Bioshock Poll [Mild Spoilers]

Post by Sylvus »

Well, which is it?

I'm personally going Rescue right now. I'm too nice, I suppose.

If you'd like to speak about any specific parts of the game, please include spoiler tags as well as which part of Rapture (level) you're in.

So far, I'm in Neptune's Bounty, and here's what I've found going the good-guy route
[Show]
I've rescued, I think, 4 little sisters, at least. After the 3rd or 4th, Tenenbaum sent me a message and told me that a little sister would be bringing me a gift. The next time I got to one of those plasmid swapping booths, there was a teddy bear there that had the "Hypnotize Big Daddy" plasmid in it, as well as some Adam and some other stuff, money or something.

I am going the rescue route too to get the achievement. I am playing through it the first time on easy and I decided to go the rescue route now, because I figure on the harder difficulties ADAM is going to be much more important and I'll want to kill the little brats to get the most out of them.

I can't remember exactly where I'm at, I just know this place I'm in right now there are a bunch of trees, and this lady sent me to find something to help these trees that Ryan poisoned. I think I am moving too quick, because there have been a lot of areas I stayed out of thinking I wasn't supposed to go there till later, but I'm wondering if they were just non-essential areas of the levels I was on. I'll have to be sure to take my time and look everywhere the next time through.

So far I have no complaints at all, PLUS I got the special edition - and a bunch of them were shipped with broken Big Daddy figures (they are really cool, like 4 inches tall I guess and really heavy duty) so the guys I know at gamestop told me to take one of them because 2k games is replacing them, and also giving a cool artbook to the people that got the broken ones for their trouble.

Just put it all in spoilers just in case.

I've been rescuing every one and using the start button to check and see how many Big Daddy/Little Sisters there are in each area to be sure I get them all.

I don't know how much adam you get for harvesting a Little Sister but you do get rewarded with Adam it seems like after each three Little Sisters you save (may be wrong on the number).
[Show]
I also received the hypno Big Daddy plasmid as part of my first present for saving the Little Sisters which is a nice plasmid. So far, I seem to be OK on my Adam resources while saving them all.
I don't know if it's the right decision in the long run and I'm sure when I find out, it will be a big spoiler that probably shouldn't be revealed.

I don't know what it is, but I know there is some sort of major plot twist at some point.

I'm not very far in yet, only played a few hours with too many interruptions (in the hospital)...but when do you know if you can start taking on big daddy's? Does Atlas give you a hint thing to say, "Hey, try this on the big daddy..." type thing, followed by a tutorial type thing about harvesting vs. rescuing? Or do you just kill the first one you have a chance to?

You get forced into your first big daddy fight by Atlas, I won't say anything else cause I don't want to ruin it for you.

At a certain point in the game, you must take on a Big Daddy to advance so you'll know! That first encounter doesn't involve a rescue/harvest that I can remember

There is a rare cut scene that leads into the first decision on harvesting or rescuing but not really a tutorial or advice.

I don't think this is much of a spoiler but make sure you have some armor piercing ammo! It's not absolutely needed but you'll blow through a ton of regular ammo taking down a Big Daddy before you have access to more powerful weapons and that ammo is precious.

So, last night I decided to look online and see what the secret achievements were ( I can't stand not knowing), and it turned out to be a big mistake, because knowing them informed me of a major plot twist in the game. I am not going to say what it is, but I just wanted to warn anyone else that was thinking about looking at the achievements that you might not want to.

Re Funk's comment: This game can be spoiled very easily according to reviewers so be careful and play it sooner rather than later before someone does spoil it intentionally or accidentally somewhere on the net that you browse to.

----

No spoiler here but a suggestion to loot everything. When you can start inventing things, you use oddball stuff that you pick up as parts. At first, some of the parts aren't used but once you get past Arcadia/Farmer's Market and get to Fort Frolic, all the parts that weren't being used have a use.

Semi spoiler comments/tips:
[Show]
-I can't remember the name of the tonic that lets you have a second chance at looting bodies but it's a great one to have. Buy it as soon as you can. When you start inventing things and want a certain item, it's nice to be able to reloot a corpse or container to try again (you don't get the original loot but it "rerolls" the loot for the corpse/container)

-The "static discharge" tonic is also a nice one. Some mobs kill themselves just hitting on me in close quarters.

-try to check the entire maps as you'll find weapon upgrade stations off the path necessary for completing the level and the upgrades are nice. I have my machine gun upgraded for damage and reduced kickback.

-The chemical thrower weapon comes in handy after Arcadia/Farmer's market. (upgrading it to reduce consumption helps

-Nice thing about this game is you can probably get by with Electro Shock 2 for almost everything and a weapon or two but it's so nice to have the selection. Anti personnel ammo comes in handy at certain points when mob activity is high
Anyone playing on medium or hard difficulty? I'm enjoying myself on easy and am going at a snails pace exploring everything. How's the ammo/eve supplies for medium or hard settings?

I'm playing medium, and so far (Arcadia) have run into no problems with ammo/eve.

Hopefully not a huge spoiler, but I recommend taking pictures of EVERY mob with the camera. Keep doing it, even after you've gotten a few levels of research on them. I've gotten a couple nice tonics (including Static Discharge II and Scrounger) for all the pictures I've taken.

Ditto on the pictures. I am playing through on easy the first time through, but I plan on playing through it on all three difficulties.

How do you handle taking pictures? I typically approach most areas with Electro Shock 2 active and (for me) and my primary upgraded weapon: machine gun. Do you freeze the game using the weapon select, switch to camera, snap shot then switch back? I took a picture or two of Big Daddy's while they were going about their business. I suppose I answered my own question. I just couldn't see myself walking around with the camera out but switching to it real fast would work. That's the advantage the 360 has over the PC version I think as the PC version game won't freeze while switching.

I quit hacking stuff after the first mandatory hack and then failing a few times on the next ones. The "hack override" invention is another of my favorites. When coming to a safe, I'll pay the fee if it's cheap (like 40 dollars). If it's 100+ I'll use a hack override. I'm not very good at getting the pipes in place. I'm glad they didn't make hacking a requirement or it would have been a negative for me in enjoyment of the game.

I also typically take out security cameras with an electro shotgun shell. Has anyone been hacking security systems? So far, I've found it easier to put them out of commission and then grab the common machine gun ammo loot from the remains.
[Show]
The wrench is pretty powerful if you use both tonics upgrading it's damage. Static discharge/wrench is a good last resort if ever low ammo and eve. I like the fire tonic that reduces fire damage taken and increases fire damage as one of my physical tonics. Seems to be a lot of flamey type situations

I always take pictures as much as possible, when I know mobs are nearby I'll get it out, snap a picture or two quick and then switch to my weapon/plasmids.

I have also been hacking a lot of things ( I have hacked one of each of the things you can hack) and I will continue to at least until I get the master hacker achievement. There are some spots in the game where you get a dead end area with a camera or turret, and if you hack it you can lead enemies back towards it and have them (and your flying security bot thing, I almost always have one) take care of the mess for you.

I usually walk around with pistol/shotgun out, and when an enemy shows up, I just pause/switch to camera, grab as good a pic as I can, and pause/switch back.

As far as hacking goes, I find that game tremendously easy, and already have the achievement for hacking 50 things. I think it's because I used to play a game that was very similar on the C64 when I was like 8 years old. I think I've hacked everything that I have walked past that is hackable, and have yet to pay to hack something.

Pictures are huge. The bonuses for research you can get tonics damage bonuses. There are like 3-4 levels of research for each thing. This includes turrets, cameras, security bots etc. I hack everything because I have the tonic that gives me free health/EVE at the end of every hack.
[Show]
If you research turrets and bots enough you automatically hack them when you press x no need to do the mini-game. I also have the photographers Eye 2 tonic equip until I have researched everything. It gives +15% research for pictures and I got it free for researching something. I think maybe the rosies.

Honestly, I take pictures of things without freezing them or anything. Even on PC, it only takes a split second to swap back and forth, and the tonics alone have been worth it.

Didn't know you could research big daddies and turrets. I'll have to go back and do it.

For photos, it's worth buying a ton of film at only a dollar a shot. I take pictures of corpses if things get hairy and I have to make with the carnage. It's worth it even then.

The PC game freezes just like the xbox version for weapon/plasmid selection by pressing "shift".

I'm playing through on Medium, and have no ammo issues. There are some times where it gets pretty low, but I have yet to have to resort to the wrench, other than for just having fun. I wish they let you carry more ammo to be honest...I always get to a point where the weapons are all full up.

The other poopie part is for the stingy folks who play (like me), my wallet capped at 500 dollars. So I had to buy stuff at that point.

I suppose the whole idea of taking photos seemed kind of odd for the situations you're in. My suspension from reality can only go so far! : )

I've been combing over every level and have found a lot of things. It's nice that the game allows for various play styles.

I need to go back and check out some of the places with ice when I'm not worried about ammo levels.

Dont worry about ammo just use the incinerate plasmid.

My current plasmid lineup is:
[Show]
shock ball, telekinesis, incinerate, winter frost(sp?), hypnotize big daddy, the one that makes camers, turrets attack enemies

OK, I AM TYPING THIS IN CAPS SO YOU KNOW I MEAN BUSINESS, THE FOLLOWING IS A HUGE SPOILER AND IF YOU WANT TO FIGURE THE STORYLINE OUT ON YOUR OWN, DO NOT READ IT.
[Show]
I won't know for sure until I play through the game a second time and harvest the girls instead of rescuing them, but I think rescuing them played a much bigger part then just getting extra adam.

After I killed Ryan, the lady that created them sent one of them out to help me, and the girl led me to a secret path into their little hideout (all those holes they crawl into lead to this hideout) and it ended up being a big shortcut. I'm guessing if you harvest the girls instead, she probably isn't going to be so willing to help you out like that.

I am on my way to kill Atlas/Fontaine now and it appears that I have missed quite a bit of stuff (the first few levels I left a lot of spots un explored because I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be in those areas yet) but the second time through I will be a lot more thorough

Overall so far I give the game a definite 10/10, the storyline is great, gameplay is great, and the replay value is very good. Bioshock is exactly what I needed after the past few months of no good games to play.

I have heard one of the best things you can do to extend the game and make it much more fun as well as last longer is to turn off the quest arrow.
It has a tendency to make people go from quest point to quest point with no exploration and you miss a lot of the "side" stuff.

My favorite dialog of the game so far is:
[Show]
After you kill a big daddy the Little Sister sometimes will run over to him and talk.

I like the quest arrow but Bioshock's map displays everything on the level even before you've explored it so I use that to make sure I hit every room I can and to see if I'm possibly missing a "seekrit". I suppose a way to make the game more challenging would be to not use the map.

Because I go so slow sometimes, or when I run off to get something or do something before resuming the game, I see the note that says to push "D-Pad Right" for a clue if you're stuck. I only did this once so far and that was with the first camera quest for clarification. Nice that it's there though!

Finding the Little Sisters seems almost too easy. I would have liked a little more randomness, because the way it's set up, there's basically one in every single place there can possibly be one until you get them all, and if you really don't feel like looking, just find one and camp her respawn.

I'm just about done the game now, it appears. Very pleased with it.

It's a really good game. Very well thought out in story and in overall direction.

This game is so good, I don't play it unless I'm in the right mood to fully enjoy it. I don't want to waste the quality game play when I'm not totally focused.

Setting does make a difference. I played a little on my 24" LCD and while it was good, playing it on the big screen with the lights down and surround sound turned up completes the experience.

Hearing one of the inhabitants rambling on or humming close by but not being able to see or find them for awhile keeps you on edge.

Yeah, I got to play it on my friends 70" this weekend and it was a totally different experience than playing it on my 27" standard def.

Finished the game, and while part of me feels like it was too short, I honestly think that's because I've played so many poorly-paced games lately. This one knew when enough was enough and it was time to get to the point. Fantastic, 10/10, would splice again.

Had it crash once on my PC while doing a lot of swapping from map/gameplay at one point, and I think something just got confused with all my flipping. Other than that, very polished. Damn glad I upgraded my PC just in time for this.
[Show]
I was VERY thorough, and the only area I know for sure I missed was a little room in the garden area of Arcadia as you enter it that was closed and I could find no way into. I also didn't fully explore the final area when you're a BD because I was too busy watching the LS. Am I the only one who thinks this would have made for a great novel? :)

Had it crash once on my PC while doing a lot of swapping from map/gameplay at one point, and I think something just got confused with all my flipping. Other than that, very polished. Damn glad I upgraded my PC just in time for this.

I agree, I honestly think that if it was done correctly this could actually be a good movie. I know I missed a handful of areas and I am going through the game again on medium now to try and find everything.

Natural Camouflage is hax, but I love it. Nothing quite so satisfying as sniping splicers from across the room with the crossbow when they can't even see you.

Oh well, I can't change my vote away from 'not there yet' but I'm rescuing all.

I played through neptunes, the fisheries, and made it to the place afterwards.... I have to return the game after work, but I just opened a gamefly subscription and they shipped it out today :)

Played from smugglers whatever straight through to hephaestus last night... no problem having enough adam while rescuing all, especially with the gifts tannenbaum keeps giving. the only annoying part so far was the bee hive area... everytime you smoke the bees and enter the room, splicers show up out of nowhere. I needed 7 samples and wound up needing to smoke the bees 6 or 7 times to get them all and the constant splicer action got really annoying. am i almost done?
[Show]
did you guys attack the guy in frolic? took care of his masterpiece and he said to go, but i really wanted to see what his 'muse' was, so i tried blasting him and it took another 10 minutes or so to kill all the splicers and get rid of him for good... the muse was pretty anticlimactic but he's done... the foreshadowing on atlas being a bandit has me suspicious.
as i was closing the spoiler tag, i typed /quit instead :)

I had that same issue with the bees and it kind of did annoy me too. And I killed that guy to get his muse, too. However, I never did find his personal quarters, and there is an achievement for entering them.

If leave him alive you can meet him, and kill him, later at mercury appartments. Then go back for the muse if you want.

ending was pretty underwhelming... the game was fun but overrated i think. i rescued them all so i got the good ending, but watched the evil ending online - good one was too cheesy, and evil one just sucked. 8/10

Videogames are often criticised for negatively influencing the behaviour of their players, and the latest report from KCTV, telling the story of a Kansas teenager who strangled his little sister after she interrupted him while he was playing 2K Games' Xbox 360 masterpiece, Bioshock, isn’t going to help the cause.

“I get really into my games and when Brit’ came over to me to watch TV I forgot I was in a game and accidentally strangled her,” Sean Conner told KCTV yesterday.

The boy's parents admitted that they felt that the futuristic first-person shooter (which includes gameplay where mutated little girls are killed to gain powerups) had influenced his behaviour, but that they were not to blame because he was old enough to purchase it himself.

Violent videogame-hating attorney Jack Thompson has since released an ominous statement in which he says that “Justice will be served to the bastards that caused this crime.”

Played through and finished it, but by no means thought it was as amazing as everyone makes it out to be. In any case, I don't think it's an appropriate game for young kids (lots of cussing, lots of violence and gore, killing of little girls, etc). What's the rating? I'm surprised it's not MA which would mean the kid wasn't old enough to have purchased it himself.

And the parents not to blame because the kid may have been old enough to buy it himself? Fucktards. If your child is still living with you or is under 18, you're still fucking responsible. That's the core of so many problems we have in this country these days.

I agree.

However I would like to simplify the issue and say that we should just drown this kid before he does any more damage, and beat jack thompson to death with his corpse.

I really like the game, i just killed Andrew Ryan last night, so looking forward to arrange an second demise for Fontaine :)

Pictures, pictures, pictures. Get them as soon as you can, many good tonics, and the damage bonus is excellent. I killed 3 Rosies last night without being hit after having the max Rosie dmg upgrade, a tonic that boosted dmg upgrade damages, and power to the people upgrades on shotgun and grenade launcher.
Ill go so far as to say that if youre close to a rez point, dont care for health, better to die getting the shots, then beat the splicers up after.
I think i got all but turrets, cameras and security bots max researched by now.

The hacking are getting kinda trivial, especially since i got some sound bug that in around 1/4 of my hacks lags the game wildly playing the initial sounds, making it impossible to do anything for a minute or so, and then suddently it start again, so gotta be ready for it. It add a little difficulty to the otherwise very easy hacking though :)

I play on medium, and apart from the start, the only time i had ammo issues were after you had to hand your gear in to get inside somewhere, and didnt get all the ammo back, and a few times with grenades, but i got 500$ at almost all times, and buy weapons and so on as much as i can to top up, since im constantly full of cash.

And love the game, i plan to play it again on medium after they make a widescreen patch, and then try to rescue all the little sisters.

According to Maxconsole:
2K Games has got in touch to let us know that a journalist called up the KCTV news desk who relayed that there was NO such story in circulation and internet sources have just made it up.
