That was seriously hysterical. Xyun now has a special place in my heart for all his flaming abilities.
My question is, why exactly the Machine had to lock a post like that? Aren't threads like that the entire purpose of VV existing? Why exactly would you lock it at that point? I could see that thread banking on two more good rants before it finally extinguished.
And is the identity of the Machine still a closely guarded secret? Or has he been unmasked before and I just missed it.
There were plenty of posters in there that I haven't seen in a long time, that makes me sad.

Re: Please move the following thread to the archive!
I don't understand the hostility toward American light beer. Sure, there are tastier beers out there that I also enjoy, but what the Brits, Canadians, Scandanavians and whatnot don't understand is that in America it gets hot and sunny sometimes, and there's little that is more refreshing than an ice-cold, mass-produced, inexpensive beer that uses rice in the brewing process than your thick, room-temperature, 900 year-old recipes.
Stop being snobs, there's room for both in the world! I love authentic Italian and Mexican food more, but Olive Garden and Taco bell also have their merits. I love a good microbrew or an import, but Bud Light is also delicious and refreshing and easy to find at virtually any Liquor Store or Bar in this country (and many others). I'll go out on a limb and say that it's probably easier to find Anheuser-Busch products worldwide than any other brand. Am I wrong?

Re: Please move the following thread to the archive!
Not a fan of most of the American beers. I think that Shiner Bock is one of the few American beers I can stand, although I do not claim to have tried all of the micro-brews available. I still prefer to frequent places with more choices of good imported beers like BB Rovers and the Walburg Restaurant. (even though their websites suck)
Re: Please move the following thread to the archive!
When you're shopping for beers, there's a better chance of getting musky old beer when going for the rare stuff than grabbing a case of bud light that was brewed a couple weeks ago with quality American tap water.
Re: Please move the following thread to the archive!
I agree with sylvus. I enjoy a lot of fine beers and microbrews, but nothing beats a cold bud light on a hot day. It is great for getting drunk as well as staying hydrated! (yes, I am aware of what I just said) The thought of drinking a delicous guiness while doing anything outdoors is nauseating enough not to even attempt it, I don't care what those commercials say.

Maybe that is the case where you shop, but not where I do
Re: Please move the following thread to the archive!
Insert any beer you want into that equation. No beer is more satisfying on a hot summer day than good old fashioned shitty American beer. Possible exception is Yuengling. As cheap as bud light, but way more superior. Alas, Ohio doesn't carry it, so my statement stands.Aslanna wrote:There's a lot of middle ground between Bud Light and Guiness

Complete and utter shit.
When I drink beer, I don't want to put shit like propylene glycol alginate, corn syrup, chemically modified hop extracts, myloglucosidase, papain enzyme, liquid sugar and potassium metabisulfite into my body.
They put that shit into lite beer because without them, it would taste even worse.
On a cold day, I'll take any european (especially German) beer over mass-produced north american swill.
German beers are required by law to contain nothing more than malt, hops, yeast and water.
On a hot day, gimme an ice cold German pilsner or lager!

Re: Please move the following thread to the archive!
I also agree that the light beers are fine once in a while, I don't like really strong bitter beer and I can't drink beer warm so that rules a lot of them out for me. My favorite is Premium Grain Belt, which is brewed here in MN, but that's me.
The Italian food thing is something I'm not a fair judge of, because I've had authentic Sicilian cooking my whole life, and can personally cook better spaghetti than places like Olive Garden/Macaroni Grill/whatever. There are some good authentic places around here, which are good but they are uncommon. That is really the case with most things though, it just boils down to preference, but I can't personally eat that crap, so I understand where Miir is coming from - just not why he is getting upset about it!
Edit: On topic with the thread - I thought that thread was great too, however it seems to me like furor used his weakest material when he posted here. Still good for a laugh though.

Also note I'm not commenting on how 'authentic' or not their fare happens to be. I just find some of it tasty. And their house wine isn't too terrible either for the price. Obviously if you know of a small authentic place that would be a better choice.

I'm pretty sure the "select grains" include the rice that they use, but I don't see anything about any of the things you mention, which the FDA usually requires on the label.Water, barley, malt, select grains, yeast and hops.
/edit: please note that I'm at work right now, and that's all I could find through a couple google searches. I'll look more closely when I can get to a bottle of it. Did you have one in your fridge??

Apparently they aren't required to list all the ingredients. Enjoy your chemicals!

Although according to one of the comments someone wrote the company and asked what was in Bud LIght and got the following back:
Sounds like Miller is the evil company.Bud Light is brewed using water, yeast, hops, barley malt, and rice – nothing else. Unlike some Miller beers, Anheuser-Busch products do not contain any artificial ingredients, additives, or preservatives.

Re: Please move the following thread to the archive!

Beer is like water. You usually end up preferring what you grew up with. When you travel or move and the flavor changes, you do not find the new taste to be right. Personally, I would rather drink piss than the super dark crap that the germans put out. Beer is not meant to be chewed.Anheuser-Busch claims that Budweiser contains only natural ingredients: water, barley malt, rice, hops, yeast, and tannin, an anticloudiness agent that is mostly removed from the final product. They say there's no chicken hearts or anything else. On the other hand, Miller, Anheuser's chief competitor, uses quite a bit of chemical goo.
We can prove this by performing the following easy 'n' fun test for the presence of foam stabilizers. Get two clean beer glasses, and into each put one drop of milk diluted 70-to-1 with water. Then pour Bud into one glass and Miller into the other. Unless the manufacturers have changed their formulas in the last couple weeks, the head on the Bud will die like a dog within two minutes (which it should--even a tiny trace of milk is deadly to beer foam), whereas the one on the Miller won't, indicating the presence of false drugs.
The preceding exercise in handy home chemistry is supplied by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer group based in Washington, D.C., that recently made a not-very-successful effort to get manufacturers to voluntarily reveal their ingredients. I don't mean to single out the Miller company, but you may be interested to know that Miller Lite contains propylene glycol alginate, water, barley malt, corn syrup, chemically modified hop extracts, yeast, amyloglucosidase, carbon dioxide, papain enzyme, liquid sugar, potassium metabisulfite, and Emka-malt, whatever that is. I would venture to say that light beers as a class tend to have more additives than others, simply because they'd be totally flat and tasteless otherwise.

Re: Please move the following thread to the archive!
There is no US law requiring corporations to list all the ingredients on alcoholic beverages.
If they list any at all, it's probably a selective list which doesn't include the chemicals and preservatives.
If you search a bit, you can find all the shit that they put into their beer.
I personally like to know the ingredients that are in my food and drink... and I go out of my way to eat/drink organic food and try to steer clear of shit that is loaded with preservatives. It has a lot to do with how my body reacts to it. I believe I've mentioned it in previous VV discussions about food (specifcally processed cheese).
If I have 2-3 random Canadian or American mass-produced type beers, I start to feel bloated, full and sometimes nauseous. If I drink a large quantity of said beer, I'm most likely gonna feel like shit the next day. By comparison, if I drink 2-3 european beers, or Canadian/American micro/craft brewery beers, I feel great! Even consumed in excessive amounts, I never feel bloated or full. Rare are the hangovers from pure beer.
As for chain restaurants like Olive Garden... I've been there a few times and the food isn't terrible. But if I want real Italian food, I will make it myself or go to a proper Italian restaurant where they make their sauces from fresh ingredients and use fresh pasta. I make all my sauces with tomatoes from my garden and with fresh herbs. My parmessan is ground fresh and my pasta is almost always homemade.
If you've ever had a proper home-cooked Italian meal, I'm sure your opinion of Olive Garden would be a lot different.

Anyway, I don't get the "...super dark crap that the germans put out. Beer is not meant to be chewed" line. Not every german beer is like that. People always say Guiness is thick but when I tried it I didn't really think so. It's not my preference but it seemed drinkable to me. Also, Guiness is from Ireland not Germany but I'll assume you weren't referring to Guiness.
Germany has a wide variety of beers which can be seen at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_beer
I'm sure there is a variety out there for everyone from pale to dark. Stop stereotyping their beverages!

That's not to say that there aren't any german stouts. Hell, there are even american breweries that make stouts.
I'm not sure why but when anyone mentions european beer the first (and last) beer that comes to mind is Guinness. I personally don't really like guiness.

Yes, my grandparents came here from Lipri, Sicily. My grandma always cooked a lot of traditional stuff and still does, plus the two traditional Italian restaurants I know of in the area are owned by friends of my grandpa's - and he sells them all the herbs they use. So whether I go out or eat in, I have always had it good
Plus I made a point to learn how to cook everything years ago

Big name American beers (in general) don't have much flavor or character, if mediocrity is your thing they're just fine. Beer on a hot summer day? Gogo dehydration, it takes more water to process the beer than you get from it.
Most of the big chain restaurants are decent enough, they just aren't authentic.

My grandma always cooked a lot of traditional stuff and still does, plus the two traditional Italian restaurants I know of in the area are owned by friends of my grandpa's - and he sells them all the herbs they use. I'm Hungarian but my dad is married to an Italian Newfie, my mom is married to a German and my wife is Greek... I have a lot of different european influences in my cooking.

I don't drink beer often but when I do I prefer a few mexican brands like Tecate and Corona, with salt and lime! Not a big fan of european beers simply because it seems a lot of them go out of their way to make it extra bitter. Heineken is tolerable.
As far as that thread goes, it's pretty good but that's not even my best stuff. Rewind a year or two and I had a lot more angst. I remember dropping quite a few bombs in the "Ixtlan is the SCUM of Veeshan" thread that I've searched for numerous times. It has got to exist on some archive somewhere, I hope. I'd give my left pinky toe to read that one again.

If you've never tried Pacifico or Negra Modelo (might be spelled wrong) then you're missing out huge, especially if you're a mexican beer fan. Pacifico is the lighter of the two I'd say, its similar to corona but has way more flavor.I don't drink beer often but when I do I prefer a few mexican brands like Tecate and Corona, with salt and lime!
