My household was "quite comfortable" making about what you have left over after tax and living expenses, and we were living in Minnesota. Isn't that one of the most expensive cost of living states in the country? Not sure what part of Jersey you're talking about, but looks like most of them are very similar in all metrics except houses are much more expensive in NJ.

This has been totally derailed by one person's story.

I have 3 points.

1. For the supporters of this extension who claim it is in business' best interest, these taxes having nothing to do with businesses. It's personal income.

2. For the wealthiest 1%, a revert to the old tax bracket will not affect how they spend their money. They're rich for chrissakes, and they'll continue to buy nice cars and 60" plasmas. A wealthy person seeking a business bank loan when taxes are increased is not going to be denied because of taxes.

3. For the pro-business blow hards, this country is being run, fiscally, like the worst businesses I've ever seen. Cut revenue? Raise spending? At some point we need to realize this is untenable. And the cover-all "end govnt waste" argument is too unspecific to make any sense. It's a talking point and political platform ... all rhetoric, no substance. At this rate, social security and medicade will collapse at a more alarming rate than ever.

(I've talked to a few folks who have worked in the public and private sectors for their respective fields (most notably lawyers) and they've told me private waste is above and beyond public.)

Republicans and Democrats over spend equally, just in different sectors.

That amount is before income taxes btw.

I am not familiar with the metrics of Minn. I do know that NJ is anything but a homogenized population so median figures can be extremely misleading, on a county or even a town level.

Taking four figures from me would effect my spending. I know it would effect most people on my block. A household amount of 250k in my area is not a rich household.

Did you just ask if Minn. cost of living compares to NJ? I have a ton of relatives there. If I were to make the same amount in Minnesota that I make in CA, I WOULD be rich.

Hats are provided to all Canadians by their government along with health care.

Obama actually removed his "free hat for every American" out of his health care reform just to avoid another comparison to Canada's evil socialist health care system.

It's really hard to compare apples to apples, housing costs and taxes vary a lot just from town to town. I'm not sure how they figure it regionally, they say St. Louis in cheaper than Tampa, having lived in both I can agree - sort of. But what you actually get in each can vary so widely as to not be a valid comparison.

If someone wants to find me a job that pays $250k a year I will more than happily pay an additional $2k - $13k a year in income taxes. Hell I'd happily pay $30k more in taxes. Thanks!

If you're making that much, even as a a married couple, and you're not living in a crazy expensive area, consider yourself truly fortunate. A large majority of people are making nowhere near that.

There are areas I could double or triple my income moving too, and then be either paying for a hugely expensive mortgage, living in a shithole, or spending a couple hours a day commuting. All the while counting down the days until I could get the hell out. I'll pass. Already did my purgatory in Alameda county.

I do hear the mountain view chocolate factory is hiring.

rich/not rich. whatever. if you're household is earning 250k a year, you're doing just fine whether in Oklahoma, NY, Paris or Tokyo.

I would too. It's a lot easier to have two people in 125k jobs than one with 250k or even 200k like it would be for the single person filing.
