2011 Finished game list

Post by Fairweather Pure »

Here is where we keep track of which games we've finished for the year. I think keeping our small group of remaining posters playing and discussing on the same thread would be better than splitting us up into console specific threads.

--What counts as finished?

Well, I say it's when you see credits roll (if possible). Some games are perpetual, such as sports games, things like Battlefield 1943, and many others. For these, it's whenever you feel you've accomplished the goals you set out for yourself in the game. For something like L4D, it may be as simple as playing through all the maps, or as complicated as getting every acheivement in the game. We're using the honesty system here, so when you've finished a game, go ahead and list it!

What counts as complete?

This is a significant difference over simply finishing a game. Completing means you have snagged 1000/1000 acheivements or platinum trophied the game. You have done everything there is to do in that game. This counts for games as large as Fallout 3 and as small as an XBL or PSN game. If games have no "proof" or scoring method, it's all you're decision.

--What counts as a game?

It's a harder question than you maight think. For instance, when tallying up the games I finished last year, I had to really think about some particular situations. One such issue was "Do I count each piece of DLC for Fallout 3 seperately"? My answer was yes. However, the DLC for Gears 2 and L4D were only one map, so I chose not to count them. I totally counted Peggle on my iPhone, since I beat that like a rented mule. In the end, it's up to you. Some situations will just depend on your personal opinion on what you consider as a game, or just an addition to the game itself. More examples are the latest Borderlands DLC (not games IMO) and the GTA4 expansions Lost and the Damned and Ballad of Gay Tony (both games!).

--Do multiple playthroughs count?

I say yes! I played the single player of Halo 3, Gears 1, and World at War only to play all the way through them again at a later time in co-op mode with a friend. I plan on doing a co-op run through RE5 sometime this year. I count each one of those complete playthroughs as finishing another game. I think you should give yourself credit for the time/effort it takes to play through your favorite games multiple times. This also helps ensures that you continue to play games for enjoyment.

--What systems count?

All of them. iPhone, PC/Steam, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP, fucking anything and everything!

The format will be as such:

Date - Game - System - COMPLETE

Only use the red completed msg when you have completed a game. The rest are just assumed that you finished a game.

I just finished Vanquish. I'm going to try something new this year along the lines of "I must beat 2 games before buying a new one" in order to get a handle on my backlog and stop it from growing. We'll see how that goes!

Castlevania and Dead Space 2 will be next on the menu!

I'm going to say in advance, my first is going to be Killzone 3. I just need to finish off the last few sections of the co op campaign and I've got the platinum. Way easier to get than the second game.

Edit: Killzone 3 platinum.

Torchlight down!. It took about 10ish hours to beat. I died twice on the very last level of the game (due to being in a hurry, I had to get to work!), and that's it. Good game, but I was ready to be done with it when I finished. If this had multiplayer it would be 10x better. I look forward to the sequel. I unlocked all achievements except "gaining max fame". Max fame is lvl 33, I ended the game at level 22 and thought "yeah, I don't want to play this game for another 5-6 hours for a single achievement".

Now back to Prototype.

Risk Factions was a very fun little title. Humans vs Cats vs Robots vs Zombies vs Yeti. I wished it was on the iPad. I was pretty happy to beat the last level after failing about 5 times. I swear, the computer cheats at dice rolling...

Medal of Honor down. Fun game, but extremely short (less than 5 hours). I'll mess around with mutiplayer later. I really liked the shooting in the game, but it really felt like I was in a shooting gallery more than any other shooter. I would put the campaign somewhere between a CoD and Bad Company in terms of quality. The ending seemed somewhat abrupt and anti-climatic too. This is a 20$ game based purely on the single player. I'll see if the multiplayer community is even active later.

MoH multiplayer had about 1500 people online when I tried it prior to lunch today. I tried out some of the modes, which were pretty fun, but the people that were playing were obviously all veterans who knew the maps like the back of their hands and had optimal weapon load outs for every map I tried. Fuck that noise. I got sick of dieing over and over to people I never even saw. The sniping was like no other game I have ever seen before, and that's saying a lot. If I can get sniped from a pixel sized bad guy with an iron scoped SMG, there's something wrong with the game IMO.

So basically, fuck MoH multiplayer right in the ass.

Kill Team down! Excellent twin stick shooter. Other than unskippable cut scenes that repeat when you die at certain check points, tge game gets an almost perfect score from me. The 5 classes are pretty different from each other and require a different strategy when playing. No online co-op is beyond lame too, only local. I'd say the game is only 3-4 hours long on a single playthrough but there is lots of replayability to it with the different classes and various challange modes (ala Horde Mode). I loved every minute of the game as I was playing it! For 800MSPs, it was a good buy.

Katamari Forever finally down. I've had that game for years. I've played it off and on for about 2 years, so I'm really not sure why it took so long. I guess a lot of that time was spent screwing around or letting my girls roll around for fun, but still, it's not a very long game!

Both Toy Soldiers down last night. Yes, I beat Toy Soldiers: Cold War in about 4-5 hours on the day of release. It is easier than the first Toy Story, and I would even say more fun due to some of the more random elements and access to play more often with vehicles.

Finished up Devil Survivor Overclocked on the 3DS.
The addition of an 8th day, full voiceovers and better graphics are pretty awesome but still not reason enough to pick up a 3DS.

Up next, Starfox 64 3D!

Space Marine down. I'd give it a 9/10. The setting was a little repetitive, but the story was simple and direct. The action never lets down, and the ending was pretty cool and oh so 40k. The combination between ranged and close combat was perfect. It's hard to talk about a lot of the cool stuff because it would be spoilers! I would buy a sequel day 1.

That's brainwash speak!

iPhone = best phone
iPad = best tablet
Mac = not best computer
FCP = heading downhill fast
You can probably tell that I'm a bit of an Apple fanboy. I have worshipped at the alter of Jobs for longer than I, or my accountant care to remember. They've never let me down until now... The new Final Cut Pro X, supposedly a complete revamp of their video editing software that the majority of video producers rely on, completely sucks balls. HARD.

One of the fundamental problems is it's completely arrogant disregard for legacy formats. Imagine you are a TV company with gigabytes of archive material you need to access that you've previously edited. Tough shit sonny, that's not getting on FCPX. Want to import something from tape? Get knotted pal - tape is for losers! Didn't you know?!

There are countless more geeky and tedious reasons why Final Cut Pro X is an insult to professional video editors which I won't bore you with, just watch the Conan video.

You're using crusty software? What happened? Did the maker of your editing software put out a new version that was universally hated, causing even late night talk show hosts to make fun of it?

I'm using the same video editing software used to edit 300, Napoleon Dynamite, Jarhead, The Simpsons Movie, Where the Wild Things Are, The Social Network and every Coen brothers flick since Intolerable Cruelty, to name a few.

I'm using the same air to breath that Julius Caesar, Pee Wee Herman, and Steven Spielberg used, to name a few.

I knocked out StarCraft 2 this weekend. Great game with some really fun levels but the ending left something to be desired. I really look forward to the Zerg and Protoss expansions. I really want to play the last 2 levels over again but with opposite choices.

The latest content patch in WoW is eating up my time for other games. I'm re-re-re-re-re-re-gearing up for PvP and PvE. The treadmill never ends!

I just polished off Gears 3. Good game. It sure is pretty! I would still have to say the second game was my favorite in the series though. I'm painfully close to finishing Killzone 2, so I may try and get that finished sometime this week and add it to this year's list. I've been playing that game off and on for 3 years. It's time to put an end to it.

Looking over my list, I'm quite happy with the games I've beaten.

Working my way through Call of Duty World at War on Veteran mode. (Picked it up since it was only $10) I can't believe how cheap this game is with the grenade spam. It's ridiculous! Run to cover and have 5 grenades drop at your feet. Yeah that's fair!

Thanks to Skyrim, I did not finish Dead Island. Thanks to TOR, I'll not be finishing Skyrim anytime soon.
