i am cheating on my beloved gyration air mouse to try out the MX revolution.

i bought this mouse for work, 99% of the reason i bought it is for the free scrolling wheel... but the quick search and app switching also sounded sexy

The free scrolling wheel is the best thing since the scrolling wheel. Hopefully the concept will catch on. The implementation of it in this mouse, however, is awkward. With setpoint installed, every application seems to react differently to the scroll wheel. Mostly just annoying differences like scroll sensitivity, until I tried it on a Visual Basic code window, which was 95% of the reason that I wanted a free scrolling wheel. When you turn the wheel very slowly in VB, its fine.. but if you go up to a higher speed locks in that scrolling position.. so if you scroll down too fast, for example, it will permanently scroll down to the very end of your code and then lock up as it tries to keep scrolling downward forever. This is whether you have free scrolling OR click-to-click turned on. In fact, I even tried to test out a vanilla wired mouse with it.. SetPoint actually fucks up ANY mouse wheel that you are using. Just silly.

So I tried uninstalling setpoint and now the scrolling is an absolute beauty in every application. Totally fucking awesome as long as you dont use Setpoint.

Unfortunately setpoint is needed for the quick search and the app switching but I'm pretty sure I can find software that does the same thing and doesnt blow.. if i really need to. So I wont comment on the other features of the mouse since I can't really use them with SetPoint turned off. The free scroll wheel alone though is huge props.

still not sure if i can keep this mouse, though. like all logitech mice i have a problem with it being heavy and enormous. and the shape of it is really not doing anything for me. i'll give it a fair shot

The setpoint drivers are horrible. Beyond bad, they've fucked up several other installed programs of mine over the years. I quit using them awhile back.

I couldn't get used to the shape of the Revolution. It was a disappointing follow up to the MX-1000.

I'm still in mouse hell. I can't use a wired mouse and there are no quality 1600dpi or higher mice available now that the G7 has been retired with no replacement. I still don't get why Logitech stopped production on the G7. Craziness.

I'm hoping for someone other than Logitech to come up with a quality wireless mouse as I have no desire to deal with Setpoint. Logitech has proven for years that they aren't able to make good drivers.

The only complaint I have about this mouse is the placement of the search button. I have hit it in games, and it brings me to the desktop as it attempts to search for something.

I just bought another G5 because they had a newer version with a forward button added to it. That was my only complaint about the G5 (i have had no problems with the setPoint software, and I have the buttons on the mouse do very different operations depending on the application i'm in. However, logitech has totally sucked at drivers for years, and i'm sure it's only a matter of time before I run into a problem).

I don't think so. Even though it's listed, if you follow the online sales links you get "deactivated item"

Canelek: ask him if there's a high DPI wireless mouse that's going to replace the G7 and why they stopped making the G7.

The Revolution, MX-1000, etc are all 800dpi mice which is really low precision for a mouse these days.(the G7 is 2000dpi) With my current mouse, it feels like im using a rubber band to move around the screen.

Also ask him if they've fixed the double-click issue on their mice. (very common problem with Logitech mice is that the little click thingy wears out and you start toget double-clicks when single clicking)

It is deactivated on the Newegg site, but that does not mean they stopped making it. It is available on two of the other retailers as well as through the 'Add to Cart' button at the link he gave.

Probably some referb!

BTW, unfortunately with Logitech and mice, I've had several defective ones right out of the box so I like to buy them locally. (two has the double click problem)

Thanks! Would be nice to get the insider scoop! Despite the possibility of a few online stores offering referbed (maybe) G7's, there's obviously not much going on with it as Frys, Best Buy, Circuit City and Newegg have been out of stock for months.

There was no holiday release of new mice from Logitech last year except for the gyro mouse so I'm hoping we don't have to wait until September for something new.

True. Mostly what I see from Logi these days is their audio line. I had demoed a 2.1 zCinema PC setup recently, but have been wanting to have some devices sent my way (to no avail as of yet). I too want a new top-end Logi mouse.

Here is what I got back--he didn't mention issue with clicky (never experienced that myself).

Honestly, I have no idea if they are going to make one. Sadly, that division is down in california so I am not usually kept up on what they are developing. I will keep my ear to the ground about it though. If you really want the best gaming mouse, the G9 is the top of the line we offer but it is corded.

Amazon has the G7 in stock.

I tried the G9 but the cord is too much of a distraction when you're using high dpi. I may have to risk ordering a G7 from Amazon. Sounds like it's possible something new may come out as he's compartmentalized for info!

I would say go with amazon as well. Honestly, I have had no bad experiences with them nor their vendors. I tend to aim for longer-standing vendors... Who knows if or when they are going to have a direct upgrade to the G7, so may as well grab an extra one just in case. I don't mind the cord so much, but I definately see your point in high-DPI modes.

Wrong! Newegg carries the G7 again! I ordered one today along with my new video card.

The pain and suffering I've experienced with inferior (and wired) mice over the past few months since my G7 died makes Gitmo look like a Playboy Mansion Adventure.

G7 > All wireless mice

The good:

-Big Feet that never wear out
-2000 dpi, much higher than other 800 dpi mice,
-no rubberbanding effect like you get with cheaper wireless mice
-has some weight to it but slides so easy with the huge feet it has. (best of both worlds)

The bad:
- has single side button so either forward or back but not both!
-potential or end of life double click issues with all (wired or wireless) logitech mice is what my original G7 succumbed to after a long heavy use life. That's a Logitech thing though not specific to the G7

Haven't had a problem with my G5 at work, or either of my ones at home, all which have had heavy use.

If you use a special mouse pad, or even a desktop (just not cloth), i really recommend these Teflon Feet specifically made for the G Series.

Edit: surprised they didn't re-release the G7 with the extra button (for forward) like they did with the G5.

Oh yeah, and fuck changing batteries with my current POS wireless mouse. Even rechargeable AA batteries are a pain in the ass. I prefer swapping out the G7's batter every 1 1/2 days. It's a quick swap.

With the new 46" TV/PC Monitor, I might look into a wireless keyboard addition to the slim metal apple keyboard I have already for easy chair slacker browsing.
