Re: PSN is down.. Could be 2 days till full service is restored
Actually, that's exactly what I did since the card I used to have on file had expired. Registered a new card and all it asked me was name, # and expiration date. So, believe what you wish but I'm speaking from a personal experience within the last 48 hours or so.miir wrote:Your amazon account is on a secure server.Siji wrote:As a perfect example, Amazon does not require CVV2 as I discovered last night. Not sure how much larger an example I could provide.
The majority of electronic POS systems only require the CVV2 when registering a new credit card to an account on a secure server. Few require it for every transaction.
Try adding different credit card information to your Amazon.com account and I guarantee that you will be asked the the CVV2.
I don't claim to know how POS systems work, nor did I debate how they work. I'm describing a personal experience on one of the worlds largest online retailers. Feel free to google, try it yourself or whatever else you'd like to do to prove me wrong because quite honestly I don't give a flying fuck. It didn't ask me for the information, hence my posting as an example. Even discounting this example, there's plenty of others out there.miir wrote:Again, if you don't really understand how electronic POS systems work, you should probably stop posting shit that makes you look so ignorant.

...Following up on this morning's news that Sony Online Entertainment servers were offline across the board, Sony Online Entertainment announced that it has lost 12,700 customer credit card numbers as the result of an attack, and roughly 24.6 million accounts may have been breached.
The company took SOE servers offline after learning of the attack last evening, and today detailed the unfortunate results: "approximately 12,700 non-US credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain" were lost, apparently from "an outdated database from 2007." Of the 12,700 total, 4,300 are alleged to be from Japan, while the remainder come from the aforementioned four European countries.
Furthermore, Sony ties today's announcement directly to the recent attacks on PlayStation Network and Qriocity, with Sony saying SOE customer information was stolen on either April 16 or April 17. Sony has repeatedly stated that its PSN servers and SOE servers are not part of the same network, so it remains unclear just how these two attacks are tied together.

Sony is too important to testify...Sony Corp., under scrutiny over delays in warning 77 million customers that their personal information may have been stolen, declined to testify at a U.S. House hearing on data theft, according to a lawmaker’s aide.
The company told lawmakers it was unable to appear because of an ongoing investigation into the intrusion, Ken Johnson, a spokesman for Representative Mary Bono Mack, a California Republican, said today in an interview.
Sony alerted customers of a breach in its PlayStation Network and Qriocity services on April 26, six days after shutting them down. The Tokyo-based company apologized for the breach today and said it is cooperating with authorities including the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation to track down the intruder.

Re: PSN is down.. Could be 2 days till full service is restored
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/sony-ceo-apolo ... 57155.htmlTOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer apologized to users of its PlayStation Network and other online services, breaking his silence on the biggest Internet security break-in ever.
Stringer's comments, which did not specify when services would resume, come after criticism of his leadership since Sony revealed hackers had compromised the data of more than 100 million accounts used for accessing games and music over the Internet.
"As a company we - and I - apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack," Stringer said on Sony's U.S. PlayStation blog late on Thursday.
The incident may prove to be a significant setback for a company looking to recover after being outmaneuvered by Apple in portable music and Samsung Electronics in flat-screen TVs and which faces a tough fight in video games with Nintendo and Microsoft.
One analyst said security concerns could weigh on sales of Sony's gadgets and hurt growth prospects for its network services.
"There is a real concern that trust in Sony's business will decline," Kota Ezawa, analyst at Citigroup Global Markets Japan, wrote in a note ahead of the comments from Stringer.
"The network business itself still only makes a small direct contribution to earnings, but we see a potential drop in hardware sales as a concern."
But Peter Walshe, senior director at global brands research agency Millward Brown, said the main Sony brand should bounce back, although PlayStation specifically might suffer.
"The parent brand is likely to be more resilient," he told Reuters by telephone. "Sony is one of the most trusted brands in the world, while Sony PlayStation has quite a low trust score to begin with."
"People may shout: 'I'm never going to buy Sony again,' but in our experience that doesn't tend to happen."
The Internet breaches sparked thousands of comments on the official PlayStation fan page on Facebook and on its blog, some of them from users who said they would switch to Microsoft's Xbox Live games network.
Although video game hardware and software sales have declined globally, the PlayStation Network is a key initiative for the electronics company.
On Friday, Sony shares ended 2.3 percent lower in a broader market down 1.5 percent, extending its total losses to about 6 percent since it revealed the breach. The Nikkei is up around 3 percent over the same period.
Sony issued its first warning on the break-in a week after it detected a problem with the network on April 19, infuriating many PlayStation users around the world. Sony said it needed time to work out the extent of the damage.
WHY THE DELAY?
"I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It's a fair question," Stringer said.
"I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had - or had not - been taken."
Stringer said Sony would restore network services "in the coming days," but gave no date.
"That's all well and good, but when exactly is the PSN going to be back up? "Coming Days" could be tomorrow or it could be weeks from now," a user called Morac said on the PlayStation blog.
Sony's handling of a massive Internet security breach is becoming a public relations nightmare reminiscent of Toyota Motor's bungled response to a series of vehicle recalls last year, fuelling criticism of Japan Inc's standards of disclosure.
"The initial response was definitely slow," said Yasuyuki Katagi, president of Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide (Japan).
He said Japanese firms were used to keeping problems quiet because local customers would assume they were taking steps to fix things.
"However, this doesn't apply when a problem extends to the global business environment," Katagi added.
In the United States, several members of Congress have seized on Sony's breach, in which hackers stole names, addresses and possibly credit card details. One U.S. law firm filed a lawsuit in California on behalf of consumers.
The theft prompted the U.S. Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation to open an investigation and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has subpoenaed Sony entities over the breaches.
"Almost 100 percent of the time, it's the handling of the crisis that creates lasting and negative perceptions rather than the event on its own," said Danny Phan, executive director at public relations firm Pelham Bell Pottinger Asia.
"Keeping your stakeholders in the dark for too long will create deep rooted suspicion and mistrust when the news breaks, potentially severing all positive sentiments previously built over the years."
Sony previously said it would offer some free content, including 30 days of free membership to a premium service to existing users and in some regions pay credit card-renewal fees.
INSURANCE POLICY
Stringer also said the company had launched a $1 million data theft insurance policy for its U.S. PlayStation Network and Qriocity users.
"I know this has been a frustrating time for all of you," Stringer said. "To date, there is no confirmed evidence any credit card or personal information has been misused, and we continue to monitor the situation closely," he said.
Sony's revelation of a second Internet breach on Monday came just a day after it said measures had been put in place to avert another cyberattack like that which hit its PlayStation Network, leading to the theft of information on 77 million user accounts.
The company is looking to its insurers to help pay for its data breach, an amount that one expert estimates could exceed $2 billion, but others said insurers may balk at ponying up that kind of money.
"We have a variety of types of insurance that cover damages. Certain carriers have been put on notice," said Sony spokesman Dan Race.
The hackers have not been identified, but Internet vigilante group Anonymous, which had claimed responsibility for previous attacks on Sony and other corporations, denied it was behind the data theft.
The group's statement came after Sony said Anonymous was indirectly responsible for the attack on the company.
Sony, which is set to report its annual earnings on May 26, has yet to specify the financial effect of the network breach. Tokyo financial markets were closed from Tuesday to Thursday for national holidays.

Linkfail... unless you intended to compare 3m SNE to 6m DJIA.
Since the PSN issues, SNE has lost about 3.5%
It's been creeping slowly down since late Feb and the past 2 weeks haven't seen any variation on that trend.
That shows that stockholders aren't particularly worried.

There'd be more selling but Sony's stockholders probably had their trading accounts hacked and are unable to sell....wait a minute...maybe Sony is behind this hack!

I'm pretty darn the Earthquake/Tsunami might have had something to do with that that drop... idiot.
You see that big dip the week after March 11?
Did you also notice that it's dropped less than $2 since then?
My point is that the PSN issues have had negligible effect on SNE.
I'm not really sure what your point is.

Just some tips on basic chart reading...draw a straight line before the quake to present day:

With Earthquake/Tsunami accounted for, the stock is still heading down, even when taking the highest points along the way. The stock dipped after the quake but it's not the cause...idiot.
Now...if if enter in the Geohot key dates...I'm sure that would account for the entire drop. Day Geohot sued. Day Geohot posts a rap about being sued. Day Anonymous announces they're going to take action...all points along the way downward!
February 12, 2011. Hotz posts a rap video on his YouTube page explaining his side of the case. (It now has 1.8 million views).
February 19, 2011. Hotz starts a blog about the lawsuit.
March 6, 2011. Court approves Sony request to access all the internet protocol addresses of the people who visited GeoHot’s blog to download the jailbreaking tools. (People not happy, stock plummets)
March 23, 2011. Sony claims that Hotz has fled to South America and destroyed evidence. That turns out not to be true, according to Hotz’s attorney.
April 3, 2011. Hacktivist group Anonymous launches a cyber attack against various Sony web sites in an operation called #OpSony in retaliation for Sony’s pursuit of George “GEoHot” Hotz and Graf_Chokolo.
April 11, 2011. Sony settles the PS 3 jailbreaking case with Hotz. Anonymous says it will continue with boycott of Sony on April 16. (stock goes up) (billion dollar market cap impact on the stock)
------
So Sony giving up on their stupid lawsuit is the temporary spike in the stock and then 100 million account leak takes it down again....yes, it's had an impact.

TOKYO—The recent data breach involving Sony Corp.'s online videogame services has knocked more than 6% off the Japanese electronics maker's shares, with some analysts estimating the incident could cost the company over a billion dollars as it takes steps to soothe and protect customers.
What might be more difficult to quantify, though, is the potential impact on Sony's future business prospects: If data security concerns damage Sony's brand image, some say that could undermine the company's efforts to establish a business model that links gadgets to an online network of games, movies and music.
"It could take months for the security woes to settle, and how this may affect consumer confidence in Sony's online services in a long run is harder to assess," said Mizuho Investors Securities analyst Nobuo Kurahashi.
Mr. Kurahashi estimates that the data breach will cost Sony about 100 billion Japanese yen, or $1.25 billion from lost business, various compensation costs and new investments—assuming that no additional security problems emerge. The cyber attacks on Sony in recent weeks involved the theft of personal data that include names, passwords and addresses from accounts on its PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment gaming services. Sony has also said that more than 10 million credit-card numbers may have been compromised.
Sony is scheduled to report earnings for the fiscal year ended March on May 26, later than its usual reporting date before mid-May, to give itself time to gauge the full impact on its businesses of the March 11 natural disasters that sapped the Japanese economy.
Sony spokeswoman Kumie Tanaka said that the company doesn't yet have any estimates of the impact on its earnings from the data breach, as it is still figuring out the overall impact of the cyber-attack.
Sony's online videogame services are at the heart of the company's efforts to differentiate itself at a time when most Japanese consumer electronics makers are struggling to compete against Samsung Electronics Co. and other Asian rivals who can outsell Japanese brands in the global market.
Restoring trust in online services will be essential if Sony continues to push its network business strategy forward, Mr. Kurahashi said.
"Our strategy that places online network at the core of our operations won't change because of this," said Sony's Ms. Tanaka. To continue with that strategy, the company is reinforcing its security systems and making sure that users can access the services without any concerns.
After discovering the attack against its PlayStation Network last month, Sony abruptly shut the online game service on April 20, spurring complaints and outrage from users around the world.
A week later, Sony acknowledged personal information for 77 million customers of the network had been stolen. On Tuesday, the company said hackers may have obtained personal data for customers from another online service, bringing the potential number of compromised accounts to more than 100 million.
On Friday, the Tokyo Stock Exchange had its first trading session after three national holidays, and Sony shares dropped 2.3% to 2,262 yen. Since April 27, when Sony first announced the data breach, the stock has fallen 6.3%, while the Nikkei 225 Stock Average has gained 3.1% over the same period and shares of Panasonic Corp., another Japanese electronics giant, have risen 2.1%.
Barclays Capital analyst Yuji Fujimori estimated in a report published Sunday—before Sony announced on Tuesday that more accounts were compromised—the overall impact of the data breach at up to 220 billion yen, or about $2.74 billion.
Aside from lost revenue due to the suspension of the online services, Sony is covering the costs of reissuing credit cards, reinforcing security systems and offering complimentary access to premium services.
On Thursday, Sony revealed details of a plan to provide its customers with free identity theft prevention services for 12 months. Sony said the prevention service, provided through a company called Debix Inc., will alert Sony customers to unauthorized use of their personal information and a $1 million insurance policy if they become the victims of identity theft.
The immediate cost of dealing with the data breach will also depend on how much support the company receives from authorities and the public, and how quickly the case is solved.
Some are more optimistic on the latter count. Citigroup Global Markets analyst Kota Ezawa estimates that the cost will be less than 100 billion yen, as he expects the case to be mostly resolved in the next week or two.
Mr. Ezawa said that the expected impact on Sony's earnings will likely consist of the costs of investigating; compensation for any misused data, including the insurance policy; the complimentary access to premium services; and additional measures to boost data security. All those costs combined would still likely be less than 100 billion yen, he said.
Still, Mr. Ezawa said there are a few risks that could drive up the cost, such as the possibility of lawsuit and additional cyber attacks from hackers.
Of course the stock will eventually go up. Sony lost close to 10 BILLION dollars of its market cap over the past few months. I think most of the people here that can count without using their fingers would agree that's a big chunk when SNE's market cap now sits at 28 Billion.
Re: PSN is down.. Could be 2 days till full service is restored
Sony on Friday said it would have to further delay the return of PlayStation Network following a massive security breach, just as reports stated hackers posted personal details from a Sony database.
According to Reuters report out of Tokyo, Sony was able to remove those published details from a website, although the report didn't say exactly what website hosted the stolen information.
Personal details of some 2,500 people were posted, including names and "some addresses" that were in a 2001 database. The security breach has affected 77 million PSN and Qriocity accounts, and 24.6 million Sony Online Entertainment accounts.
The news of the publishing of the details comes just as Sony confirmed that PSN would not be relaunching some network services as soon as planned. Previously, the company said it hoped to start a relaunch within a week of a PSN press conference that occurred April 30.
And on Thursday, Sony Computer Entertainment America said that it was in the final stages of testing its new security system. But a Sony spokeswoman confirmed with Reuters that relaunching within the original expected time frame would not be possible, and there is no firm date for the return of online services.
The latest note from SCEA senior director of corporate communications Patrick Seybold on Friday night said, "When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week."
"We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system," he added. "...Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online."
Sony is also reportedly considering offering a reward for help in catching the perpetrators of the cyber attack, according to Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital blog, which cited "people familiar with the matter."
The reward may or may not be implemented, the report said, as Sony executives are weighing the pros and cons of such a move, which would be made in coordination with law enforcement.
[UPDATE: An update to the Reuters report and a separate report on The Wall Street Journal said the personal information was on a Sony-affiliated website, which the company was unaware was accessible to people outside of Sony.
The information was made public by cyber intruders and was from a 2001 product sweepstakes contest. No credit cards, social security numbers or passwords were revealed. The company took down the website on Thursday.
"The website was out of date and inactive when discovered as part of the continued attacks on Sony," the company said.]

Re: PSN is down.. Could be 2 days till full service is restored
So the threat of a 3rd hit against Sony came true and (somewhat limited) personal information on about 2500 accounts was apparently posted. Not sure where this batch of information came from, but read somewhere it was from an old 2001 database. Who knows.
Also read this won't be the last strike against Sony, but at some point I have to think whoever is behind this has to know they're playing with fire the more they go after the same target within a short period of time. Best damage is to let them get PSN and everything back up, then strike again, hopefully taking it down. Again.
"People may shout: 'I'm never going to buy Sony again,' but in our experience that doesn't tend to happen."
Unfortunately, they're right. Speaking personally I know I'll never buy another Sony product again but I also realize most people don't care about ethics. This is why Wal-Mart is still in business.

No 'account' info, it was a database of contest entries from 10 years ago.Siji wrote:personal information on about 2500 accounts was apparently posted.
ROFL, how the fuck is this a reflection of Sony's ethics?I know I'll never buy another Sony product again but I also realize most people don't care about ethics.

The ethics in question... that Sony would brag about their security in front of hackers and essentially paint a target on their own backs, all while knowingly having extremely delicate systems. That is the easy part to understand. Something is ethically amiss about toying with millions of peoples' very important information in such a way, no?

Could you show me where they were 'bragging' about their security?
Are you the kind of person who'd say it's a woman's fault if she gets raped while wearing a short skirt?essentially painting a target on their backs
While their security wasn't definitely not as good as it could have been, I doubt anyone could say that they were toying with the information.Something is ethically amiss about toying with millions of peoples' very important information in such a way, no?

Sony had the option to put on steel panties and do something other than broadcast their unrapeability from deep within downtown rapetown. Your comparison is offensive, irrelevant, and utterly sickening. Thanks for the update on your character. Are you the kind of person who'd say it's a woman's fault if she gets raped while wearing a short skirt?

OK, so you're saying it's Sony fault they got hacked.
They shouldn't have gone after hackers who were posting CFWs and youtube videos on how to hack the PS3.
The hackers are valiant, noble, law-abiding individuals who were only forced to partake in these illegal actions because Sony didn't want them to play free video games.

And where are the links to Sony bragging about their security?

Yep. Even if you don't agree with the hacking of the PS3 and you agree Sony was well within their rights to employ the gestapo thug tactics they did you still have to place a lot of blame on Sony for their shitty network security and storage of account information in plaintext.miir wrote:OK, so you're saying it's Sony fault they got hacked.
For one thing the geohot video didn't show how to 'hack' your PS3 it simply showed him running a CFW. A CFW, which by the way, did not enable the playing of game rips. So what 'illegal actions' are you claiming went on?miir wrote:They shouldn't have gone after hackers who were posting CFWs and youtube videos on how to hack the PS3.

And graf was only working to get linux running on the PS3 and Sony had his house raided. Twice. Fuck Sony.
Your response shows what little you know about the situation and the people Sony actually went after. None of them supported piracy or released tools that enabled it. You could claim the keys that geohot posted enabled that but I think a lot of people made a bigger deal about that then it was by claiming Sony had no way to fix it since they apparently have in 3.60. That's what should have happened to begin with: Fix your shit and move on.
graf and geohot weren't criminals. Nice try though!I'm not the one sympathising with criminals.

I have no opinion on any of this, but I just registered a new card on Amazon, and it didn't require me to provide any information whatsoever beyond number and expiration date, and it reminded me of this thread.
Re: PSN is down.. Could be 2 days till full service is restored
Did you actually buy anything or just register the card? Maybe it only asks when you actually make a purchase.
If you did make a purchase then nevermind! I bought something from them a few weeks ago but don't remember if the security code was required or not at time of checkout.

Amazon.ca requires the CVV2.
Well then again, I guess it's not that weird.
The banking industry is such a mess in the US, it's not surprising that a lot of US companies haven't adopted security standards used pretty much worldwide.

Which goes back to where I tried to explain that it is not the standard in the US.miir wrote:Weird.Sueven wrote:I bought something.

I feel like some enterprising lawyer could figure out some way to turn this into an insanely expensive lawsuit.

Oh there they are.. In green. About 8 New England states online so far. Pokey.
I don't see any states filled in at the current time but guess they are on their way.Thank you for your patience and encouragement over the last few weeks. As covered in the post from earlier today, you can now update the firmware on your PS3 and change your password. Kazuo Hirai just announced that we have begun the phased restoration by region of some of the services, starting with online multiplayer functionality.
Please note that these services will take a bit of time to be turned on and rolled out to the whole country. The process has begun and some states are being turned on now, so please be patient as we reach your city and state. We’ll be updating the map below as service comes online in individual states. It will take several hours to restore PSN throughout the entire country, so please keep checking back for the latest updates. In the meantime, now’s a great time to get your PS3’s firmware updated, which is required to get online.

That was a long 2 days till full service was restored!
Re: PSN is down.. Could be 2 days till full service is restored
Full service still isn't completely restored. For example the Store portion is still down. You can do multiplayer that's about it at least as far as I tried. Oh and Home seems to work. Good to see the essentials are functional!
