I got my first Comcast DL warning
A legal representitive from Comcast called me yesterday and informed me that I was in the top 1% of DLers in the US and would have to "drastically reduce" my Internet usage or face a 12 month ban from Comcast.
We've all heard the song and dance before. He would not tell me what my limit was, because I have no limit. However, if I exceeded that limit, I would be banned from Comcast. I took this circular logic around the track a couple of times before trying hanging up in sheer frustration. He said I was at 400G for last month. That is totally incorrect. I was at 1200G for last month and I already have 250 for this month.
I'm not sure where these people get thier numbers, or even if they are given any at all. I think I'm just a name on a list they had to call and issue the warning.
So, it looks like I'll be dropping Comcast for another ISP.
Anyone else ever gotten the warning?

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
No warning here yet but I wonder if it is just uploads they are fucking with. I was downloading a bunch of torrents the other day and they were all flying along, 10 minutes later my downloads are all stopped. I reset my router and opened Utorrent back up and they all started again, but this seems to happen fairly regularly.Fairweather Pure wrote:A legal representitive from Comcast called me yesterday and informed me that I was in the top 1% of DLers in the US and would have to "drastically reduce" my Internet usage or face a 12 month ban from Comcast.

I have also had issues when downloading (I probably had 6-8 cd's downloading), the internet would not work on my wii, xbox, etc.. So it seems like my bandwidth is being very limited, which has never been the case in the past.
It's only been an issue the past month or two but it's already starting to really piss me off.

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
I wouldn't be so quick to drop them, I'm not sure you'll find better bandwidth anywhere. In fact I'm pretty sure you won't find anything close at the moment, and you should just take it easy for a month and get off their radar screen.
Funk, this happens to me as well... Every now and then I have to reset the router. Doesn't really bother me unless it happens during an overnight download.

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
I'm worried that if I'm on thier radar, I'm on some other people's radar as well. I think I should just drop Newsleecher. It's too much temptation.
I'm mostly upset because they advertise unlimited Internet use. I'm no lawyer, but that sure looks like false advertising to me. Even the fine print is vague. If I have a limit, just fucking tell me. If it's 250G, I'll use 250G. If you can't tell me what my limit is, then by definition I don't have one.
Funk, I've heard the upload theory too. Let me lay that to rest. I haven't uploaded a single thing from my PC other than WoW packets, whatever my Xbox sends off, and maybe an email or 3. I'm not an uploader at all.

I'm pretty sure they came out and admitted they're fucking with torrents a while ago. I seem to recall a thread here. There's also an issue (even a lawsuit?) about it being false advertising.
1200GB a month?? Is this like 25 live streams from strippercams while you download a dozen movies in the background? Never mind, I don't want to know...

I've seen what they send when they actually have cause... I just got lucky because it was on my hosting server, and they assumed it was a customer of mine.

Much of it was porn DVD ISOs. However, once DLed, I would be missing a single .rar flie, so I would just end up deleting it. Out of all that, I kept maybe 400-500G of stuff. That would include a couple of video games and about 60G of music too.
Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Dude...1.2 TB of data in one month?
You deserve to be cut off for that.
Don't abuse it. You must have been downloading non stop 24/7.
Pick and choose. If you keep the totals under 200GB a month, it's ignored if you have the highlest level of internet service (premium)
If you have the cheapo standard internet service (less Mbps) you'll be flagged for even less.
1.2TB is a retarded amount in one month. That's like leaving the water running all day long in your home.

Over a terabyte of downloading in a month is mind boggling to me even if it isn't all porn.. That is 10x more than my total hard drive space in a month..
And I thought I had a lot of porn!

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Some people would consider my use abusive and my highest month was 160GB. I average around 30-40GB/month.
On top of that, you're wasting half of the bandwidth by your own admission so you basically dumped 500GB because you don't know what a Par file is.

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
When even Winnow is admonishing your consumption habits you know you're in trouble.
Anyway, I'm not even sure Comcast advertises "Unlimited" usage anymore. Even so they have clear rules (other than specifying the actual amount you shouldn't be exceeding) about the abuse of service and if you'd check Comcast's Terms of Service policy you'd see that can terminate your service for whatever reason they want.
As far as lying low for awhile.. It would probably have to be a year rather than "taking it easy for a month" as I read that if you get 2 warnings in a 1 year period that's when you'll get the ban stick.
And yeah... Please read up on par files.
(By way of comparison I've recently hit 2TB retrieved but that's been a period of 20 months. I also don't use Comcast.)

Those who think Usenet is still 'under the radar' make note of item 3.Are there restrictions on bandwidth consumption that apply to the Service?
The Service is for personal and non-commercial residential use only. Therefore, Comcast reserves the right to suspend or terminate Service accounts where bandwidth consumption is not characteristic of a typical residential user of the Service as determined by the company in its sole discretion. Common activities that may cause excessive bandwidth consumption in violation of this Policy include, but are not limited to, numerous or continuous bulk transfers of files and other high capacity traffic using (i) file transfer protocol ("FTP"), (ii) peer-to-peer applications, and (iii) newsgroups, whether provided by Comcast or a third party. You must also ensure that your use of the Service does not restrict, inhibit, interfere with, or degrade any other person's use of the Service, nor represent (as determined by Comcast in its sole discretion) an overly large burden on the network. In addition, you must ensure that your use of the Service does not limit or interfere with Comcast's ability to deliver and monitor the Service or any part of its network.

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Forty Gigs ain't shit. That's a single Blu Ray.
I just checked and apparently I DLed 5 Blu Ray ISOs too. That was in preperation for if/when I get a burner. I haven't even unzipped them yet, nor educated myself on what it will entail to extract and burn it. That's over 200G right there!
And yes, I know what a PAR file is. It was one of the many things I had to read up on once I started using Newsleecher. Everyone uploads in different formats and there is a wide variety of ways to compress files. I also had to join files, convert formats, ect. Overall, if I had continuous errors while trying to extract and couldn't find more PAR or .rar files, I would delete it simply because I needed the space and didn't have time to fuck with it.
Yeah, I was DLing 24/7 pretty much.
I'll be a little more picky I guess. But I shouldn't have to be.

lol, I hate to ask how much HDD space you have when you can afford 200GB for files "in case" you get a burner. I guess I'll just be jealous as I only have 500GB (which is ample for me!)

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
1.2TB of bandwidth I'd guess equals anywhere from 120 to 240 other Comcast average internet users. (5-10GB/month)
It's that kind of abuse that fucks it up for everyone else.
Downloading full Blu Ray discs is retarded. You can get full HD files that are around 7GB.
Also, have fun storing those huge Blu Ray ISOs with the cost of an empty Blu Ray disk being ~12-14.00 each. I've seen Actual Blu-Ray Movies on sale for 15.00.

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Another great part of Newsleecher that I only recently started using is Repair & Extract. Go to the Repair & Extract tab and turn on the Enabled, Repair, Extract, and Monitor checkboxes. Then when you leech something, grab at least the .par2 and a few blocks (i only get a few, usually everything is good)... Newsleecher will auto repair and extract the files and put them in a sub-directory.Fairweather Pure wrote:And yes, I know what a PAR file is. I used to search "1080" and feast on HD content... I did download a few massive blu ray movies, but I don't think they are worth the time or storage space compared to the smaller hd versions you can find. My last computer choked on them and caused sync issues despite being able to play 1080 xvid/divx perfectly. 50 gigs of X Men 3 with a 2 second video delay, crap!

I'm with Fairweather on this. My ISP advertises as "unlimited bandwidth" yet I've been restricted a couple of times before for going upwards of 200gigs a month (I'm not a massive downloader, but 200gigs does not = unlimited.
If the advertising says unlimited, Fairweather should be allowed to download 600 terabytes a month if he feels like it.
But the advertising is bullshit. Ultimately the shitty ISP's should change their stupid marketing campaign so they stop lying to their customers and then make us out to be the evil ones for daring to download.

Your whole fucking claim is "If the advertising says unlimited, Fairweather should be allowed to download 600 terabytes a month if he feels like it. " So I'm simply asking to see that advertising. There's nothing pedantic about it as it's the main point of your statement.Nick wrote:Edit: Also, I'm going on Fairweathers claim its unlimited Aslanna, nothing else, but continue being pedantic if you wish. Regardless, since you'll choose to ignore that anyway, their Terms of Service, as was linked earlier, specifically gives them the right to do what they wish. If one doesn't agree to those terms they are free to seek out an alternate provider.

Comcast used to advertise "Unlimited" bandwidth, up till there was a backlash for the very issue Fair is complaining about, about a year ago. They don't advertise that way anymore, and as far as I have read, no one has successfully battled them in court for this issue, because "Unlimited" was defined in the contract as not actually unlimited.

Comcast Considering 250GB Monthly Data Caps, Disconnecting Repeat Pirates
Other than Time Warner's single-city foray into monthly data caps, consumption-based billing has mostly been little ISPs with little monopolies, and given the market, we thought it'd stay that way. Broadband Reports is, uh, reporting that now Comcast is mulling monthly caps (which Comcast's PR guy confirms, though not the details)—something like 250GB, and then $1.50 for every GB over that. According to their source, the idea has "a lot of momentum" and it'll start rolling out in the next two months. The other part is that they're going to start ramping up DMCA notices to pirate assholes, with a total disconnect if you've gotten four letters in a 12-month period.
If this is entering the mix with Comcast's new "protocol agnostic" network management technique (in something closer to English, very temporarily slowing down your whole connection if you're hitting the pipe really hard at the same time as a lot of other people in your area), you're looking at an uncomfortably restricted pipe (to me anyway), even if they're not targeting torrents specifically anymore, and the overage fees honestly aren't obscene.
The scary part is that this happening actually does make sense, for a couple of reasons. One, P2P traffic isn't the biggest bandwidth hog, it's streaming video, and this'll get people to (maybe) cut down on their habit, however they're sucking down bandwidth. Second, it'll keep them (sorta) clean with the FCC, which is seriously leaning toward transparency rules that would make ISPs be up front about this sort of thing anyway. And after all, there's no better motivator to watch your ass than money slipping out of your back pocket—no schmancy traffic management necessary. [Broadband Reports]

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Hey Aslanna, show me anywhere on the Comcast site (hell use the entire Internet) where it states what my DL limit is. Let me know what my invisible ceiling is, because no one at Comcast can seem to tell me.
Arador, I was wondering if people were trying to sue Comcast over this simply because they refuse to define or outline any sort of details on a DL limit. I'm uncertian how they can operate with such a meaningfully vague policy. I certianly wouldn't sue because, well, I don't care that much. It's just frustrating is all. I'm also assuming most people wouldn't want to sue because they're DLing lots and lots of copyrighted material and don't want to be under the magnifying glass.
To everyone else here, I am going to claim flat-out ignorance on the staggering amount of DLing I did. I just loaded up my que with pretty much anything I saw. There was no malicious plan or anything like that. I figured that if I'm paying for a newsgroup, I'm going to get my money's worth. I honestly had no idea there was a cap on bandwith until I recieved that phone call. In short, I promise I'm not the anti-christ. Please stop hating me and wishing I was dead. Like it or not, you all are my Internt peer group. What I thought was no big deal apparently was. Thanks for the hard lumps education that only VV can give.
Winnow, you can ignore that last paragraph. I actually did have a plan. That plan was to make you pay $15 more a month for your Internet connection. I've decided that reading your frustration and anger on this thread would make it worth it even if I was banned from the Internet for a year. Go shove a PAR file up your ass while you jack off to tentacle rape henti porn, you Peter Pan drama queen.
It's funny you say that, because I really think that I was heading towards a natural decline too. I was like a kid in a candy shop last month, and I'd gotten the majority of what I was looking for.I forgot that you're new to the Newsleecher scene, but I'm pretty sure your consumption rate would've fallen anyways...

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
You may have downloaded more porn in one month than I've downloaded my entire career.Fairweather Pure wrote:Go shove a PAR file up your ass while you jack off to tentacle rape henti porn, you Peter Pan drama queen.
Tentacle porn doesn't do it for me.
I'll skip your help request threads from now on. I've given you way more help than you deserve.
Get your money's worth? What are you? A cheap bastard? You paid 29.00 for giganews. 1.2TB is a fuckload more than your money's worth. One or two pirated movies covers the cost you dipshit. Keep on truck'in moron.I figured that if I'm paying for a newsgroup, I'm going to get my money's worth.

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Coming from a provider background earlier in my career, I can say Comcast is going to dump you if you use that much bandwidth.
It simply comes down to the fact that it doesn't make business sense to keep a customer that costs them more to provide service than they receive in payment.
It just isn't sound business practice.

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
I'm too impressed by the 1.2TB number to admonish Fairweather.
The lack of understanding of PAR files is a problem, as is the downloading shit you don't even know how to open, but still. 1.2 TB is a lot of work.
We should all really applaud Fairweather. He's out on the forefront of 'the new Internet'. He's pushing the ISPs to understand what types of users are coming down the pipe. Just imagine when a legit site offers streaming/downloadable Blue-Ray content in a channel format 24/7. The reality is that the ISPs are only gripping because they're not prepared for that and they're working to upgrade their infrastructure.
In closing, learn what a PAR file is, don't download shit you have no idea what to do with, but other than that, I applaud you.

Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Again, not relevant. Just because they don't tell people the magic limit doesn't mean it's "unlimited". As you found out when they contacted you lolz. It's well known that they don't state a DL limit.Fairweather Pure wrote:Hey Aslanna, show me anywhere on the Comcast site (hell use the entire Internet) where it states what my DL limit is. Let me know what my invisible ceiling is, because no one at Comcast can seem to tell me.
Are you kidding? They are a private company. It's their service. They don't have to state shit about how they are operating. If they feel someone is abusing the service they are within their right to enforce a limit, even if it's not publically defined, or to ban the account.Fairweather Pure wrote:Arador, I was wondering if people were trying to sue Comcast over this simply because they refuse to define or outline any sort of details on a DL limit. I'm uncertian how they can operate with such a meaningfully vague policy.

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Downloading is a lot like drinking.. when it's new and you're young, you drink until you puke even if you don't know what you're drinking. You're just stupid that way. As you get older, you drink what you know you'll enjoy and not just because you can.
So yeah, you're an immature drunk. But you'll sober up eventually. Downloading useless crap gets boring.

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Ok, so you can't find one either. Gotcha. It's my entire point, so it's pretty fucking relevant to the discussion despite your inability to address it. They called me and said I was using too much bandwidth. They told me I had to reduce my consumption or get cut off. Reduce it to what? They can't tell me. That dosen't strike you as odd in any way? Am I in Bizarro world where I'm the only one that sees how fucked up that is?Aslanna wrote:Again, not relevant. Just because they don't tell people the magic limit doesn't mean it's "unlimited". Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Well if the dude on the phone said that you were at 400GB, yet you were actuallly at 1.2TB, the logical assumption is that they only really start caring when you exceed 800GB...
Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Who ever said there was one? I even specified there wasn't in my initial post. So I don't know where you come up with the "inability to address it" part. It doesn't matter if they publically specify a limit or not. They are under no obligation to tell you what it is. Obviously since they contacted you there is one and the service is not unlimited as you apparently believe which is backed up by Comcast no longer advertising unlimited service. You may want to consult their Terms of Service and you know.. Actually read it.Fairweather Pure wrote:Ok, so you can't find one either. Gotcha. But feel better in knowing that at least you have Nick to keep you company in your Bizarro world. Tally ho!
Considering the article Winnow posted I'd say aim for under 250GB a month. At least for the next 11 months or so...

Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
I was thinking 200-250ish to stay under the radar. After reading about others that have gotten the warning, 400 seems like a common warning spot. Btw, in everything I've read about this, (covering several hours of Internet reading) the highest DL I saw someone post prior to thier warning was 850G. Fucking ameturs!Animalor wrote:Well if the dude on the phone said that you were at 400GB, yet you were actuallly at 1.2TB, the logical assumption is that they only really start caring when you exceed 800GB...
I assumed that since he said 400G, he was going with a pseudo average of what it takes to get on his list. He also didn't use a phrase like "You used over 400G last month". I think if he had my actual, he would've used it as ammo.
Re: I got my first Comcast DL warning
Wow, Aslanna uses a lot of words to say absolutely nothing at all.

I believe I said quite a lot. It's not my fault you're unable to understand them. Back to your Biazarro world!Nick wrote:Wow, Aslanna uses a lot of words to say absolutely nothing at all.
