Never heard of it either. So, it is basically the same as all the other quasi-mexican burrito assembly joints?

Yeah, pretty much. I prefer them, but there's nothing super spectacular that separates Moe's from any of the others. I still say Maui Tacos is the best of them all, but they're even smaller and more obscure. I think their expansion efforts stalled in the face of better funded and better organized competitors like Moe's and Chipotle.

Taco Bell used to have the Chilito...it was very yummy...but the payback out the backside could be unpleasant.

Zantigo
Zantigo was (and is) a chain of fast food Mexican restaurants in the Midwestern portion of the United States. The original chain of that name was a division of KFC. In 1986, KFC was sold by its then-owner, RJR Nabisco, to Pepsico. Since Pepsi already owned a national Mexican food chain, Taco Bell, the decision was made to close or convert all existing Zantigo restaurants.

In many cases, the existing Zantigo assets were in better locations or in better physical condition than nearby Taco Bell locations. Thus, most Zantigo locations continued to remain in business as Taco Bells, with the nearby Taco Bell locations being closed. This led indirectly to the Taco Bell chain as a whole adopting many of the distinctive architectural details of the old Zantigo restaurant buildings.

Zantigo also had several unique menu items - the Chilito, the Taco Burrito, Chips 'n' Cheese, the Cheesarito, and the Mucho Tostada. Of these, the Chilito and Cheesarito were carried over by Taco Bell after the purchase in former Zantigo markets. The Chilito was promoted to a chain-wide item, and was later renamed "Chili-cheese Burrito". The Cheesarito makes occasional special appearances during the Christian holy season of Lent. Its popular counterpart, the Chilito, is still served at Zantigo today.

A new Zantigo chain, under new ownership consisting of former Zantigo franchisees, opened with three restaurants in Minnesota in 1999 and currently has six locations in Minnesota. There was one location in New Richmond, Wisconsin which opened in May of 2005, however they closed in August of 2007 when the owner decided to convert the building into a 1950's style diner. The menu is virtually identical to that of the original Zantigo chain, with numerous additions.

In the late 1970s, after years of complaints by Mexican-American activist groups, the Zantigo chain changed the name and signage of all its restaurants. Previously, it had been known as Zapata, and the signage featured a silhouette of a tall Mexican wearing a sombrero, presumably Emiliano Zapata. The new Zantigo chain was also known as Zapata for the first few years of its existence, and changed its name for similar reasons.

Chilito

The chilito is a burrito-like tortilla entree that is served at Zantigo restaurants throughout the midwest. It is priced at $1.39. There are two versions of the chilito, hot and mild. The mild contains a red chili sauce, while the hot version contains a green chili sauce.
Some time after the Chilito became a Taco Bell item, they fucked with the recipe (probably supply chain differences between the two chains) and it no longer tasted the same (i.e. Yummy!). I keep wanting to try the current Zantigo Chilito and see if it's the one I remember, taste-wise, or some new Taco-Bellish facsimilie, but I'm never out in Wisconsin/Minnesota.

Ya know... even though Taco Bell is not high-quality or remotely healthy--and it is prepared sloppier than any fast food I have every seen(who teaches them to fold burritos, wtf!)--sometimes, sometimes, it hits the spot. :D

How do you pronounce Qdoba? I always thought it was "Cue-Dough-Buh", but was having a conversation with someone yesterday who pronounced it totally different. I'm not even sure how to phoneticize her pronunciation.

Yes we do. Its on campus on High and 18th. It is now called Jimmy Guaco's though.

Qdoba is better because it is an upgraded Chipotle with QUESO.

I haven't been down on campus in probably a decade, but I agree on Qdoba >Chipotle (because sometimes you want the queso).

I, like Ash always pronounced the Q part of Qdoba with a "coo" sound instead of the "cue". I assumed since it was Mexican food, they were going for a spanish sound. Guess I was wrong!

Jimmy Guaco's is a different company altogether, though it appears they have a similar menu. It looks like the owner of the Moe's franchise on OSU's campus shut down, and Jimmy Guaco's opened its first location in its place. Also, Moe's has queso sauce that's pretty good. I rarely get it, though, because I tend to avoid that sort of thing. Like I said before, though, I don't really think there's that much to separate Moe's, Qdoba or Chipotle to say that one is significantly better than the others. I just prefer Moe's over the others, but they're all essentially meat, beans and other stuff in a tortilla, and all pretty tasty.

Jimmy Guaco's food is the exact same as Moe's was. The salsa (all 6 of them) are the same recipe's. But they have a really individualized serving station, their peppers (red/green) and onions are all in separate pans and they have 2 kinds of rice!

I would like it known that while I crave a chimichanga or the Mexican grilled cheese (quesadilla) every now and again, I think that Mexican food, by and large, sucks. There are a few exceptions of course (albondigas, mole, tortilla soup, fish tacos) but your typical mexican street food: tortilla, meat, lettuce, some sort of tomato, refried bean, cheese, etc. is so meh.

Yup, these places are just dumbed-down version of the real thing--with varying dgrees of tolerability. ;)

I had Chipooplople yesterday, a chicken fajita burrito. It did not really have much flavor....they should at least try to sautee the veggies instead of steam them or whatever... maybe add salt!

Wasn't sure if this was the right thread, considering we have two hijacked by burrito/quasi-mexican food responses, but I can't stand chipotle primarily because they don't mix the goddamn burrito. There's a good chance of biting into the burrito and only getting rice. I'm spoiled by a better quasi-mexican food place called Illegal Pete's.

Pete's >>> Chipotle

Of course, neither come close to an adobado burrito smothered in green chili. :vv_drool:

Yeah, that has bothered me about Chipotle, and sometime causes me to get a burrito bowl, so I can mix the ingredients myself.

Moe's doesn't mix the stuff up, but they do a good job of distributing the filling so that it's even, or at leas they did when I still got the tortillas. For the last couple of years, I almost always get my burritos without the tortilla, what's called a streaker burrito at Moe's, or I just don't bother eating the tortilla. Foregoing just the super-jumbo flour tortillas they use takes 310 calories (49g carbs, 10g fats, 8g protein) off the meal and turns it into something that's reasonably healthy (I don't have any of the cheese or sour cream either). I've always thought it was funny that they still referred to this as a burrito, but I guess it keeps the menu simple.

This, btw, is the reason that I almost always ask to substitute corn tortillas instead of flour tortillas when eating at a Mexican restaurant.

I highly prefer corn tortillas. That's what I grew up eating, and I never understood why people ate flour instead. I can still remember making them when I spent the summers on a citrus plantation in the Rio Grande Valley.

Cheese belongs on nachos and inside quesadillas!

Sour cream is just wrong.

Sour cream is wrong. Cheese is everything that is right about messican food.

Yeah, the nutrition is the other part of why I usually go without the tortilla. However when I do get something with a tortilla, I prefer flour over corn almost every time, corn tortillas to me have a lot less flavor and I don't like the texture as much.

The more sour cream and cheese on any kind of mexican food the better.

Who the fuck couldn't figure this out on their own?!?
There are probably people in this country that think vegetables are manufactured or created by wizardry.
