I was trying to figure out the same thing, and it appears, from the link, that it is/was being built out of the recycled steel from the World Trade Center.

Yea, the Bow Stem (the cutting edge of the Bow) used some recycled steel from the world trade center.

I suppose it's semi-interesting to boat aficionados.

I just found out about it. That makes it current. It was made out of steel from the World Trade center. That makes it a CE worthy post. I believe it was christened back in March, yet I don't recall seeing the reports about this on this news. What a monumentous feat. What a great story. But, the media doesn't like covering such patriotic wonderous things like this during a campaign season where it is only important to project how awful things are and that we need a savior to bring us change. That makes it a CE worthy post.

That's a bit misleading.
A small piece of the ship used some steel salvaged from the world trade center.

You always seem to be looking for the marshmallow bit in the shit cereal. You hold it up and say "Look, a marshmallow!", while all I can think of is that it's in a bowl full of shit.

It's very hard form me to find anything good to say about anything from this administration. It's been a catastrophe. It is going to take a new president and staff before I even start looking for marshmallows again.

0.03% of the ship was made from steel salvaged from the wtc wreckage.
The steel accounted for roughly $900 of the boats $1 billion dollar cost.

India and China bought tens of thousands of tons of salvage from the WTC site at a rate of $120/ton.
How patriotic is that?

Not very. It's just marketing... Instead of just another ship, this one has some 'meaning.'

I think the slogan 'never forget' about 9/11 is really lame. If you want something to remind yourself about surprise attacks, Pearl Harbor was more than sufficient and a lot more serious.

The San Antonio class is basically one step up from the Phoenix class. The San Antonio is pretty boring in design and is more of a defenisve class that just gets the job done and stays in service for extended periods. The Phoenix class are a lot flashier and basically have zero defensive mechanisms and just throw pure offense out and hope to survive long enough to win a battle. They also tend to be back in port very early summer and do not come back out until fall.

Placing a piece of the World Trade Center into a military machine is a simple way of trying to drive home the bridge between the terrorist attack and the reason we're at war. A more accurate portrayal would be a large painting of Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld across the side. The World Trade Center attack was an excuse, Bush and Co. were the reason.

I also think it would've been better to make body armor for our troops and vehicles out of it instead. What better promo could this administration hope for than a soldier who was saved by a vest that had a piece of the World Trade Center in it? SAVED BY THE BUILDING THE IRAQIS BROUGHT DOWN 911 NEVER FORGET

It's fluff intended to pacify it's already pacified audience like Midnyte.

I do find it somewhat allegorical that the wreckage of 9/11 would be used to create a war machine.

From someone who spent about a week recently aboard the USS New Orleans (the second San Antonio class ship built), you're wrong.

You don't have to take my word for it. Ask the Marines in their LAVs, LCACs and Osprey's how offensive they are. The San Antonio class are stealth ships. The superstructure is made from composites, not metal. Not sure what's so boring about a stealth ship, but what do I know. They're designed to launch over the horizon strikes on land and they're able to unload ~800 marines in a hurry.

If you're point was that the boat itself has weaponry that's more defensive in nature for ship to ship battles, you'd be correct, but the mission of the ship is to unload a shitload of marines, not to wage a naval battle.

For those interested in more information, Future Weapons season 2 episode 13 features the USS San Antonio (which was a disaster at release btw). Not a lot of information, but some cool pictures and images.

Also for those outside of Naval service from any country; if you ever find yourself in a discussion with anyone from your respective Navy (officers or chiefs especially):

Ship = surface vessel
Boat = submarine

You can thank me later.
