List 5 movies you own...

Post by Fairweather Pure »

List 5 movies that you own that you think other people have not seen, but would like.

Brick (2005) - At it's heart, it's simply a murder mystery. This is a modern movie that takes place in a highschool setting. All the cast talk with a jargon that is a mix of 40's gumshoe and teen slang. It's complicated, with a ton of characters, but entertaining to watch it all unfold. This is one of the very few movies I have ever watched twice in a row. I just knew I missed stuff the first time around, and I did.

Grave of the Fireflies (1988) - This is an anime story that takes place during the aftermath of WW2 bombings on Japan. It follows an orphaned boy who is striving to care for his baby sister. I don't think I've ever seen a better anti-war film in my life. Gutwrenching and real. It stuck with me for days after watching it.

Home Movies (animated TV show) - Goddamn I cannot get enough of this show. It started on the WB I think, was dropped, and picked up and put on the Adult Swim lineup. There were 4 seasons total. The show centers around a boy, his 2 friends, and the movies they make on a video recorder. Brendan Small went on to do Metalocoplypse after Home Movies was cancelled. Brendan Attended Berklee College of Music and is insanely talented. He does all the music for his shows and has been the voice in lots of other shows. FYI, Coach McGuirk is my favorite animated character of all time. For all the greatness of this show, most people have neither seen or heard of it.

Amelie (2001) - It's in french with subtitles. Most people won't watch it. Most people are missing out.

City of God (2002) - A movie for movie lovers. Powerful and redeeming. It's subtitled, so once again a lot of people would pass this up.

I own:

Legend
Labrynth
Dark Crystal
Hackers (first dvd my wife ever bought!)

I'm looking for a deal on Mallrats. Predator is on my "must own" list, along with lots of movie from that era (Robocop, Aliens, ect). I look for deals on those as well. Most of them are $9.99, but I want them just a tad cheaper! Most of those have been released with cool 3D cover art.

Tomcats is a highly underrated guy flick. It has some horribly cheesy parts but the rest is funny.

Fairweather, you of all people should like parts of this movie.

Here's a sample. Meet the librarian:

Here's the longer version which gives more background to the scene:

I'm sure someone has seen one or all of these, but I'm also sure someone hasn't seen any of them. :)

1. A Tale of Two Sisters (South Korean film. If you haven’t seen it’s an amazing movie that requires you to watch it several times to fully understand (or at least pick up all the cool foreshadowing). Hollywood is currently doing an American remake which will butcher it….watch the original).

2. Yojimbo (Classic Japanese Samurai film starring Toshiro Mifune)

3. Pi (A really clever low budget Darren Aronofsky movie)

4. 25th Hour (Edward Norton movie about a guy reevaluating his life the 24 hours before he goes away to prison)

5. Darby O'Gill and the Little People (Classic!)

Tomcats was the movie I took my wife to on our third date :P

Darby O'Gill and the Little People SCARED. THE. FUCK. out of me when I was a kid. They used to play it on Wonderful World of Disney. There were ghosts and a wagon of death that carried people off when they died. Jesus Christ, it was terrifying!

I really really liked Event Horizon...until the last 15 minutes, where it proceeded to fall apart into an over the top mess. It's still totally worth watching though, had so much potential.

Yeah, Amelie is great. But you lazy US people and your "no subtitles, its too hard" problem is kinda funny :). Subtitles are GOOD, it mean you both see the movie as its INTENDED instead of horrible dub, AND you dont have the problem of horrible lipsync :).
Just checked, i got movies from 17 different coutries, and i still aviod dubbing like the plague. Movies are made to be seen in the original language :)

I have 3 Danish flicks! I could not imagine how bad they would be dubbed. I can't stand any dubbing at all, unless you count kung fu theater. :) Subtitles aren't difficult, for those that don't think they would like...just need to pay closer attention is all!

I have movies from 12 different countries, none are dubbed. I did catch the dubbed version of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on TV once. They made the criminal/love interest sound like a mexican bandito. It was laughable.

Hackers takes a little imagination to appreciate and an understanding that it's not meant to represent real hackers in the same way the actors in Starship Troopers belonged nowhere near a battlefield.

I'm going to second "Brick" I LOVE that movie.

I can't think of 5 that I own that are obscure really...

1.) The original Night of the Living Dead
2.) Requiem for a Dream
3.) Brick
4.) American Psycho
5.) Babel

Not the most obscure, but some of my favorite movies in my collection so far.

Well, I don't really own movies but 5 movies I've seen that I don't think many people have and I'd highly recommend:

The Warriors
Iron Jawed Angels
Crimen Ferpecto
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Little Voice

I saw City of God, Fairweather and let me tell you that was one of the most depressingly, disturbingly *real* movies I've ever seen.

1. Trust
2. Amateur
3. Mouth to Mouth
4. Blood: The Last Vampire
5. Howl's Moving Castle

The first two a friend recommended to me and I ended up buying them when the video store I worked for sold them off. The third I caught on cable one night, its subtitled, but was really funny has Javier Bardem in it and I really enjoyed the film. The last two are just my fave anime (they are anime right, I don't watch a lot of them to know).

I loved the first one. I made my mom, who is not big on subtitled flicks, watch it, and she really liked it as well. This was a great film in mostly German about finding a new dream and doing everything you can to attain it at ANY age.

I've had bad luck with trying to get Oldboy from Netflix for some reason. I don't know if they have changed the way it was referenced by their library or something, but I have twice had it ready to ship only to get a "we no longer carry this film" email.

And yet I've never anybody talk about it like.. ever.

Plus I didn't have any rare movies and that's my next favorite. I actually just picked up 21 Grams which I believe is from the same director, isn't it? Another great flick.

I actually just picked up 21 Grams which I believe is from the same director, isn't it? Another great flick.
Amores Perros is also from the same director and IMO the best of his films.

Amores Perros is my favorite Alejandro González Iñárritu film. The dog fighting scenes freaked me out the first time I watched it though. I went and looked the movie up to make sure they were fake after watching. If violence towards animals bothers you, there are a few parts that are pretty rough. Great movie though.

Just finished another movie by Tom Twyker and Franka Potente (Run Lola Run) called The Princess and The Warrior. Touching, a bit of action, and fun! It's in German with English subtitles. I don't know if it's also dubbed because that would have sucked to watch.

I just saw À la folie... pas du tout (He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not) tonight in film studies. It had Audrey Tautou and some other French people in it. Really very good movie. I want to see Amelie now!
