump/glide to your destination. Alice also has a "sprint" button that quickly moves her a short distance in a poof of flowers, best used for evading mobs.

These movement options all feel fluid and you get the sense of ability instead of restriction when moving about. It's fun to move around in the game.

Weapons

Image

Alice has a number of weapons and the game is violent. Her Vorpal Blade is nasty up close.

Image

The Pepper Grinder is your ranged weapon. You can click the RS to lock onto targets. There's no ammo but there is a cool down so you can't continuously unload on mobs. Cool down is short but just enough to make you use strategy.

Image

The Hobby Horse is used for heavy damage up close

The Teapot Cannon is used for heavy ranged damage.

There's also Clockwork Bombs.

You don't get all these in the beginning. You get your Vorpal Blade first and pretty quickly your Pepper Grinder.

Weapons can be upgraded. You collect teeth as you play which are used as currency to upgrade your weapons.

Shrink

Alice can shrink at any time using the left bumper. Besides using this to get into small places, it can be used in combat to as part of dodge (as can her quick sprint right bumper) When Alive is shrunk, she is able to see things that are normally invisible. Messages, jumping platforms, etc. Shrinking and unshrinking is instant and fun to use as well.

Apparently Alice can grow as well but I haven't experienced that.

The game has anywhere from Easy mode to Nightmare mode so there's something for all skill levels.

The game options/menus are well done. Alice gets new dresses as you progress which you can pick from if you feel like it or let the game choose. They are purely for aesthetic purposes so its up to you. No panty shots as far as I can tell. While Alice's dress is constantly blowing up, underneath is a black void...which is another good sign that the game is good if I'm still playing! Alice's hair is really cool in the game. It flows nicely with movement, adding the the nice look of the game.

There are various things you can collect if you are a completionist.

I can't recommend paying full price for just about any game unless it's got some sort of fantastic online action that you like. I can say without hesitation that this game is worth checking out at some point unless you aren't big on violence and insanity. It's a nice mix of action/platforming with a creative story and look.

Here's a 2 minute video of in game footage showing mostly combat so you can see what it's like. It's in slow motion so you can get a better look at things:

As you can see from the video, Alice, Madness Returns, is a very stylish game and Alice is a one girl wrecking machine.

This preview video will give you a good idea of how the game looks as well:

Watch in 720p of course!

I played and finishef the first one on PC back in the day. I liked Giant Bomb's quick look, but as usual I'm drowning in games so will await a large price drop before I purchase this one.

It's going to be a very, very busy season for video gamers this year. Plenty of games fall through the cracks and I'm betting this will be one of them.

This game is huge. I'm still on chapter 1 (out of 5 chapters)

Considering how amazing the art is in this game, I'm impressed at how long it is. I've been playing for quite awhile and it says I'm 4% done....4! And this isn't some collection completion percentage. I've been constantly going through new areas that are all completely different looking.

I keep checking my to see if I've finished the first chapter and it looks like I'm halfway done with it.

BTW, I grabbed a 184 page Art book (not strategy book...purely art and discussion of the design) of this game which shows the incredible amount of detail and thought they but into this game. I'll post a link or some samples later.

The game is very forgiving if you fail a jump or die from a mob. You typically get reset back to the last "checkpoint" that typically isn't too far back. And by not too far back, I mean, sometimes you're reset to the place you started your jump from, sometimes maybe a minute back worth of ground to cover. The focus is more on the adventure than in frustrating you. There are no death penalties and you keep the teeth you collected. One thing that can be frustrating is that there are no save points. When you quit you get reset to a major break point in the story which is typically the last load screen and can be pretty far back...so I suggest if you're thinking of taking a break from the game, do it after a load screen or you'll lose progression from that point on.

Scratch that!

Fuck these three faced bastards!

I had a bitch of a time getting by what amounted to a "boss" fight. It wasn't a boss with a single boss but the Menacing Ruins are hard enough on their own. This fight threw in three hives which keep spawning flying thingies that attack you until you take out the hive. Along with those, you had a Tea Pot which isn't too hard by itself if you have time to focus on when it's eye is open to pepper it but you also have five or six mini single face ruins as well.

To make this a more difficult situation. One of the harder platforming sequences is right before it and when you succeed with that, you land right in the middle of all these mobs. If you fail the platforming part you are reset to right before it but if you fail the big fight, you get reset to the beginning of the room "Engine Room". Now, I'm playing on easy and this kicked my ass multiple times. I don't know what medium, hard and nightmare add to this mix but it's going to be a challenge for sure.

I'm going to spoiler tag my comments on strategy for the Engine Room final fight
[Show]
Right before the fight, you need to get past some presses that will smash you from above and then you need to triple jump float by two presses trying to squash you from the sides. If you make it past the two side presses and float to the ground, all the mobs mentioned above will spawn. I found that if you almost but don't quit make it to the ground, you get close enough to spawn all the mobs. You die from falling and then need to redo the presses part but the mobs remain spawned...right before the side presses, you can go into target mode and use your Pepper Gun to take out one of the hives and a couple of the mini Ruin thingies. This will help one you float down to the bottom. There will still be two hives and 4 or so mini Ruins ass well as the Tea Pot and Menacing Ruin but it give you a headstart.

As for the Menacing Ruin, after you've cleared everything else while constantly using the right bumper sprint button to keep moving around to avoid major damage, you need to use the umbrella to deflect its ranged fireballs. I found blocking the first ball, dodging the second and then blocking the third works best. The fireballs will deflect and hit the Menacing Ruin doing damage. Your clockwork bombs will also help damage it. After awhile the Menacing Ruin gets pissed off and starts charging you. At this point you can dodge it and then go to town with your Vorpal Blade, tearing it up as it pauses for a second after the charge. the key is taking out everything else before focusing on the Menacing Ruin.
It was a relief to get by that fight and I've since figured out how to take down the Menacing Ruins.

The completion meter jumped to 20% after the first chapter. I can see that I missed quite a few bottles, snouts, and an entire mini game, as well as a few memories in chapter one. just the first chapter alone had a variety of outdoor and indoor environments. The Mad Hatters domain had a very steampunkish vibe to it.

This game has gotten an initial bad review. They're nuts. It was PS3 Magazine giving it a 5/10...not surprising since its not an exclusive PS3 game! It looks like the reviewer isn't a big fan of platforming which is a blast in this game. They probably also liked First Class and wouldn't recognize originality of it punched them in the face. User review so far is at 9.5. I can see some young kids or people that are impatient having issues. Anyone that doesn't appreciate all the effort that went into making the amazing environments. This game isn't designed to blast through at warp speed.

More reviews should be released tomorrow.

Here's the Art Book for perusing:

If you just want to take a quick look at the style, I posted it as a gallery on my website:

Text is a bit hard to read unless you maximize the images though.

Since there's a lot of text, I created a PDF if you want to view it like a book, maximized on your screen:

American McGee games have always been nice to look at but pretty awful to play... The original Alice being the only exception.

I had no interest in Grimm so I never picked it up but it got pretty mediocre reviews.
Bad Day L.A. had a great concept and the cel shaded visuals were sweet... but the game was fucking terrible.
Scrapland also had great visuals but the game itself was dull.

This game is getting poor reviews with a 65 rating. I'm having a blast in the game. The platforming is entertaining in a very creative world. The combat isn't supposed to rival Street Fighter.

I won't say this game is for everyone. It may be a love or hate kind of thing. The environments, sound, etc are all excellent and the puzzle/platforming is great. In Chapter two I've noticed several routes you can take around the areas. It's easy to miss a lot of things and multiple ways to get through areas.

I'd rate this game a 9/10 but then again, I rated the unoriginal First Class 3/10 so opinions definitely vary!

As Winnow said, this game is pretty fucking entertaining. It is quite beautiful and smooth. I've heard complaints as well but I have had no wimpy control issues. I've only played for about an hour, but it really is quite fun!

Oh, and there is a slight Edward Gorey tinge to the whole thing. Quite creepy/pretty/comical.

Glad you're enjoying it : )

If you're sick of all games looking the same, try Alice, it's a visual feast with changing environments and fun platforming to boot. The game is also long. You get your money's worth, even more so as the usual game price cuts factor in.

Offtopic and not related to this game at all.. But I let my PS Magazine subscription run out basically for that reason. They seem to rate a lot, but not all!, PS3 exclusive games an 8 or above. And their covers which tout "World Exclusive!" on shit that has already appeared in Xbox Magazine or Game Informer was laughable. I initially got the subscription for $5 last year but with XBM and GI I really couldn't see a need to resubscribe to PSM especially for $18. Even at $5 I would have had to think twice about it.

Best Buy has this for $12 (at least the PS3 version, I didn't check others) so I decided to order it. I doubt I will have any time to play it in the near future but with $12 being less than a full PSN/XBL game, which usually run $15, I don't see how you can go wrong.

It's things like this why I seldom buy things Day 1 anymore. 6 months later it's already $48 cheaper than when it was released. It pays to wait!

It is a pretty damn fun game. Of course, in the tradition of, well, being me, it was thrust aside for a differnet game, and so forth...now all console games on hold until I get tired of SWTOR!
